Abstract

This paper implements and compares the existing power supply converters for an energy storage system to determine the best suited for the smart grid application. A survey of different DC-DC converters is carried out to analyze the battery's overall performance. The main objective is to identify this application's most appropriate energy storage device. The advantages of this technology have high efficiency and reliability, which can connect various energy sources and reduce conduction losses in the power converters. Through the converter control, reference currents are imposed to charge the battery. The battery nominal voltage needs to change to see which type of converter is the most suitable and robust. Simulation results show that the operating ranges of boost-buck, buck-boost, and buck-boost converters with negative output voltage enhance the efficiency of battery and renewable energy sources and compared the DC converters to know the functional voltage for the energy storage system. The power converter's efficiency and control facility will allow us to link the energy storage system with the power grid. The overall installation is established using MATLAB/Simulink software.

Abstract

DC-DC converters exhibiting minimal input and output ripple are extensively employed across a diverse range of applications. This paper presents a proposed modification to the DC-DC Cuk converter. The converter is developed by modifying a conventional Cuk DC-DC converter to exhibit boost characteristics. The DC-DC converters possess the capability to function as versatile units that can be employed in a multitude of applications, ranging from DC-DC conversion to DC-AC conversion (inversion). This paper presents a novel DC-DC converter design that aims to achieve reduced ripple in both input and output currents. By employing the principle of mutual inductance, it is possible to further mitigate the presence of ripple current. The analysis of the impact of mutual inductance on the output voltage and ripple current of the proposed converter has been conducted. The validity of the derived analytical method has been confirmed through both simulated and experimental investigations. The utilization of mutual inductance in the proposed modified Cuk converter has been demonstrated to result in reduced current ripple.

Abstract

The proposed control scheme is based on the least mean square (LMS) algorithm. The LMS algorithm is employed to estimate the necessary reference tracking current for the active power filter (APF). The proposed control scheme aims to enhance the dynamic response of the APF and minimize steady-state error. The weights of the LMS technique are calculated based on the estimated current of the APF. This algorithm is employed to minimize the error difference between the desired system output and its actual output, known as the mean square error (MSE). The estimated weights are utilized to modify the reference current weights, enabling them to follow the intended current of the APF. The online adaption of the LMS method involves the real-time adjustment of the weights. The performance of the LMS-based APF control is evaluated through a simulation study in MATLAB/Simulink, where it is compared with the conventional control method.

Abstract

Research on electric vehicle chargers primarily focuses on improving charging technology to enhance the convenience, quality, efficiency, and affordability of charging electric vehicles. This paper discusses a different AC-DC power converter topology proposed as a potential candidate for electric vehicle battery charger. Using the proposed converter circuit, the charging process of electric vehicle battery can be simply adjusted to meet the battery requirement, and even for increasing the charging speed while avoiding overcharging of battery. During the charging process, if the voltage of battery approaches to the targeted battery voltage level, the charging current can be reduced gradually to zero. Hence it will prevent the battery from overcharging condition. Moreover, the ability of working at high power factor operation, low distortion of alternating current (AC) input current, and low direct current (DC) output current ripple are other features of the proposed charger circuits. Some test results of the proposed power converter were presented. The test results revealed potential features of the converter for battery charger of electric vehicle with power factor 0.9996, total harmonic distortion (THD) of AC current 2.73%, and low charging current ripple, i.e. 3.91%. Therefore, it minimizes the negative effects caused by ripples of charging current especially for lithium-ion batteries widely used in electric vehicles.

Abstract

Recent power quality (PQ) research shows that the most common types of power quality disturbances are voltage sags and swells in medium and low-voltage distribution grids. This paper shows how to improve two significant power quality disturbances: sags and swells voltage. To find out what effect these two PQ issues have in real life, a study case based on real nonlinear loads data from large induction motors at Beshai Company in Sadat City in Egypt is investigated. The dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) has been suggested as a solution to the voltage swell and voltage sag issues. The point of common coupling (PCC) is linked with the dynamic voltage restorer to mitigate the PQ problems that have been found. The power network, loads, and DVR may all be modeled using the MATLAB/Simulink platform. The jellyfish search optimizer (JFS) is used to get the gain settings of the proportional and integral (PI) controller for the proposed DVR. MATLAB/Simulink's results show that the proposed device is effective, reliable, and has low latency.

