Abstract

The Fafirru Ilallah is a Javanese texts contains the elements of eschatology and prophecy. The text indicates an acculturation between Javanese-Islamic eschatological work that explains Islamic eschatology. The acculturation makes the eschatological explanation in Fafirru Ila Allah nuanced in Islam and nuances of local culture to deal with actual societal challenge. This article aims to describe the content and the message of the text as well as to carry out intertextual analysis of the text with others. The article answers three main problems, namely the content of Fafirru Ila Allah, the message of it and intertextual link between the text with other prophetic literature. This paper uses an inter-textual and an intrinsic approach simultaneously. This paper reveals that Fafirru Ila Allahwork elaborates great apocalypse (qiyama kubra) and great apocalypse (qiyama sughra) in the lights of Islamic sources as well as local Javanese prophecy as contained in Serat Jayabaya, the Prophecy of Seh Subakir and the prophecy of Ranggawarsita. The work hints the vision of social control by providing the depiction of social crisis and how moslems such deal with it. The article, however, does not further discuss on pragmatical aspects of the texts or how it is received by Javanese readers.

Abstract

Implementing religious moderation in Islamic educational institutions, such as pesantren, has received important attention and massive efforts to strengthen moderate religious understanding in a multicultural society. This paper aims to analyze the implementation of religious moderation in pesantren in East Kalimantan. This paper is a qualitative research on pesantrens in East Kalimantan supplemented by relevant secondary sources. This paper reveals that the strategic steps taken by several pesantren in East Kalimantan, Indonesia, in implementing religious moderation are in the form of designing and implementing policies from pesantren leaders that support the creation of moderate attitudes and perspectives in the pesantren environment. These policies include instilling an understanding of religious moderation during the debriefing and introduction of new santri, doctrinalization at the graduation ceremony of santri, recruitment of strict and selective teaching staff, management of the pesantren unit curriculum that integrates religious moderation, determination of reference books for learning following the theology of ahlusunah waljamaah, strengthening value education and rules through a special curriculum, and others. This paper proves that the implementation of religious moderation in pesantren in East Kalimantan is not only through formal pesantren curricula but also through special pesantren curricula. Implementing religious moderation in pesantren in East Kalimantan requires policies of pesantren leaders that support the creation of moderate religious attitudes and perspectives in the environment. Thus, implementing religious moderation in pesantren in East Kalimantan cannot be separated from the curriculum and pesantren system.

Abstract

This article presents the research findings from a qualitative phenomenological approach on the syncretism of Islam and local culture in the makkuliwa lopi ritual in Sabang Subik Polewali Mandar. The syncretism of religion and local culture in the makkuliwa lopi ritual is manifested in two processes. First, the syncretization of motives, goals, or intentions. For example, the fishermen's habit of serving traditional food was originally related to ceremonies for the worship of supernatural beings. This habit is maintained without undergoing physical changes, but a shift in orientation towards worship of Allah SWT. In this case, there is a syncretization of the motives/goals/intentions of the makkuliwa lopi ritual. Second, the syncretization of the makkuliwa lopi ritual process. This process involves aligning traditional ritual elements with Islamic norms or sharia. Islam influences the adaptation of prayers or mantras, the actors involved in the rituals, as well as a series of makkuliwa lopi rituals which are syncretized according to Islamic principles. The makkuliwa lopi ritual in Sabang Subik Polewali Mandar has a positive impact in the socio-religious dimension which, among other things, can be observed from the community's moderate religious attitude, close social cohesion, and the potential it offers for the economic development of the people. Thus, the ritual acts as a catalyst for positive growth in various aspects of local community life.

Abstract

While wars generally have negative implications and bring chaos, Topat War in Lingsar Village, West Lombok Regency, is an exception. Despite being called a war, this annual tradition is carried out joyfully and without the intention of hurting each other. Instead of using weapons or battling against each other, the Balinese-Hindus and the Sasak-Muslims throw food, called ketupat, at each other. This uniqueness creates curiosity about how two-different religions celebrate the same tradition with mutual understanding. Therefore, this research will look at the prerequisites for successful interfaith engagement reflected in Perang Topat. This research was conducted qualitatively with meta-analysis approach to find a variety of scientific documents as primary data. The results showed that the series of religious rituals were carried out together while faithfully upholding their respective beliefs. It refers to the internum and externum aspects that live in this society, which are the essence of religious moderation. Furthermore, the win-win solution for both religions, the "mutual" process, the accommodation process of understanding and agreement in the annual rituals are designed to maintain the memory of the importance of living in harmony with people of different religions and traditions. The decision-making and ways of preserving the sustainability show a commitment to nationality, tolerance, non-violence, accommodation to local culture, and respect for minorities without exclusivity which are indicators of moderation. Thus, moderate religious attitudes are needed as a negotiation strategy to create an effective and harmonious atmosphere between religious communities.

Abstract

This study discusses the movements of the Instagram community @toleransi.id in promoting religious moderation through nonviolent campaigns during online radicalism and religious extremism. Instagram is used as a tool to achieve religious harmony. However, the community faces challenges such as digital repression and restrictions on the freedom of religious expression. The research method involves qualitative descriptive content analysis. Furthermore, digital ethnography is used to holistically understand the cultural and social experiences of @toleransi.id community activities in the digital world of Instagram. Data were collected through observation and documentation of digital content published by @toleransi.id from 2019 to 2023. Data analysis involved symbol classification, determination of analysis criteria, and analysis using the theoretical and conceptual frameworks of nonviolent campaigns, networked social movements, and religious moderation. The results show that this community faces semantic and behavioral barriers due to the open autonomy space of the internet. They use tactics such as creative and inclusive digital content, dialogue spaces, intellectual discourse, and Instagram as a campaign platform to influence public opinion and build networks. The findings contribute to the study of social movements and religious moderation by showing how @toleransi.id initiated a religious moderation movement with a nonviolent campaign initiated by the Internet autonomy space
