Abstract

The thesis writer focuses on the analysis of Libby?s Depression as seen in Jennifer Niven?s Holding Up The Universe. The objectives of the study are, to find out the types of Libby's Depression, the causal factors of Libby's Depression and the effects of Libby's Depression as see in Jennifer Niven's Holding Up The Universe on herself, the society, and Jack Masselin. Abstract

This article attempts to analyze archetype in Grimm?s Cinderella and Rapunzel that uses comparative studies to find differences and similarities of archetype in Grimm?s Cinderella and Rapunzel. This article uses archetype concepts that two stories have collective unconsciousness that love can solve problem. This article uses comparative studies to find archetype in Grimm?s Cinderella and Rapunzel. The study aims at comparing two different literary works. The results of this article can be formulated as follows: 1) Archetype concepts can be seen in Grimm?s Cinderella and Rapunzel because they have same characters types and themes. The two main characters of two stories face complication from harsh condition but after meeting a prince, their life change better. The themes of two stories are love. 2) Archetype in Grimm?s Cinderella and Rapunzel have similarities and differences. The similarities of the two stories are the two main characters faces complication because of bad women, themes of the two stories are love. Archetype in Grimm?s Cinderella and Rapunzel get resolution by marrying a prince. The differences of two stories are the way of the two main characters to meet a prince. In Cinderella comes to the prince party with fairy?s help and leaves her shoes that lead to prince meets and marries her. In Grimm?s Rapunzel, she meets a prince in a tower by using her long hair.    Keywords: Archetype, Collective unconsciousness, Comparative Studies.

Abstract

Study entitled "Code Mixing Used by English Literature Students of the Seventh Semester in Dr. Soetomo University" is a sosoiolinguistic study. The selection of objects is based on the environment of Indonesian and English bilingual languages in a circle of seventh semester English literature students at Universitas Dr. Soetomo. This thesis uses descriptive qualitative method. This study aims to determine the type of Code Mixing and the reasons of using code mixing by employing Hoffman's theory. Finally, it was revealed in the findings that the most dominant type of code mixing were Used by English Literature Students of the Seventh Semester In Dr. Soetomo University is Intra-Sentential Code-mixing in the form of phrases. Meanwhile, the dominant intra-lexical code mixing found is verb. As a whole, code mixing is found in the form of inserting English codes into Indonesian utterances. Involving changes to pronunciation only shows four data. This research also reveals the most dominant reasons for using code mixing among seventh semester students is to express group identity. Keywords: Sociolinguistic, Bilingual and Code-Mixing.

Abstract

Advertisement is a media communication which contains sign the most. In order to achieve the selling goals, companies will provide advertisement to introduce their product. In this matter, the thesis writer focuses on analyzing figurative language in advertisement. They are two objectives intended to be solved in this thesis, they are to describe types of figurative language and describe the meaning of figurative language in Maybelline cosmetics advertisement found in Pinterest. This study was conducted to analyze the uses of figurative language in Maybelline cosmetics of the catalogue online Pinterest. This study focuses on observing the words which contain figurative language by using Perrine?s theory. The method of this study uses descriptive qualitative because the researcher described the sentence that is categorized into figurative language. Whereas, data source were taken from advertisement catalogue online Pinterest which were publish on 2016 to 2018. The result of the data shows that there are eleven sentences which contain eight categorized figurative language and seventeen word that found in advertisement. The study found that there are eight kinds of figurative language which appeared in Maybelline advertisement such as: Personification, paradox, metaphor, apostrophe, symbol, allegory, hyperbole, and repetition. Keyword: Language, Figurative Language, Maybelline Advertisement

Abstract

This research studied reification in Harriet Beecher Stowe?s Uncle Tom?s Cabin. The researchers used reification theory as proposed by Georg Lukacs and within Marxist tradition. By using Lukacs points of reification of the three points, the researchers find that Uncle Tom experiences the three points of reification, those are depersonalization, alienation of labor, and thing-like relation.