Abstract

Traditionally, steady-state assessment involves analyzing numerous variables using Eigen analysis. This paper presents a decision support application for diagnosing the steady-state assessment of droop-controlled voltage source inverters in islanded microgrid operations or weak grid operations with reduced input attributes. This paper proposes an approach using feature extraction from the state space variables of the droop-controlled voltage source inverter (VSI). Photovoltaic (PV) and wind energy sources are considered with their stipulated power-delivering capability considered. To improve the generalization of the predictive model, preprocessing techniques are employed to eliminate data distortions. Dimensionality reduction is achieved through principal component analysis (PCA) applied to the steady-state variables. The evaluation of the VSI's steady-state stability is conducted utilizing support vector classification algorithm. To ascertain the reliability of the steady-state stability classification, an assessment of the support vector machine (SVM) model's performance is carried out, which includes the examination of metrics like the area under the curve (AUC) and the receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve. The findings from the assessment of VSI's steady-state stability indicate a commendable level of performance, achieving an accuracy rate of 93.5%.

Abstract

This work studied the actual and simulated technical performance between two grid-connected photovoltaic (GCPV) systems representing opposite latitudes. The system with a capacity of 5.4 kWp installed in Kelantan, Malaysia represents the northern equator, and the 183.6 kWp system installed in Cikarang, Indonesia, denotes the southern equator. The performance was simulated using PVsyst software, which included the energy output (E_outt), reference yield (Y_r), final yield 〖(Y〗_f), performance ratio (PR), and capacity factor (CF). The mean bias error (MBE) between the actual and simulated technical performance were as follows; for system A, the yearly MBE for the E_out, Y_r, Y_f, PR, and CF were -0.4%, 17.1%, -1.4%, -15.8%, and 1.4%, respectively, and for system B, the E_out, Y_r, 〖 Y〗_f, PR, and CF values were 9.80%, 18.3%, 10.0%, -7.2%, and 10.0% respectively. The results have proven that PVsyst has successfully simulated the yearly E_out, 〖 Y〗_f and CF for both systems including PR, for system B, with MBE less than 10%. However, it is noteworthy to highlight that PVsyst significantly overestimated the Y_r of both systems up to 18.3% and conversely underestimated the PR for system A by 15.8%, which highly likely caused by the Meteonorm imported weather data.

Abstract

This paper presents a novel Li-Ion battery charger that utilizes a low-dropout (LDO) regulator and incorporates four control modes: low constant current mode, pre-charge current mode, fast constant current mode, and constant voltage mode. The charger aims to meet specific criteria such as high precision, high efficiency, and small form factor. Through simulation results, the following specifications were obtained using a 1.8 V supply in a 0.18 μm complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) technology: a trickle current of 124.7 mA, a pre-charge current of 466.94 mA, a maximum charge current of 1.06 A, and a charge voltage of 4.21 V. The proposed charger demonstrates an efficiency of 92%.

Abstract

The paper examines a strategy for managing voltage control in a microgrid by redistributing reactive power among its distributed generators. Unlike traditional droop control, the new control approach can provide a more accurate reactive power response based on a virtual impedance that helps calculate a virtual voltage. In addition, this virtual impedance is employed for the current controller inverter to improve the results. The adaptive virtual voltage control works well to provide active and reactive power. The proposed control works effectively by balancing the active and reactive power of the grid and maintains the fundamental frequency. The control technique assists the new microgrid (MG) in adapting the operation effectively and redistributing the active and reactive power.

Abstract

In the continuity of the work on design of high voltage gain DC-DC converter, used for feeding the CubeSat electrospray thrusters with a variable output voltage according to the maneuver size, this paper introduces a simulation of the converter model with MATLAB/Simulink to determine its conducted emission level. By referring to the MIL-STD-461 standard, a required passive electromagnetic interference (EMI) filter parameters are calculated to reduce, under thresholds, the converter noise. With consideration of the available volume and power constraints in this kind of satellite, the design of common-mode (CM) choke is optimized with proposed procedure optimization, so as to reduce its volume and electrical losses. Also, this optimization procedure can be generalized and applied for any passive EMI filter design.
