Abstract

In this article a parasitic strip loaded monopole antennas are designed to notch dual and triple bands. The designed models are constructed on one side of the substrate material and on the other end defected ground structures are implemented. The basic antenna comprises a tuning stub and a ground plane with tapered shape slot as DGS. Another model is constructed with circular monopole radiating element on front side and similar kind of ground structure used in the basic rectangular tuning stub antenna. To create notched bands with tuning stubs, two symmetrical parasitic slits are placed inside the slot of the ground plane. The basic model is of the rectangular stub notching triple band and the circular tuning stub antenna notching dual band. Dual band notched circular tuning stub antenna is prototyped on FR4 substrate and measured results from vector network analyzer are compared with simulation results of HFSS for validation.

Abstract

Visual surveillance has two major steps of detecting and recognizing moving objects. In the detection stage, moving objects must be detected as quickly and accurately as possible and the influence of environmental light changes and waving trees should be reduced. In this research a block-based method is introduced in HSV color space in the detection stage. This method did not scan all the pixels of the frame and acted well in situations like sudden light changes. A powerful pattern recognition system should have powerful feature extraction and classification. Note that, feature extraction in gray level or RGB color space has problems such as environmental light changes, adding noise or changes in contrast and sharpness of images, which lead to weak classification. So the HSV color space was used. Here, Block-based Improved Center Symmetric Local Binary Pattern is introduced for feature extraction. In each component of the HSV color space, information of highlight areas in the image such as edge, shape and some texture was extracted. The histogram was calculated in two-level blocks and Support Vector Machine was used for classifying into vehicles, motorcycles and pedestrians. Abstract

Content-based image retrieval is a process framework that applies computer vision techniques for searching and managing large image collections more efficiently. With the growth of large digital image collections triggered by rapid advances in electronic storage capacity and computing power, there is a growing need for devices and computer systems to support efficient browsing, searching, and retrieval for image collections. Hence, the aim of this project is to develop a content-based image retrieval system that can be implemented in an image gallery desktop application to allow efficient browsing through three different search modes: retrieval by image query, retrieval by facial recognition, and retrieval by text or tags. In this project, the MPEG-7-like Powered Localized Color and Edge Directivity Descriptor is used to extract the feature vectors of the image database and the facial recognition system is built around the Eigenfaces concept. A graphical user interface with the basic functionality of an image gallery application is also developed to implement the three search modes. Results show that the application is able to retrieve and display images in a collection as thumbnail previews with high retrieval accuracy and medium relevance and the computational requirements for subsequent searches were significantly reduced through the incorporation of text-based image retrieval as one of the search modes. All in all, this study introduces a simple and convenient way of offline image searches on desktop computers and provides a stepping stone to future content-based image retrieval systems built for similar purposes.

Abstract

Bacterial Swarm Optimization (BSO) is used to design Power System Stabilizers in a multi machine power system. In BSO, the search directions of tumble behavior for each bacterium are oriented by the individual’s best location and the global best location of PSO. The hybrid BFOA-PSO algorithm has been applied to IEEE 14 bus test system under normal, light and heavy load conditions. Simulations results have revealed the strength of the BSO in tuning Power System Stabilizers under normal, light and heavy load conditions. The results present the effectiveness of the controller to improve the power system stability over a different range of loading conditions.

Abstract

Today, the semiconductor industries are rapidly usinganalog and mixed signals to achieve cost-effective solutions on a System on Chip (SoC) design.  The SoC device is a part of analog, digital and essential mixed-signal models/circuits merged on a semiconductor device, which provides the platform to build modern retail/consumer electronics appliances with smart technology. In order to evaluate the mixed signals, the conventional approaches are not effective with respect to its performance, time and manufacturing cost. Thus, the recent researches were much interested in formal verification technique as it provides the evidence of conscious algorithms in a system. The demand for formal verification in the SoC designs in the context of software and hardware platform is high because of its cost and accuracy. Thus, the paper introduces atechnique of formal verification for mixed signals by using training models of the Differential fed neural network (DFNN) over feedforward neural network (FFNN). The formal verification is performed through equivalence checking by using recently adopted designs as reference designs. The outcomes of the verification techniques suggests that DFNN based technique improves the training accuracy and optimizes the hardware resources like area, power than the FFNN based technique.

