Abstract

Communication strategies have something to do with ends and means. This current study attempts to answer the questions “What types of communication strategies were used by the speakers in speaking activities?” and “What were the functions of the communication strategies produced by the speakers in their interactions in performing the same tasks?” The investigation was conducted to the subjects taking Speaking Class at the English Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Muhammadiyah Palembang. The findings show that there were eleven types of communication strategies used by EFL learners in their interactions stimulated by the reading passages and pictures specifically utilized for data collection. Communication strategies were used by the speakers not only because of compensating for insufficient means, but also the need of communication.

Abstract

Concord is one of grammatical items from which many EFL learners still commit deviations. Their deviations from this grammatical item are a reflection of their concord mastery. There are five kinds of concord. However, this article aims at describing to what extent EFL learners have mastered 3 types of concord: subject-verb, subject-complement, and subject-object. The article was based on a part of the research entitled EFL Learners’ Concord Mastery and their grammatical Deviations carried out by the writer two years ago. The population was 120 EFL learners consisting of three classes of the third year students of the English Department of the Faculty of Languages, Literature, and Arts of the State University of Padang, and with cluster-sampling technique one class of them was chosen as the sample comprising of 32 subjects. The data were gathered through a fifty-item test with one administration, but the sample students were required to write 4 versions of the answers. There were 2 versions of concord mastery (CM), CM1 which was based on the correct answers of version 1 and CM 2 which was based on the correct answers after the grammatical deviations were split into mistakes and errors. With the use of quantitatively descriptive method, it was found out that on the average the EFL learners’ CM1 was only 64 which was categorized into satisfactory level based on 5 achievement categories proposed by UNP (2005): excellent, good, satisfactory, weak, and poor. However, CM2 on the average increased significantly to 70, and the achievement category changed into good level. The writer believes CM2 was the actual concord mastery of the EFL learners. Thus, he suggests that an EFL lecturer/ teacher not neglect concord and (s)he split grammatical deviations into mistakes and errors in order to know actual mastery of any grammatical item.

Abstract

This research dealt with deviations or errors of morphosyntax of grammatical categories which consist of structural properties and distributional properties of nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs made by the first semester English graduate students of State University of Padang (UNP) in writing their essays. It aimed at explaining what errors of morphosyntax of grammatical categories committed by those students in writing their essays. The subjects of this research were the first semester English graduate students of 2008/ 2009 academic year of UNP. There were 15 randomly selected students who took the course of Academic Writing as the subjects of the research. The instrument used was through a test with one administration where the lecturer asked the students to construct essays based on the topics given. The analysis of data was based on theories proposed by Payne (1997) describing morphosyntax, error analysis method by James (1998) and Scovel (2001). It was found out that deviations of morphosyntax of grammatical categories mostly occurred. First, in the mis-formation of verbs (54.45%) as a structural property that exhibits subject agreement and in the omission of verbs which serves as predicates of clauses as a distributional property. Second, in the misformation of nouns (32.07%) exhibiting number as structural property and in the omission of nouns as a distributional property which serves as heads of noun phrases. Third, in the misformation of adjective (8.33%) which exhibits predicative function; and fourth in the errors of omission suffix –ly in adverbs (5.05%) modifying verbs. The findings reveal that the use of correct morphosyntax of grammatical categories of the first semester English graduate students of 2008/ 2009 academic year of UNP in writing essays is low implication?

Abstract

Male and female are said to speak differently in any communities. Many studies have made use of oral discourse as the source of the data and it is very rare found that the studies make use of written discources. This study is based on the students writing entitled “Experience during Vacation”. They are the fifth grade of 09 Elementary School Air Tawar Barat Padang. After analyzing their writings, it is found that female students produce more words, more verbs, more sentences (verbal or nominal and simple or embedded) compared to male students. In addition, female students produce less mistakes in using capital letter and other mechanical matters. The male students, on the other hand, produce less words, less verbs, less sentences (verbal or nominal and simple or embedded) compared to female students. In addition, male students produce more mistakes in using capital letter and other mechanical matters. One interesting thing is that even though male students produce less verbs in numbers, they have more various verbs compared to female students. Many female students use the same verbs as others and some use the same verbs repeatedly in their writings. The male students did not repeat the use of the same words very often.

Abstract

This article discusses and interpretes the findings of the study of the implementation of English instruction at Elementary Schools of Padang City. Through observation, questionnaire, informal interview, and documentation, the data were collected from the sample of state schools which offer English as the local subject. Using descriptive analysis technique, it was found that the implementation of the English instructional strategies did not truly follow the directions designed for the elementary school students for the teachers did not have definitive curriculum. Thus, the instruction was not much in a good track, that is (1) oral language skills tended to be ignored; (2) the instruction for three grades of the students (3, 4, and 5) was seen overlapped for they used the same book as the only source of the teaching materials; (3) the instructional assessment was conducted in all kinds, such as process evaluation, port-folio, formative and summative test. However, it was mostly on the written form, different from the objective of English learning at the elementary schools; and (4) there were problems faced in offering the subject, namely, the teachers were not fully given the opportunity to improve their English, and the status of English as local subject makes the subject ignored by the headmasters of schools.

Abstract

This paper discusses ‘Miss USA, Emma Knight’, a short story written by Studs Terkel. The analysis of the story reveals how the industries of capitalism through the discourse of beauty contest has distorted the meaning of American Dreams in order to gain and accumulate as much profit as possible. Miss Universe Incorporated, as the representation of the capitalist in this analysis, has in such a way intimidated and exploited ‘its worker’, Emma Knight, the beauty queen of Miss USA to overwork nights and days, as if she were a money machine. However, at the same time, this beautiful intelligent queen, whose personal meaning of American Dreams differs from those of the mainstreams’, takes the opportunity of being a queen to show her own meaning of the dreams. Thus she takes her responsibilities of being Miss USA on her own terms.
