Abstract

This research has main objectives to identify the Cockney and Received Pronunciation accents in My Fair Lady movie spoken by Eliza Doolittle and Professor Henry Higgins. Also, the objective is to find the correlation between the accents and the social backgrounds of both speakers. The result of this research shows that the accents indeed can indicate Eliza and Higgins? social backgrounds. There are several characteristics that can distinct the Cockney and Received Pronunciation, such as H-dropping, Th- fronting, Diphthong shifting, and G- dropping. Eliza and Henry Higgins speak different accents because they come from different regions in London. Besides, from their accents, it is shown that Eliza  with her strong Cockney accent comes from lower class while Henry Higgins with his Received Pronunciation accent comes  from upper class. Furthermore, the correlation between accents and social backgrounds is also analyzed in this research. Key Words: Accent, Cockney, Received Pronunciation

Abstract

The topic of this study is about Romanticism of James Horner's songs that entitled If We Hold On Together, Somewhere Out There, I Want To Spend My Lifetime Loving You. The purpose of this study is to find out how James Horner expressed romanticism in his literary works. The theories used to analyze the data are expressive theory made by M.H Abrams and poetry theory from Persy Bysshe Shelly. The research design used is quantitative research. Data collection and analysis techniques by conducting intense readings and conducting content analysis. The research findings show that the romanticism in James Horner's song utilizes parallelism, hyperbole, personification, symbol, imagery, and antitheses. The romanticism expressed by James Horner in his song entitled If We Hold On Together, Somewhere Out There and I Want To Spend My Lifetime Loving You is to tell about the beauty of nature, emotions, feelings and intuitions that are poured out of the author through a message songs lyrics inspired by stories of movie imagination.

Abstract

The thesis writer focuses on the analysis of Massie?s discrimination on Claire as seen In Liz Tigelaar?s The Clique Movie Script. The topic discrimination is chosen because it is important to find out of the proofs, the causal factors, and the effects of Massie?s discrimination on Claire. The thesis writer applies the concept of discrimination, the types of discrimination, the causes of discrimination, the effect of discrimination, and she also applies a qualitative research. The finding shows that the proofs of Massie?s discrimination on Claire are a part of the social psychology harmful actions toward other, unjustifiable negative behavior towards a group or its members, leads the group that feels discriminated often live under ambivalent way of life. The second finding is the causal factor of Massie?s discrimination on Claire is feeling superiority against the rest. The last finding is the effects of Massie?s Discrimination on Claire. First, the effect on Claire is hidden her discrimination to her mom. The second effect on her friend is Layne angry to her. The last effect on Massie is she feels uncomfortable in her own house.Key Word: Discrimination

Abstract

Syairiyah, Marthalita N, and Fanani, Abu Prue?s Imagination for Impassable Wilderness on Colin Meloy?s Novel of Wildwood.Keyword: Imagination, dream, and Impassable Wildernes This article studies the  imagination which appears in child?s mind on the novel of Wildwood written by Colin Meloy. Sometimes the children like to imagine with what they see, hear, and read. In this novel, Prue is one of the children who experiences adventure by her imagination.This study is conducted to enrich the topic about imagination. Imagination in the object is analyzed using dream theory by Sigmund Freud. This research is using qualitative method. The novel of Wildwood by Colin Meloy is the primary data source. While, the supporting data are taken from secondary data source.The researchers find a result of this study; Prue?s imagination before she entered the Impassable Wilderness. Her imagination sometimes seems real even though not all of their imagination become real. But, this novel makes one of the children becomes real when she faces the problem of that myth.

Abstract

The thesis writer focuses on the analysis swear words used by John Bennett in Ted 2 movie script. The objectives of the study are, to find out the types of swear word used by john Bennett in Ted 2I movie script, and  the reasons of John Bennett using swear words in Ted 2 movie script. The thesis writer applies the theory Liedlich (1973) to find the types of Swearing and applies the theory of Neel Burton (2012) to find The Reasons of Swearing and the thesis writer also applies a qualitative research.Key Word: Swear Words, Ted 2 Movie script

Abstract

The purpose goal of this study was to test the impact of typographical features of subtitles including size, colour and position on L2 English viewers? retention and recall of texts in game visual novel, and also the voice effect of the visual game. Quasi experimental research played in this study with 54 students of two departments, with the same characteristics. It was played the game visual novel into both classes, and administered 45 multiple choice test and questioners in the end of the classes. Both classes went through the same procedures, but one class watched the customized subtitled of the visual game novel. The data gathered were subjected to the statistical procedure of paired sample t-test. And, the result showed that the experimental class showed the better result on their understanding of the story, but there is contrarily on their listening comprehension result, that is their vocabulary comprehension, it is found that the both subtitles did not have an effect on participants? comprehension. This study has implications for English language teachers and material developers to benefit customized bimodal subtitles as a mnemonic tool for better comprehension, retention and recall of aural content in game visual novel via Computer Assisted Language Teaching approach. Abstract

