Abstract

This study aims to analyze the da'wah messages in the film Cinta Dalam Ikhlas using Roland Barthes' semiotic approach. This research is motivated by the growing role of film as an effective communication medium for conveying Islamic values to society. The method used is descriptive qualitative, with data collection techniques through observation and documentation of scenes, dialogues, character expressions, and visual symbols containing da'wah messages. Data analysis is conducted based on Barthes' three levels of meaning: denotation, connotation, and myth. The results show that the film Cinta Dalam Ikhlas contains da'wah messages conveyed through scenes, dialogues, and characters' expressions. At the denotative level, the film portrays the reality of the characters' lives related to romance, family, and life struggles. At the connotative level, it reflects Islamic values such as patience, sincerity, trust in God (tawakal), maintaining good manners, and devotion to parents (birrul walidain). At the myth level, the film represents the ideal concept of a Muslim life based on faith and obedience to God. Based on the findings, moral values (akhlak) are the most prominent messages, particularly patience, sincerity, tawakal, and respect for parents. This research contributes to the development of da'wah communication studies, particularly in the use of semiotic analysis to reveal Islamic messages in film media.

Abstract

This study examines the practice of symbolic da’wah in the pilgrimage ritual at the Tomb of Sunan Gunung Jati, Cirebon, with a focus on how pilgrims interpret and construct meanings of symbols. The study aims to analyze pilgrimage ritual symbols as a medium of cultural da’wah communication from a phenomenological perspective. A qualitative phenomenological approach was employed through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Data were collected from five informants consisting of local pilgrims, out-of-town pilgrims, caretakers of the tomb (juru kunci), traders, and tomb managers during the period of January–March 2026.The findings show that symbols such as tahlil, collective prayers, tomb etiquette rules, acts of devotion (khusyuk), and the role of the caretaker are interpreted as media for the internalization of Islamic values in a nonverbal and participatory manner. Social interactions among pilgrims also shape diverse processes of religious meaning-making depending on individual experiences and socio-cultural backgrounds. The study reveals that pilgrimage practices are not only understood as spiritual rituals but also as a space for symbolic da’wah communication embedded within community culture.The novelty of this research lies in its interpretation of pilgrimage as a process of symbolic da’wah communication based on lived social and cultural experiences, rather than merely a religious tradition. Thus, culture has the potential to serve as a contextual and participatory medium of da’wah within Indonesian Muslim society.

Abstract

This study examines the perceptions of Indonesian netizens on the Kompas.com TikTok social media platform regarding the death of Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21, 2025. The death of Pope Francis was a global event that also stirred the Indonesian digital space, particularly in the comment sections of the Kompas.com TikTok account, giving rise to diverse dynamics of religious tolerance. As a multireligious country, Indonesia faces its own challenges in maintaining interfaith harmony, and social media platforms such as TikTok have become highly dynamic public spaces in shaping public perceptions toward religious figures across different faiths. This study aims to determine how Indonesian netizens perceive the death of Pope Francis, particularly in relation to the value of religious tolerance. The research method employed was qualitative research using a netnographic approach with a descriptive methodology. Primary data was collected through documentation of comments on the Kompas.com TikTok account between April 21 and May 12, 2025. Data analysis was conducted using the Miles and Huberman model through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing, grounded in the Theory of Planned Behavior. The findings reveal that Indonesian netizens' perceptions fall into three categories: positive, negative, and neutral comments. Positive comments reflect a high level of tolerance, with the majority of Muslim netizens respecting Pope Francis as a symbol of universal humanity. Negative comments reflect a lack of empathy, such as inappropriate jokes. Meanwhile, neutral comments proved to be the most meaningful voices, as they reflect religious moderation alive within the digital space. Overall, this study concludes that the majority of Indonesian netizens, particularly Muslims, possess a high level of tolerance maturity, making humanitarian values a bridge that transcends theological differences, in line with the spirit of Islam rahmatan lil 'alamin. This study is expected to enrich the study of digital communication regarding netizen behavior in responding to sensitive religious issues in the public sphere.