Abstract

The science of language is known linguistics. Syntax is a branch of linguistics that studies the set of words, phrases, clauses in a sentence. The researcher focuses her research on sentence pattern in Make Over lipstick advertisement found in instagram. The objective of this research are to analyze the syntactical structure of sentence pattern applied in tree diagram and transformation grammar. The tree diagram used to describe words, phrases, or clauses arranged in a sentence. While the transformation grammar function to find out the changes in the shape of a sentence. In analyzing the data in tree diagram the researcher  uses Dianne Borstein theory and for analyzing the data in transformation grammar uses Akmajian and Frank theory. The researcher uses descriptive qualitative methods to describe and explain the finding data. The data found were thirteen data taken through the selection of sentences based on their types, namely declarative sentence, question sentences, and exclamation sentences. The data is then analyzed. From the analysis carried out, the reseracher found declarative sentences and exclamation sentences on the basic structure of sentences while the command sentences and question sentences are in the transformation grammar structure.      Key Words : Syntactical Analysis, sentence pattern, Instagram advertisement.

Abstract

The research focuses on Sunday Bloody Sunday as an Expressive Criticism. The researchers apply a qualitative research using the lyrics of the song Sunday Bloody Sunday as source of data. The finding shows that the lyrics of the song Sunday Bloody Sunday is an expressive poem that conveys the message of the spirit of the Irish nationalism and patriotism that is roosted on the speaker?s world view and weltanschauung. The world of view of the speaker of the poem is that he sides with the people of Ireland who want to make the island become united in the name of the republic Ireland that  comprises the whole island and wants to spread the idea through this song. This song is also an expression of the anger of the speaker of the poem that sees the presence of the British authority cannot be tolerated because they kill the unarmed civilians on and on and every Irish people can be target for the killings..

Abstract

This study aims to analyze Dewi Ayu?s Electra Complex as Seen in Eka Kurniawan?s Beauty Is A Wound. The objectives of the study are: (1) to find out the proofs of Dewi Ayu?s Electra Complex as Seen in Eka Kurniawan?s Beauty Is A Wound; (2) to find out the causal factors of Dewi Ayu?s Electra Complex as Seen in Eka Kurniawan?s Beauty Is A Wound; and (3) to find out the effects of Dewi Ayu?s Electra Complex on herself and on Ma Gedik as Seen in Eka Kurniawan?s Beauty Is A Wound.  The theory used by the thesis writer is the theory of Electra Complex by Freudian theories in psychoanalysis approach and she also applies a qualitative research. Keywords: Psychoanalysis, Electra complex, Defence Mechanism.

Abstract

This research deals with Depression in Freddie Mercury?s song lyrics. It is focused on the symptoms  of depression implied in the song lyrics entitled ?Bohemian Rhapsody?, ?Love of My Life?, and ?Somebody to Love?. The objectives of the study are to find out the poetic devices in Freddie Mercury?s song lyrics entitled ?Bohemian Rhapsody?, ?Love of My Life?, and ?Somebody to Love? and to describe the depression symptoms portrayed in Freddie Mercury?s song lyrics entitled ?Bohemian Rhapsody?, ?Love of My Life?, and ?Somebody to Love?. The theories used to analyse the data are Aaron T. Beck?s depression and William Wordsworth?s theory of poetry. Pragmatic approach and qualitative research design were applied in conducting the study. The techniques of  data collection and analysis covered close reading and content analysis. Findings show that ?Bohemian Rhapsody? makes use of hyperbole, metonymy, situational irony, antithesis, repetition, and allusion as poetic devices. The depression symptoms undergone by the speaker of the song lyrics entitled ?Bohemian Rhapsody? cover Low Self-Evaluation., Loss of Emotional Attachments, and Negative Feelings toward Self. The second song lyrics entitled ?Someone to Love? employ repetition, hyperbole, and personification. The speaker of the song lyrics suffers from Reduction in Gratification. The song lyrics entitled ?Love of My Life? make use of hyperbole, repetition, personification, and symbol as the poetic devices. The character ?I?, in the song lyrics, suffer from Dejected Mood.