Psychopathy is one of the dangerous mental disorder. The thesis writer focuses her thesis on the analysis of psychopathy in literary work, movie script written by David Leslie Johnson entitled Orphan in 2009.The thesis writer focuses her analysis on the proofs of Esther?s psychopathy in David Leslie Johnson?s Orphan movie script, the causes of Esther?s psychopathy in David Leslie Johnson Orphan movie script , and the effects of Esther?s psychopathy in David Leslie Johnson?s Orphan movie script on herself, Max, and Kate. The objectives of the study is; to find out the  proofs of Esther?s psychopathy in David Leslie Johnson?s Orphan movie script, to find out the causes of Esther?s psychopathy in David Leslie Johnson?s Orphan movie script, and to find out the effects of Esther?s psychopathy in David Leslie Johnson?s Orphan movie script. The thesis writer also applies qualitative research as well. The result of this study is there are four proofs of Esther?s psychopathy in David Leslie Johnson?s Orphan movie script, they are; Pathiological lying, Lack of remorse and guilt, lack of empathy, and manipulative. The thesis writer also analysis the causes of Esther?s psychopathy in David Leslie Johnson?s Orphan move script. There are three causes of Esther?s psychopathy, they are; physical abuse, sexual abuse, and emotional or psychological abuse. In addition, the effects of Esther?s psychopathy. Abstract

This article aimed to find out the vocabulary mastery on food and drink by the 4th Grade students of Bunga Elementary School, Sidoarjo. This thesis uses quantitative research because it is focused on number and analyzing data. The thesis writer uses written test to gather the data from the 4th grade students of Bunga Elementary School, Sidoarjo. After conducting, the thesis writer takes the student?s test paper to analyze how far the students have mastered vocabulary of food and drink. The test consists of 36 Items, divided into three parts. Part 1 is pictures matching, part 2 is blanks filling, and part 3 is essay. Each part has 12 numbers of questions with pictures of food and drink. The thesis writer finds that there are 9 students participate on the test. There are 1 student who gets B+(11.11%), 2 students who get B (22.22%), 1 students who get C (11.11%), 4 students who get D (44.44%), and 1student who gets E (11.11%). It can be concluded that there are 4 students who pass the test and 5 students who fail in mastering vocabulary. He hopes that this thesis could be a guide for teachers and students to improve theirvocabulary.Keywords: vocabulary, mastery, ability

Abstract

The thesis writer focuses on the analysis of Jin Seon?s defense mechanism as seen in Carnby Kim and Youngchan Hwang?s Bastard. The topic defense mechanism is chosen because it is important to find out of the proofs, the causal factors, and the effects of defense mechanism of the main character. There are three objectives intend to be achieved in this thesis, they are; to find out the proofs of Jin Seon?s defense mechanism, the causal factors of Jin Seon?s defense mechanism, and the effects of Jin Seon?s defense mechanism on himself, on Kyun Yoon, and on his father. The thesis writer applies the theory of defense mechanism, the concept of defense mechanism as seen in psychological point of view by Sigmund Freud, and conducts a descriptive qualitative research. The finding shows that there are fifteen proofs of Jin Seon?s defense mechanism and it is divided into four proofs for denial, three proofs for repression, two proofs for projection, one proof for reaction formation, three proofs for rationalization, and two proofs for sublimation. Besides, the thesis writer also concludes that there are ten causal factors of Jin Seon?s defense mechanism that are: two denial causal factors, one repression causal factor, two projection causal factor, one reaction formation causal factor, two rationalization causal factor, two sublimation causal factor. While both of them, the thesis writer also conclude that there are effects of Jin Seon?s defense mechanism on himself, on Kyun Yoon, and on his dad.Keywords:Defense,     Mechanism,    Webtoon.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to find the types of errors made by the grade nine junior high school in using Simple Past Tense in writing narrative. The classification of errors in this study is divided into four categories; they are omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. The subject of this study consists of 17 students of nine grade of SMPN 2 Sidoarjo who have more than 100 words writing. The method used in this study was descriptive analysis method to describe students? errors and analyze the data by using formula: = × %, P=Percentage, F=Frequency of errors made, N=Total of students? errors. The data was taken from the test; it was written test. The findings showed that there are 63 errors made by the students in the first test. The most frequent errors made by the students in their narrative writing focused on the use of simple past tense is misformation which consists of 33 errors or 52%,  omission with 15 of total errors or 24 %,  addition with 12 of total errors or 19 % and  misordering 3 of total errors or 5%. The second test showed that there are 9 errors made by the students in the second test.  The most frequent error made in second test by the nine grade students of SMPN 2 Sidoarjo is omission with 5 of total errors or 45 %. The second is Misformation with 4 of total errors or 36 %. The next is Addition with 2 of total errors or 19 %. The last is Misordering 0 of total errors or 0 %.
