Abstract

The covid-19 outbreak has led to many opportunities and chances for teachers and lecturers to create many media for online learning. The purpose of this research discusses 1) to design Digital storytelling in online learning, 2) to study the implementation of teaching English by using digital storytelling, and 3) to find out the practicality of digital storytelling for pre-service teacher students. This research uses d research development model developed by Alessi and Trollip (2001), which consists of three stages; the first stage is planning, the second stage designs, and third is development which focuses on designing digital storytelling to find more about the impact of digital storytelling as an online learning media process for English teaching material. The sample was 180 junior high students to get the needed analysis data, eight pre-service teacher students implemented the digital storytelling in the online classroom, and two evaluators to assess the appropriateness of digital storytelling to be used by pre-service teachers as it is found in this research that designing digital storytelling showed practically on how digital storytelling was designed, developed and applied in English class. The pre-service students successfully implemented digital storytelling, and the appropriateness was high, which can be used in the online teaching process

Abstract

A robust online learning platform is critical for extending education beyond the classroom and facilitating interactive and individualized learning. Language learning has developed some patterns due to social interactions and independent learning experiences. Vocabulary motivation and achievement are critical components of students' English proficiency. Nonetheless, both variables are recognized as critical by lecturers and students, but receive less attention. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of Busuu, an online learning platform, on the motivation and achievement of university students in Indonesia when it comes to vocabulary learning. The platform's use as an independent variable, whereas motivation for vocabulary learning and vocabulary achievement, were dependent variables. This study employed a quantitative methodology. Busuu facilitates the learning experience by keeping track of the number of words learned, the level of fluency, and the duration of the learning day. The researchers refer to fluency as the indicator in the study. The questionnaire and test were adapted and modified from previous research on motivation and achievement in vocabulary learning. There were 98 participants. The research discovered that the Busuu online learning platform's performance significantly contributes to the motivation and achievement of vocabulary learners. The study proposes a new model of English learning that incorporates online learning platforms in order to boost students' motivation and vocabulary achievement.

Abstract

This research aimed to discover the students' perception of Powtoon animation video in Introduction to literature class. Technology had a significant impact on education. During covid-19, mostly online learning system was applied. Introduction to literature was one of the online class subjects done last semester at odd semester academic year 2020/2021 by using an online system. Sixteen meetings had been done for one semester, and the last project was creating powtoon to tell fiction stories. Thirty-five students involved in this research, and the project of powtoon was created by students as one project accomplishment in this class. The researchers set the qualitative research design by using interview. The interview result revealed that the students were enjoying creating powtoon in this class. They were motivated to use technology in the online class system and found more online media soon.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out the effectiveness and practicality of the product of digital storytelling in the online English classroom. The researchers, previously, noticed that the varieties of media needed to be developed in maintaining Malay folklore. This research offers insights into the effectiveness and practicality of digital storytelling in preserving Malay folklore. This research is using a mixed-method quantitative and qualitative design. This research population was Islamic junior high school students in the first grade from three schools in Pekanbaru and eight pre-service English teachers involved in implementing the digital storytelling videos. The evaluation results showed that the design of digital storytelling videos showed the effectivity of digital storytelling products was high and practically on how digital storytelling videos were developed and applied in English class was also high. The implementation of digital storytelling videos was successfully done by the pre-service students and the appropriateness was high which can be used in the online English classroom.

Abstract

This article focused on the the gender patterns that were found in the social media Instagram based on the sociolinguistics point of view. There were two research questions were arisen what types of the gender patterns that were found in the social media Instagram based on the sociolinguistics and the factors of the difference language used based on gender in social media Instagram. Uses and Gratifications Theory (UGT) was used to analyze the data. The data was taken from all of component of the sociolinguistics aspect in social media network especially for gender patterns that existed on the social media instagram college students’ users id in Pekanbaru. The writer took 30 Instagram users id as sample. The study found that two types of gender patterns, first; gender in writing and second; gender in profile photo, thus there were five main assumptions that caused the differences language in gender in social media Instagram, namely; (1) an audience is active and goal-oriented in their media consumption, (2) media are used for gratifications, (3) media are in competition with other means of need satisfaction, (4) people understand their personal media use, interests, and motives enough to communicate with researchers about their choices, (5) the audience members are the only people who can make judgments regarding the value of the media content. The study recommends that sociolinguistics is an interesting topic to be researched thus future field of study concerns with the rapid changing phenomena in social media.