Abstract

A Metal-Insulator-Metal (MIM) capacitor with high capacitance, high breakdown voltage, and low leakage current is aspired so that the device can be applied in many electronic applications. The most significant factors that affect the MIM capacitor’s performance is the design and the dielectric materials used. In this study, MIM capacitors are simulated using different dielectric materials and different number of dielectric layers from two layers up to seven layers.  The effect of the different dielectric constants (k) to the performance of the MIM capacitors is also studied, whereas this work investigates the effect of using low-k and high-k dielectric materials. The dielectric materials used in this study with high-k are Al2O3 and HfO2, while the low-k dielectric materials are SiO2 and Si3N4. The results demonstrate that the dielectric materials with high-k produce the highest capacitance. Results also show that metal-Al2O3 interfaces increase the performance of the MIM capacitors. By increasing the number of dielectric layers to seven stacks, the capacitance and breakdown voltage reach its highest value at 0.39 nF and 240 V, respectively.

Abstract

The lifestyle of the new people generation, called in the scientific literature Generation Z, is closely related to the Internet, computer and information technology. Therefore, people and children belonging to this group can be viewed in terms of software technology as specific users who have high requirements regarding the functions and interface of the software applications, connectivity to social networks and instant communication via the Internet. This influenced not only on the teaching and learning methods but also on the software applications used in the learning process. In recent years, new theoretical teaching methods have emerged, and the number of electronic learning systems increased. However, students lack motivation for the learning process. This requires developing new conceptual models of training and learning software, tailored to the skills and preferences of the end-users. The young students up to 12 years of age: from kindergartens to preschools and primary schools are special users who have not been studied exhaustively. In order to present the problem related to the development of learning and training software thoroughly, the most commonly used standards and current trends, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of LMS platforms have been reviewed. Attention is drawn to the commonly used software design and development technologies. This is the reason to propose a strategy for developing a web-based e-learning management system according to the possibilities of young pupils as a specific user. Having in mind this strategy we described a software architecture, based on SCORM's specification, and we developed an LMS prototype. Its design was tailored to the skills of young children. The basic methodology used in the design and creation of the system we propose is user-centered design. The document is intended for developers, educators and scientists, studying child-computer interaction.

Abstract

Since the discovery of 1D nano-object, they are constantly revealing significant physical properties. In this regard, carbon nanotube (CNT) is considered as a promising candidate for application in future nanoelectronics devices like carbon nanotube field effect transistor (CNTFET). In this work, the impact of chirality and gate oxide thikness on the electrical characteristics of a CNTFET are studied. The chiralities used are (5, 0), (10, 0), (19, 0), (26, 0), and the gate oxide thikness varied from 1 to 5 nm.This work is based on a numerical simulation program based on surface potential model. CNTFET Modeling is useful for semiconductor industries for nano scale devices manufacturing. From our results we have observed that the output current increases with chirality increasing.We have also highlight the importance of the gate oxide thickness on the drain current that increases when gate oxide is thin.

Abstract

This paper examines the frequency response of power plant grounding system exposed to the lightning current. Large amount of current generated by the stroke flow in the grounding system of power plant and dissipate in the soil.  The electric and magnetic field generated by such high voltages and currents may cause damage of equipment and may be dangerous for the personnel in power plant.  For the every given frequency obtained using Fast Fourier Transformation (FFT) of lightning current impulse, electromagnetic field theory approach is used to solve Maxell’s equation and compute scalar potential, electric and magnetic field. Also, the influence of the point in which lightning current is diffused in the grounding system is presented. Three dimensional plots of spatial distribution of scalar potential, electric and magnetic field are presented. The time domain response of scalar potential, electric and magnetic field on one profile is also presented.

Abstract

In this paper, a new Buck PFC dc–dc converter topology along with fuzzy logic control for a permanent magnet (PM) brushless dc motor (PMBLDCM) has been proposed. The proposed buck-PFC converter topology is on single stage power factor correction converter. A concept of dc link voltage control which is proportional to speed of the PMBLDCM is used in this paper. The stator currents of the PMBLDCM during step change in the reference speed are controlled within the specified limits by an addition of a rate limiter in the reference dc link voltage. The effectives of the proposed control strategy of PMBLDCM drive is validated through simulation results.
