Abstract

Estimation of motor inertia and friction components is a complex and challenging task in motion control applications where small size DC motors (<100W) are used for precise control. It is essential to estimate the accurate friction components and motor inertia, because the parameters provided by the manufacturer are not always accurate.  This research proposes a Sensorless method of determining DC motor parameters, including moment of inertia, torque coefficient and frictional components using the Disturbance Observer (DOB) as a torque sensor. The constant velocity motion test and a novel Reverse Motion Acceleration test were conducted to estimate frictional components and moment of inertia of the motor. The validity of the proposed novel method was verified by experimental results and compared with conventional acceleration and deceleration motion tests. Experiments have been carried out to show the effectiveness and viability of the estimated parameters using a Reaction Torque Observer (RTOB) based friction compensation method.

Abstract

In this paper, the optimal control problem of a nonlinear robot manipulator in absence of holonomic constraint force based on the point of view of adaptive dynamic programming (ADP) is presented. To begin with, the manipulator was intervened by exact linearization. Then the framework of ADP and Robust Integral of the Sign of the Error (RISE) was developed. The ADP algorithm employs Neural Network technique to tune simultaneously the actor-critic network to approximate the control policy and the cost function, respectively. The convergence of weight as well as position tracking control problem was considered by theoretical analysis. Finally, the numerical example is considered to illustrate the effectiveness of proposed control design.

Abstract

This paper proposes the new voltage controller in photo-voltaic system for Stand-Alone Applications with battery energy storage. The output of the PV array is unregulated DC supply due to change in weather conditions. The maximum power is tracked with respect to temperature and irradiance levels by using DC-DC converter. The perturbation and observes algorithm is applied for maximum power point tracking (MPPT) purpose. This algorithm is selected due to its ability to withstand against any parameter variation and having high efficiency. The solar cell array powers the steady state energy and the battery compensates the dynamic energy in the system. The aim of the control strategy is to control the SEPIC converter and bi-direction DC-DC converter to operate in suitable modes according to the condition of solar cell and battery, so as to coordinate the two sources of solar cell and battery supplying power and ensure the system operates with high efficiency and behaviors with good dynamic performance. The output of DC-DC converter is converted to AC voltage by using inverter.  The AC output voltage and frequency are regulated. A closed loop voltage control for inverter is done by using unipolar sine wave pulse width modulation (SPWM). The regulated AC voltage is fed to AC standalone loads or grid integration. The overall system is designed, developed and validated by using MATLAB-SIMULINK. The simulation results demonstrate the effective working of MPPT algorithm, control strategy and voltage controller with SPWM technique for inverter in AC standalone load applications.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijpeds.v2i1.127

Abstract

The conventional line-commutated ac-to-dc converters/ inverters have square-shaped line current. It contains higher-order harmonics which generates EMI and it causes more heating of the core of distribution or power transformers. PWM based inverters using MOSFET/IGBT have higher switching losses, and the power handling capability and reliability are quite low in comparison to thyristors/ SCR. A thyristor based forced commutated inverters are not suitable for PWM applications due to the problems of commutation circuits. A pure sinusoidal voltage output or waveform with low harmonic contents is most desirable for ac load using dc to ac conversion. This paper presents a new multilevel inverter topology in which three phase ac- to-dc converter circuits are used in inversion mode by controlling the switching angle. Due to natural commutation, no separate circuit is required for synchronization. In this paper simulation and analysis are done for grid-tied three-phase 6-pulse, Two three-phase, 3-pulse and 12-pulse converter. These converters are analysed for different battery voltage and different switching angle combinations in order to reduce the total harmonic distortion (THD). Three-phase harmonic filters are further added to the grid side to reduce the harmonic content in the line current. A comparative study of these converters is also presented in this paper.