Abstract

This study discusses the effect of the material benefits and value of an item on student creativity in utilizing used goods. This study aims to determine how much the influence of material benefits and values ​​on students' creativity in utilizing used goods at SMAN 1 Salo, Kampar Regency. This research was conducted at Salo 1 State Senior High School, Kampar Regency, with 57 students as the subject. This research was conducted from 19 July - 9 September 2013, with data collection techniques through tests, questionnaires (questionnaires) and documentation, while the object of this research is the material benefits and value of an item, and students' creativity in utilizing used goods. Based on the results of data analysis, it can be concluded that the material benefits and value of an item have a significant influence on students' creativity in utilizing used goods. This can be seen from the r count Product Moment which is greater than r table both from the significant level of 5% and 1% (0.250 <0.450> 0.325). Associated with the entrepreneurial mindset in an effort to encourage entrepreneurs who come from the younger generation, our educational curriculum must instill in students the potential for entrepreneurship.

Abstract

Speaking is a significant and fundamental skill that may help students enhance their ability to communicate with their classmates verbally. Henceforth, instructors or teachers need to incorporate some educating media which can develop the students’ English speaking competence. Therefore, this study aims to discover the viability of news and media literacy for speaking practice at an advanced education level. The researchers used experimental research and took two groups as the sample of this study. There were experimental groups in class 4b and a control group in 4a class that comprised 35 students for each class. Moreover, the speaking test, mainly pre-test and post-test in both experimental class and control class, was also used as gathering information of the research. This research found that the difference between pre-test and post-test average speaking practice results was -24.540 to -17,689, with a 95 percent confidence range of -24.540 to -17,689 for this finding. Finally, this study discovered an average difference in students' speaking practice between the pre-test and post-test. Therefore, enhancing students use of news and media literacy is necessary for speaking practice and teachers need to encourage students’ use of technology to find out online sources as media literacy in learning the second language. They have various kinds of information from media sources and improve the advanced vocabulary that they used while practising speaking with their classmates. To summarize, integrating news and media literacy has a substantial impact on enhancing students' speaking skills among four-semester students of English Language Education in Pekanbaru.

Abstract

The aim of the research was to find out teaching and learning activities at SMA Negeri 12 in implementing 2013 curriculum. This research was based on the preliminary studies in some Junior and Senior High Schools around Pekanbaru by observing and interviewing the English teacher in excuting 2013 curriculum. The design of this Research was qualitative.The researcher used observation sheet and interview to find out the activities in SMA Negeri 12. Based on the research findings, first, the stage of teaching and learning process in the classroom, the teacher could not implement the step ideally, second, the professional curriculum from the government did not provide the available training to support teaching and learning in the classroom and the last the availability of resources and media were not supported yet. By conducting this research, the researcher hoped that the government conducting the appropriate training to all English teachers in implementing 2013 curriculum.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to know the teaching and learning activity in implementing the 2013 curriculum. This research is based on a preliminary study of the implementation of the 2013 curriculum in some junior high schools around Pekanbaru by observing and interviewing English teachers. This research is qualitative. Researcher use observation sheet and interview to know the learning activities in SMP Negeri 23 Pekanbaru. Based on the research findings, first, the stage of teaching and learning process in the classroom, the teacher has not been able to carry out the ideal teaching step; second, professionally, the curriculum implementer has not received training from the government to support the teaching and learning process in the classroom and the last available resources and media Not yet supported. By doing this research, researchers hope that the government does the right training for all English teachers in applying the 2013 curriculum.

Abstract

Microteaching is a practical event which is very beneficial for candidate teachers to have real environment of teaching. The candidate teachers get big chances to implement their experience in teaching. The students’ perfectives are crucial for promoting teacher education programs’ outcomes. This study aimed at investigating the students’ views of thirty students from the English Language Education Program of FKIP-UIR. A combination of quantitative and qualitative techniques used in gathering the data. Mainly, a questionnaire and a focus group interview were used as the main tools for data collection. The findings revealed that the entire sample of student has stated that they were having their own perspectives towards Microteaching and their opinion during microteaching sessions provides a scope to enhance their teaching skills for real teaching sessions. Based on the findings, these candidate teachers were glad to have real teaching session during microteaching class
