Abstract

Student’s Tenses mastery is an important competence to support the major English skills, listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Beside, the tenses mastery is also important to have another grammar materials that need Tenses mastery as the basic knowledge. However, in reality, students’ tenses mastery is very minimal that they are not able to call out the names of the tenses, mention the formulas, let alone to understand meaning and the usage in sentences. To solve this problem the resercher has created a teaching technique, namely, Tenses Symbols Technique (TST) that covers four steps of tenses mastery: memorizing tenses names, formulating tenses patterns, understanding tenses meanings, dan applying in context. Clasroom Action Research is the research method applied in this research because the aim of this research merely to solve the problem the researcher has in her own class. From the two cycles of Classroom Action Research that consists of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting, and from data analyzing , it was proven that Tenses Symbols Tecnique (TST) could improve the students’ tenses mastery as 81% in cycle 1 and 95% in cycle 2 because the application of symbols in this technique could simplify of the process of decoding the meaning of each tenses. So, the result of this research is TST could improve students’ tenses mastery.

Abstract

Microteaching is a practical event which is very beneficial for candidate teachers to have real environment of teaching. The candidate teachers get big chances to implement their experience in teaching. The students’ perfectives are crucial for promoting teacher education programs’ outcomes. This study aimed at investigating the students’ views of thirty students from the English Language Education Program of FKIP-UIR. A combination of quantitative and qualitative techniques used in gathering the data. Mainly, a questionnaire and a focus group interview were used as the main tools for data collection. The findings revealed that the entire sample of student has stated that they were having their own perspectives towards Microteaching and their opinion during microteaching sessions provides a scope to enhance their teaching skills for real teaching sessions. Based on the findings, these candidate teachers were glad to have real teaching session during microteaching class

Abstract

Dialectology is a part of sociolinguistics that is known as regional dialect topic. To ease the readers to understand the regional dialect especially in language mapping for certain region, the researcher used isoglosses boundary. Isoglosses boundary is the line that separate between region of having different etyma. The aim of this research is to elaborate the language mapping in dialectolgy by isoglosses boundary. Method of the research used qualitative method explained descriptively. In this research, the researcher conducted a dialectology research in Rokan Hulu Regency by 21 observation spots. In collecting data, there were 200 Swadesh words had been recorded, had been transcribed in phonetic transcription, and had been drawn in language mapping. The result showed that language mapping in Malay-Riau language was easy to analyze the differencess of language used by using isoglosses boundary. The languge mapping founds a language with some dialects used, Malay-Riau language with Bengkalis Minang dialect, with Mandailing dialect since the position of Rokan Hulu Regency lies among 3 regions having different in languages. They are West Sumatra Province with Minangese language, North Sumatra Province with Bataknese/Mandailing language, and Bengkalis Regency with Malay Riau Island language. The most dominant was Malay-Riau language, Malay-Riau language with Mandailing dialect. It means that, there is only one language used in Rokan Hulu Regency. It is called Malay-Riau language with Mandailing Dialect.

Abstract

The purpose of the research is to find out the students’ ability in writing, especially writing recount text by using Facebook as a medium of discussion. In the classroom students set up their Cellphone to write and discuss a recount text. The research question is “Is there any significant effect on students writing recount text by using face book as medium for discussion on Senior High School students?” In the preliminary study it was found that the students’ writing ability was low. Hence, the writer is interested in trying to solve the students’ problem by using Facebook as a medium of discussion. The design of this research was an experimental research. The sample for this research consisted of 25 students. The result of this research found that Facebook as medium for discussion significantly affect the students writing ability. Abstract

This paper is a part of research project carried out to enhance the English learners’ listening comprehension through listening strategies instruction. The research worked on classroom action research design, conducted in two cycles by involving a group from fresh year English learners in English study program of Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Universitas Islam Riau on 2017/2018 academic year. The findings revealed gradual improvement of the students’ performances in doing the listening tests. At the first cycle, the students could reach 25 out of 40 questions, in which this number is four points less than the students’ achievement in cycle 2. Then, in range 10-25 questions of correct answers in cycle 1 could be reached by 24 students, while in cycle 2, there were 32 students got correct answers at that range. Furthermore, there were 6 students could reach less than 10 questions correctly, beside that there were only 3 students in cycle 2. In conclusion, there have been improvement of the students’ achievements in listening tasks provided in all meetings during cycle 1 and 2. Although they found challenges in completing the tests, the teachers’ assistances in guiding them to apply some strategies contributed towards the improvement of their performances in listening. Abstract

