Abstract

In this paper, a Neural Network (NN) controlled Buck-Boost Converter (BBC) based Switched Mode Power Supply (SMPS) for a PC application is proposed. The proposed BBC is analyzed, modeled and designed for the rated load. Generally, the utilization of Multiple Output SMPS (MOSMPS) for PC application introduces Power Quality (PQ) issues in the power system network. Unlike conventional SMPS the proposed NN controlled BBC can accomplish improvement of power quality. The NN controller reduces the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of source current below 5%, maintains input side Power Factor (PF) to be nearly unity and improves the output voltage regulation. In the proposed system, NN controller replaces the conventional PI controller and overcomes the drawbacks of the conventional system. The proposed BBC is validated adopting MATLAB/SIMULINK software. The simulation analysis validate that the proposed NN controlled BBC performs better than conventional converter in terms of PQ indices under fluctuating conditions.

Abstract

This paper intends to analyze subjective measurements of intelligibility of speech on Albanian language during the conversation between two people using applications which today are very used for communication such as Skype and Viber. The measurement is done as follows: on the entry part of the transmission system sentences or words are spoken or just syllables while on receiving part is recorded what is heard; the percentage of words, sentences or syllables correctly received, on proportion to those imposed on the entry of the system, providing the percentage of intelligibility (the words, sentences or syllables). Methods of measurements are made at different speed of the Internet, in an environment without noise and with noise, in order to see the impact on understanding of the speech with different target parameters.

Abstract

The term microgrid refers to small-scale power grid that can operate autonomously or in concurrence with the area’s main electrical grid. The intermittent characteristic of DGs which defies the power quality and voltage manifests the requirement for new planning and operation approaches for microgrids. Consequently, conventional optimization methods in new power systems have been critically biased all through the previous decade. One of the main technological and inexpensive tools in this regard is the optimal generation scheduling of microgrid. As a primary optimization tool in the planning and operation fields, optimal operation has an undeniable part in the power system. This paper reviews and evaluates the optimal operation approaches mostly related to microgrids. In this work, the foremost optimal generation scheduling approaches are compared in terms of their objective functions, techniques and constraints. To conclude, a few fundamental challenges occurring from the latest optimal generation scheduling techniques in microgrids are addressed.

Abstract

Vocal disorders directly arise from the physical shape of the vocal cords. Videostroboscopic imaging provides doctors with valuable information about the physical shape of the vocal cords and about the way these cords move. Segmentation of the glottal space is necessary in order to characterize morphological disorders of vocal folds. One of the main problems with the methods presented is their low level of accuracy. To solve this problem, an automatic method based on Mathematical Morphology edge detection and the Hough transformation is presented in this article to extract the glottal space from the videostroboscopic images presented. Our method compared with the histogram and active contours methods and the findings showed that our proposed method yields better results.DOI:http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijece.v2i2.212

Abstract

The development and miniaturization of CMOS (microphones and cameras) in the last years have allowed the creation of WMSN (Wireless Multimedia Sensor Network). Therefore, transferring multimedia content through the network has become an important field of research. It transmits the recorded multimedia data wirelessly from a node to another  to reach the Sink (base station). Thus, routing protocols make a big contribution in this process, because they participate in optimizing the node's resource usage. Since Leach protocol was designed only to minimize energy consumption of the network .The goal of this paper is to compare our protocol in tnansfering images with other Leach protocol descendants .By using the application layer, we applied the jpeg compression using the frequency domain on images before sending them to the network. In this paper ,readers will find statistics concerning the lifetime of the network , the energy consumption and most importantly statistics about received images .Also, we used Castalia framework to simulate real conditions of transmission .simulation results proved the efficiency of our protocol by prolonging the lifetime of the network and transmitting more images with better quality compared to other protocols.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the characteristic of a compact generator – hydro turbine system. The generator is of permanent magnet type and the turbine operates in a very low head. The integration of the two components is conducted in such a way that simplifies the construction of the conventional turbine generator. The method is by mounting the generator stator to the turbine casing and the permanent magnets are assembled in the perimeter of the turbine blade rotor. This simple construction is approached by making the stator from individual teeth and yoke. The permanent magnet generator (PMG) is designed to produce the nominal power of 300 Watt 50 Hz at 83 rpm of turbine shaft. All components of the integrated turbine- generator are totally immersed in the water stream. The stator has to be hermitic to avoid water entering the spool. Another issue investigated is the influence of the type of the stator inner casing material to the generator performance. The results show, the PVC material for inner casing has a good influence to the generator performance compared with the mild steel material.

Abstract

Digital audio is one of the most important types of data at present. It is used in several applications, such as human knowledge and many security and banking applications. A digital voice signal is usually of a large size where the acoustic signal consists of a set of values distributed in one column (one channel) (mono signal) or distributed in two columns (two channels) (stereo signal), these values usually are the results of sampling and quantization of the original analogue voice signal. In this paper we will introduce a method which can be used to create a signature or key, which can be used later to identify or recognize the wave file. The proposed method will be implemented and tested to show the accuracy and flexibility of this method.

Abstract

This paper focuses on analyzing and evaluating impact of a Static Var Compensator (SVC) on the measured impedance at distance protection relay location on power transmission lines. The measured impedance at the relay location when a fault occurs on the line is determined by using voltage and current signals from voltage and current transformers at the relay and the type of fault occurred on the line. The MHO characteristic is applied to analyze impact of SVC on the distance protection relay. Based on the theory, the authors in this paper develop a simulation program on Matlab/Simulink software to analyze impact of SVC on the distance protection relay. In the power system model, it is supposed that the SVC is located at mid-point of the transmission line to study impact of SVC on the distance relay. The simulation results show that SVC will impact on the measured impedance at the relay when the fault occurs after the location of the SVC on the power transmission line.

Abstract

The power generation through renewable energy resources is increasing vastly, Solar energy and Wind Energy are the most abundantly available renewable energy resources. The growth of small scale distributed grid networks increasing rapidly in the modern power systems and Distributed Generation (DG) plays a predominant role. Microgrid is one among the emerging techniques in power systems. Power Management is mainly required to have control over the real and reactive power of individual DG and for smooth operation, maintaining stability and reliability. This paper presents a survey of the research works already reported focusing on power management of hybrid energy systems such as mainly solar and wind systems in microgrid. Six different approaches have been studied in detail for AC,DC and hybrid AC/DC microgrid.