Abstract

Today power electronics play an important role in the electric industry. Power electronic converters are an inseparable component in power systems. One of these converters is DC/AC inverter that is widely used in power systems, industrial applications, electric motor drive and electric vehicles. Due to the tense situation with the complexity that exists in these applications, inverters are exposed to failure. The fault occurring in inverter can cause disturbance and damaging harmonics, cut some industrial processes to in the power system or in the case of electric vehicles, causing irreparable damage. For this reason, detecting faults in the inverter is very important. In this paper, open circuit fault of IGBT in an electric vehicle has been examined. We use three-phase current and wavelet transform to identify the state of the system and we can extract current waveform characteristics. We use neural network algorithm for fault detection and classification.  An electric vehicle in 5 different speeds and 5 different torque and a total of 220 failure modes have been studied and tested. The results show the method has been succeeded to detection all forms of defined faults

Abstract

This paper presents a new adaptive hysteresis band control approach used in direct torque control (DTC) of the induction motor (IM) drives with the switching tables for the generation of PWM signals. Constant Hysteresis Direct torque control (CHB-DTC) method used the torque and stator flux errors to generate the stator voltage reference and frequency vectors for controlling the three-phase induction motor. The CHB-DTC gives better torque transient performance but it has large steady state ripples. To reduce torque and stator current ripples in CHB-DTC controlled induction motor drives a new adaptive hysteresis band control (AHB) approach is proposed, where the hysteresis band is adapted in real time with the stator flux and torque errors variation, instead of fixed bandwidth. Both classical CHB-DTC method and the proposed adaptive hysteresis band DTC (AHB-DTC) fed three induction motor have been simulated using Matlab/Simulink. The simulation results at different operating conditions over a wide speed range demonstrate the validity, effectiveness, and feasibility of the proposed scheme. The measurements showed that torque ripples were significantly decrease with the new AHB-DTC technique and better speed response in step up or down compared to the CHB-DTC.

Abstract

This paper presents developing an mathematical model for linear switched reluctance motor (LSRM) with account of the mutual inductance between the phases. Mutual interaction between the phases of LSRM gives the positive effect, as a rule the power of the machine is increased by 5-15%.

Abstract

One of the advanced power applications using energy storage is the integration of energy storage technologies with VSC-based FACTS controllers. With the support of energy storage device, FACTS controllers will have the ability to exchange active power or energy with the ac network in steady state. This paper discusses the impact of Static Synchronous Compensator incorporating energy storage device (STATCOM-ES) on subsynchronous resonance (SSR). It also proposes the design of an auxiliary SSR damping controller (SSDC) for STATCOM-ES to damp the subsynchronous oscillations which the system is undergoing because of a series capacitor in the transmission system. The system under consideration is IEEE FBM which is modified to incorporate STATCOM-ES at the electrical midpoint. The investigation of SSR characteristics when a STATCOM - ES operating in bus voltage regulation mode is carried out by eigenvalue and damping torque analysis. Transient analysis based on the nonlinear model is also performed to validate the results obtained by conventional methods.

Abstract

The use of loads in the past few days is becoming vast, giving an alarm signal to the power system and electronics engineers in terms of power quality. Due to the large amount of non-linear power electronics, utilities frequently experience voltage and harmonic distortions every day. In this paper, the combination of the Series active power filter SAPF with a PV source is deliberated. The PV based on the SAPF aims to compensate voltage deviations or disturbances that occur in the system caused by power quality issues. The proposed system consists of a PV source connected to the DC link through two dc-dc converters, the first extracts the maximum power of the PV source through pulse with modulation PWM signals generated from the maximum power point tracker MPPT controller. Thus, the second converter is used to regulate the high voltage side of the converter through closed control loops using Fuzzy Logic Controller FLC, in addition to a voltage source inverter VSI and a series injection transformer. Despite of fluctuations of the DC link during the compensation of the needed energy, MPPT and closed control loops generate PWM signals to the switching devices of dc-dc boost converters in order to extract maximum PV power and to maintain the bus voltage within its limits and around its reference values respectively. The proposed topology is simulated in Matlab Simulink software, where simulation results show that the proposed PV based SAPF can efficiently reduce problems of voltage sag and harmonic.

Abstract

This paper deals with the simulation and implementation of multilevel inverter for drives application. Here the focuses will be on improving the efficiency of the multilevel inverter and quality of output voltage waveform. The circuit is developed towards high efficiency, high performance, and low cost, simple control scheme. Harmonics Elimination were implemented to reduce the Total Harmonics Distortion (THD) value which is achieved by selecting appropriate switching angles. In this paper to determine the performance of rectifier, steady state analysis is done.  Furthermore, the merits of multilevel inverter topology are inherited.Closed loop control is done to analysis the stability of the system.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijpeds.v4i3.5937
