Abstract

A phylogenetic relationship of Indonesian banana cultivars was conducted using trnL-F intergenic spacer of chloroplast DNA sequences. The ingroup was 39 banana accessions from various genomic groups in Indonesia consisting of 9 AA/AAA; 11 AAA; 2 BB; 13 AAB; and 4 ABB cultivars and 12 sequences of different taxa of Musa downloaded from GenBank consisting of 4 AA wild; 1 AA; 3 AAB; and 4 ABB cultivars. Two accessions from section Rhodoclamys and Australimusa were used as the outgroup. The 39 accessions of the ingroup and the 2 accessions of the outgroup were analyzed using primers of the trnL-F intergenic spacer. The results showed that sequence of the trnL-F region can clearly distinguish 40 banana accessions having the A-type chloroplast (AA wild; AA; AA/AAA; AAA; AAB; and ABB) from those 11 accessions having the B-type chloroplast (BB, AAB, and ABB). The A-type chloroplast accessions are most probably derived from female Musa acuminata, while the B-type chloroplast accessions may be derived from female M. balbisiana. However, the specific M. acuminata ancestor of each cultivar remains unidentified.

Abstract

Amin Retnoningsih. 2011. Phylogenetic relationship of cultivated bananas in Indonesia based on morphological characters. Floribunda 4(2): 48–53. — Indonesia has high biodiversity of cultivated bananas. This research objective is reveal the phylogenetic relationship of cultivated bananas in Indonesia based on morphological characters. This research analyzed 2 groups which are consist of ingroup namely 9 banana accessions on genome groups AA, 9 AAA accession, 8 AAB accession, 8 ABB accession, and 2 BB accession, and the other group is outgroup which representated by 2 wild bananas. The method of this research usingCladistic program Phylogenetic Analysis Using Parsimony (PAUP) version 4.0, it used to produce phylogenetic trees. The study branches are tested by bootstrap 100 times. The results show that morphological characters have parallel homoplasm which can be seen from the low CI score by 0.275. Taxon tested are species and under species level (Musa spp). In general, there is no difference on changes of morphological characters in each clade. The clade consist of Boi accession (ABB), Klutuk Wulung (BB) and Klutuk (BB) separated from ingroup clade because they have differences of morphological characters from the others. They are showed by high bootstrap score: 98%. The Klutuk Wulung and Klutuk are predicted to have close phylogenetic relationship with the wild Musa balbisiana (BB).

Abstract

Torch ginger (Etlingera spp., Zingiberaceae) has long been known in Bogor as herbs and spices, however it has not been widely used as ornamental plants and cut flowers. An exploration was conducted to characterize the morphological variations and characteristics of vegetative before flowering. Two species of torch ginger (E. elatior and E. hemisphaerica) in Bogor and their flowers variation can be identified vegetatively by the characteristic of sheath (patterns of stripes, dots decoration, wax layer), and leaf bud (color). The inflorescence characters of E. elatior and E. hemisphaerica can be predicted based on the colour of sheath and scales of rhizomes.

Floribunda 5(5): 165–174. — This study has been done by observing the morphological characters of 83 herbarium specimen collection numbers. Ten species and one variety are found in Sumatra, namely seven species from previous study (A. arachnoidea, A. gracilis, A. korthalsii, A. imperialis, A. ochracea, A. polythyrsa, and A. thyrsiflora) three species and one variety are newly recorded (A. elegans, A. filipes, A. rubiginosa, and Ampelocissus ochracea var. trilobata).
