Abstract

The tenet of good translation is to achieve idiomatic equivalence. However, when the translation work is going to be published, there should be some adjustments, either lexical or structural. The reasons for adjustment might be various: for politeness, conciseness, etc.  This article discusses the translation adjustments of a Chinese philosophical book: The Sayings of Zhuang Zi by comparing the original translation by the translator with the published book which has been edited by publisher’s editor.  The objectives of this study are to find different types of translation adjustment made by the editor and to analyze the possible reasons for the adjustment.

Abstract

Request strategy in Japanese serves to present desires to hearer and speaker gets benefit from the request. Request strategy consists of bald on record, on record with positive politeness, on record with negative politeness, and off record. Research used qualitative descriptive approach. Data were gathered from Maya Koikeda’s Tokimeki Makkun comic book. Research, in the corpus of data, found bald on record strategy was a strategy without any strings attached. Then, on record with positive politeness was showed by the closeness and solidarity relationship. While on record with negative politeness was showed by minimizing load demand and apology, and off record with a vague ellipsis sentence.

Abstract

Article presents manga and its development related to sport in Japan. This effort brings financial advantages because the society likes and makes it into national identity. Presentation begins with manga history, manga sport, dan Eyeshield 21. It is concluded that Eyeshield 21 has a positive impact for Japanese society because that comic teaches the importance of teamwork, overcoming obstacles, and achieving life goals; Japan has succeeded to develop manga into their own cultural contact that implies in their national identity, that is Manga Eyeshield 21.

Abstract

The current study aims to validate the measure of marital satisfaction among young urban married couples. Marital satisfaction is defined as a individual’s subjective experience toward marriage or components within a marriage. The scale consists of 38 items measuring individual’s satisfaction in communication, division in roles, agreement, openness, intimacy, intimacy in social relationship, sexuality, finance, and spirituality. The results indicate that the instrument was found to be reliable (α= 0.920) and have low correlation with subjective rating of overall marital satisfaction (rs = 0.293, p < 0.05).

Abstract

This research focused on the construction of new masculinity in South Korea parenting and fatherhood at the variety showen titled “Superman is Back”. This variety show itself was a part of the existence of Korean popular culture that was also called Hallyu. Hallyu became the phenomenon that swept other popular culture which previously developed in some countries. Hallyu could shift the previous pop culture with the good strategy. The selection of this television show was intended to see how a television program constructed the kind of new masculinity of men, in this case, celebrity fathers that join the show. The qualitative method was employed in this research to find the gender issue and new masculinity discourse which was portrayed by the fathers. The result shows that “Superman is Back” tries to display the different masculinity that is constructed by the show and this is different from the traditional one. This is the alliance of men with new masculinity that is less oppressed women as embedded in the context of patriarchal culture. The portrayals of new masculinity can be seen in the way fathers do nurture, cook, change the baby’s diaper, dance practice, and play with their children. “Superman is Back” is an attempt to show father as nurturer and has the role in domestic tasks too.

Abstract

Old, haunted, dark and poorly maintained are the impressions of Indonesian museums. Unlike foreign museums which are always crowded with visitors, Indonesian museums are always quiet and deserted. The biggest challenge for museums today is recognise that museums are for people and that their future depends on developing themselves to meet the needs of the people. Thus, Indonesian museums need to develop and apply mass communication model combined with the interpersonal communication model where in this type of communication visitors are allowed to participate in the exhibition and become part of the exhibition since this is what nowadays visitors desired to do. With a better planned exhibition interior design, following the basic design principles such as transforming space with harmony, creating room atmosfer, pacing and circulation, suitable lighting design and display as well as using appropriate presetantion technique combined with technology and multimedia, an exhibition will become a more interactive and attractive that will meet visitor’s expectation

Abstract

Crisis is part of life that cannot be avoided but must be overcome. A crisis tends to cause problems and will have an impact on emotional attitude that should be taken. Most people face a crisis with a negative attitude because they consider the presence of crisis as obstacle in life. Negative emotional attitude will bring people to action breakout, even worse, actions that will make life more miserable. In accordance with the will of God, we are expected to overcome the crisis, though it is a barrier in life, with a positive emotional attitude supported by the spiritual attitude so that the crisis has positive impact. Spiritual attitude shows that someone who understands God's word and will for sure be able to resolve the problem, find a way out or strength to face the crisis. So, the crisis is not the bottleneck of life but a turning point towards improvement that gives goodness.

Abstract

This paper discusses how to develop empathic listening skill to understand others. The purposes of writing this paper are:  exploring of the concept of empathic listening and its urgency in the communication process, describing the barriers that are often experienced by a person to listen in the communication process, and describing how to develop empathic listening skills. In this paper the author uses descriptive-analytical method. The procedures are: 1) data collection, 2) classification of data, 3) data analysis, and 4) drawing conclusions. Source of the data was gained from information available in the literatures. The data analysis was done by using content analysis method (content analysis), which is an attempt to explore the symbolic meaning of the message or the contents of a book or other writings products. The results showed that one of the skills currently needed by humans and often escaped the attention is empathic listening skill. It can be said that the failure in communication may be caused by lack of adequate skills in this regard. Therefore, by developing the skill of empathic listening communication failure can be ravealed, misunderstandings can be avoided and disputes can be eliminated.

Abstract

Visual illustration does not only cover the aesthetical function, but it also becomes the main part to present visual opinion. Illustration has an ability to deliver something that not only can be seen on the surface; furthermore, it has deeper meaning than written language without to be explicit. This paper begins with a brief explanation about illustration and its visual language. Then it describes the various approaches in conveying the message and its application in illustrations. The research method used in this paper is literature study, followed by a reflective analysis of the data. At the end, article reveals a clearer picture of how ideas conveyed through visual language and its relation to deliver an opinion in a visual form.

Abstract

Japanese Business Correspondence is a course that is given by 7 Japanese language study institutions all around Jabodetabek (Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi). Each institution has their own uniqueness which can be seen in course unit composition. The research method used in this research is survey. The result of this research is that most institutions teach the general correspondence rather than business correspondence. It is also found that there are 2 institutions having uniqueness compared with the other five institutions. The two institutions are STBA LIA and BINUS University. The speciality of STBA LIA is the subject related to verbal correspondence. Meanwhile, BINUS University is more specialized in email-format correspondence.