The aims of this study is to explore the practicum implementation in order to see barrier occurs and to suggest off possible solution to issues occur into the below specific objectives: (a) to explore form of PPL implementation from several points of view: school partners, supervisor-lecturer, and teacher-student, (b) to overview the actual work of the students in the school, viewing from workload and timing, (c) to describe supervision from school partner teacher, types of supervision and partnership pattern in the classroom. The approaches employed samples from four schools, a university and related research participants all of whom are probed for detail individual and group interview. There is also a look for document review applied for better comprehension of the practice. The selected schools are; two SMPs and two SMAs, all of which lie in Pekanbaru. Then, the university reviewed at was Universitas Islam Riau. The research sees that the currect practice is running well, however, there are few wrong doing happening on the ground that school management and PPL unit need to review about, such as workload of the students, supervision, and illegal request from schools that related to financial or non-financial. The timing of the practicum variation need some unified approached and the university need to delegate supervisor-lecturer for initial talk with schools regarding the timing, at about 2 months period. On the other hand, the preparation of the students is in need of revision in term of their self awarenes for experience-based learning. And post practicum reflection process is strongly suggested for better practice and indivdual strengthening learning process.

Abstract

Recently, teaching English for young learners especially for elementary school level still becomes problem in practice especially in Pekanbaru. Practically, the teachers teach their students without standard guidance to go with such as curriculum and syllabus because for fourth grades students, English Language subject looks like as extra subject which affects the effort to teach maximal. As response to this issue, the researcher has developed a learning media which focuses on vocabulary mastery which provides chance for the students to learn with or without teacher. There are five stages in developing this media which called by Barcorious such as analyzing students’ need, designing media, developing content and design, implementation media, and evaluation. This study describes the implementation of Barcorious application to enhance students’ vocabulary mastery. Indeed, this media was implemented for teaching four grade students. There was one class which consisted of 35 students participated. The finding shows this media can give significant improvement of students’ vocabulary mastery because the students’ post-test higher than pre-test.

Abstract

Based on the writer’s preliminary study, it was found that the speaking ability of the students were still low. Some of students were not able to pronounce well, were not able to express their ideas, and were afraid of making mistakes when they were speaking. All of those problems were caused by several factors, one of them was the way of teaching was not appropriate for the students. In this research, the writer applied Impromptu Speech technique which has been proven can improve students’ speaking ability, it is one teaching technique that is very useful for teaching speaking. This technique enables students to develop their capability to think on their feet, organize ideas quickly, and speak informatively and confidently about variety of topics. The subject of this research was the fourth semester students of Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Bahasa Asing (STIBA) PersadaBunda, and the object was the effect of applying Impromptu Speech technique. The writer used simple sampling to take the sample. The writer used Non Equivalent control group design that used one group as the experimental class and one group as control class. The writer used Independent Sample t-test to analyze the data. Based on the data analysis, Consideration Sig (2tailed) t0= 0.000 is lower than Sig (2 tailed) ttable= 0.005, it means Ha was accepted and H0 is rejected. So, it can be concluded that there is a significant effect of applying Impromptu Speech technique to improve students’ speaking ability at the fourth semester students of STIBA Persada Bunda Pekanbaru.

Abstract

The rapid development of science and technology in the current era of globalization brings many changes in various aspects of social life. These changes include education. Recognizing this, Indonesia has published English as one of the crucial subject. However, students got some difficulties in writing. To assist students in solving writing problem, this study was conducted to know the effect of blended learning model towards students’ writing ability of the eleventh grade students at SMAN 6 Pekanbaru. Sample of the study was determined through random sampling method. There were 10 classes randomly selected. It consisted of two classes that were XI IPA 1 as experimental class and XI IPA 2 as control class. Afterwards, the experimental group was taught by applying blended learning model through Telegram Messenger and the control group was instructed through the traditional method by lecturing method. To gain data, writing test was administered. After collecting data, the mean scores of the pre-test and the post-test for the two groups were calculated using the t-test. Findings of the study revealed that there were statistically significant differences between the means of two groups in favor of the experimental group which achieved better results in the post-test. It was proved by the significant level of 0.05 which was t=3.983 and p=0.000. On the other hand, there is a significant effect of blended learning model towards students’ writing ability.

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate students’ perception of using Whatsapp in blended learning on reading comprehension. This was a descriptive research. The participants of this study consisted of 40 students of the second semester at STMIK-AMIK Riau, Pekanbaru, Indonesia. The data collected through questionnaire and interview. The finding of this research showed that majority of the participants had positive perception towards the using Whatsapp in blended learning on reading comprehension. All of the means of students responses in the questionnaire in each items were at 3.5-4.5 which indicated students’ responses were positive or at high level. The result from questionnaire also revealed that students agreed that using whatsapp in blended learning on reading comprehension was useful, helpful and effective in learning English anytime and anywhere. The findings from interview results also revealed that there were positive aspects and drawbacks of using Whatsapp in blended learning on reading comprehension. Nevertheless, the positive aspects of using Whatsapp in blended learning on reading comprehension gave more benefits to the students’ learning activities and their performances. These benefits could be continued to students’ learning outcome especially on their reading comprehension ability.
