Abstract

Acne vulgaris (AV) is a chronic inflammation of the follicle pilosebaceous induced by Propionibacterium acnes. Anxious circumstances increase the androgen hormones. This increases the production of sebum and the proliferation then activates Propionibacterium acnes, resulting in AV. To find out the relationship between levels of anxiety and the onset of AV to the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FK USU) 2016 – 2018 conducted observational research with cross sectional design. This research samples as many as 66 students of FK USU Group 2016 – 2018 and using stratified random sampling method. The result of anxiety level of FK USU students indicates that there are mild anxiety (92.4%) moderate anxiety (6.1%) and severe anxiety (1.5%). The AV event of FK USU students indicates that there are mild acne (51.5%) moderate acne (40.9%) severe acne (6.1%) and normal results (1.5%). With the chi square test there is a significant link between the level of anxiety and the onset of the vulgaris (p = 0.026). There is a significant relationship between the levels of anxiety with the onset of AV on student of FK USU 2016-2018.

Abstract

Background. One indicator of a country's health status is the Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR). Every pregnant woman has potential dangers during pregnancy, childbirth, and puerperium. Until now, in all parts of the world, risky pregnancies, especially high-risk pregnancies, are still a problem in health services, especially in developing countries. In Indonesia, MMR decreased during the period 1991-2015 from 390 to 305 per 100,000 live births. However, this is still far from the MDGs target goal, which is 102 per 100,000 live births. Many women are still pregnant or giving birth at a risky age. This condition leads to many complications (especially high-risk pregnancies) such as miscarriage, premature birth, genetic disorders, and even death. This may occur due to the lack of knowledge and education of general practitioners who serve pregnant women, especially in peripheral areas. Objective. This study aims to determine the knowledge level of Medical students of Universitas Sumatera Utara about risky pregnancy. Methods. This research was conducted in a quantitative descriptive study with a cross-sectional design. This research was conducted at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sumatera Utara. The samples of this study were students of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sumatera Utara, which were taken by proportionate stratified. Primary data was collected using a questionnaire containing 21 true and false questions. Result. It was found that the knowledge of students from the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sumatera Utara class 2018 and 2019 regarding risky pregnancies was good (85.7%). Conclusion. Students of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sumatera Utara, class of 2019 have better knowledge than students of class 2018.

Abstract

Abstract. Stress is a non-specific response of the body to any form of changes. Stress is generally considered synonymous with distress. Long study duration and high academic achievement targets have the potential to cause stress in medical students. Prolonged stress can cause sleep disturbances in a person. Sleep disorders are a group of conditions that can disrupt sleep patterns. Objective. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of stress on sleep disorders in undergraduate students at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sumatera Utara. Methods. This research is an analytic study with a cross-sectional design. Respondents are undergraduate students at the Faculty of Medicine, University of North Sumatra, class of 2018-2021. Data was obtained through a questionnaire instrument. Results. Of the 103 respondents, 58 (56.3%) reported experiencing stressful events with sleep disturbances. Conclusion. There was a significant relationship (P = 0.047) between stress and sleep disorders in students at the Faculty of Medicine, University of North Sumatra. In majority, the type of their sleep disorder are nightmares.

Abstract

Introduction. Probiotics are widely used in health research because it is considered to be beneficial for human health. Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota is one of the lactic acid bacteria which mostly found in commercial drink. This bactery can improve gut’s immunity towards pathogen by producing bacteriocin which is able to lower the pH in the gut. However it was found inappropriate probiotic product storaging, inappropriate way of consuming probiotic drink and the mixing of probiotic drink with other drinks randomly could disrupt the viability of probiotic bacteria which would reduce the benefits of the probiotic drink. Aim. The aim of this study is to observe the knowledge, attitude and behaviour level from students of faculty of medicine Universitas Sumatera Utara towards Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota in probiotic drink. Method. This is a descriptive research with cross sectional approach. The research is collecting primary data using questionnaire about knowledge, attitude and behaviour level towards Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota in probiotic drinks. Result. From 152 respondents who met all the criteria, there are 48,7% respondents have good knowledge level, 45,4% sufficient and 5,9% deficient. Moreover, there are 22,4% respondents have good attitude level, 47,4% sufficient and 30,3% deficient. Also, there are 77% respondents have good behaviour level, 21% sufficient and 2,0% deficient. Conclusion. Majority of respondents have good knowledge level, sufficient attitude level and good behaviour level towards Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota.

Abstract

Abstract: Acne vulgaris (AV) is a multifactorial disease of the pilosebaceous unit with varying degrees of severity, recurrent and characterized by polymorphic lesions. Recent studies have found that the etiopathogenesis of AV is caused by oxidative stress. Each factor that causes AV is interrelated and is under the control of hormones and immunity. Measurement of malondialdehyde (MDA) level in the blood becomes a biological marker or an indicator of cell and tissue damage caused by oxidative stress. Case: A 23-years-old female private employee visited the clinic for multiple comedones and papulopustular lesions scattered over cheeks, nose, and chin that spread to the whole face four months ago. There were multiple comedones, papules, pustules, nodules on the maxillary, nasalis, left and right zigomatic, mentalis and frontalis region. We also found multiple scars on the left and right buccal. She was diagnosed with Severe AV. Serum MDA level was measured according to the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method before and after therapy. She was treated with doxycycline 100 mg, 0.025% tretinoin cream, 5% benzoyl peroxide, 1.2% clindamycin gel, and broadspectrum sunscreen with SPF 50. Result: After eight weeks of treatment, there were noticeable improvements in acne lesions and overall healthier-looking skin. Serum MDA levels are decreased (22.6 nmol/ml to 17.9 nmol/ml) as the impact of the therapy. Keyword: Acne Vulgaris, Malondialdehyde, Oxidative Stress

Abstract

Background: Assessment of length of stay and mortality in patients with burn injuries is essential to support clinicians in making clinical decisions. In Indonesia, there are several scoring systems used by hospital centers to assess the mortality of burn patients, such as the Belgian Outcome of Burn Injury (BOBI) and the Abbreviated Burn Severity Index (ABSI). However, different results were obtained in studies that examined the comparison of the results of the scoring system. Method: The type of research used in this research is unpaired comparative analysis research using a cross-sectional design. The data to be used is secondary data taken from medical records. Results: Respondents with death status were found in the serious, severe, and maximum ABSI categories, p=0.001 (p<0.05) and the BOBI 50% category as many as three people and 85% as many as one person, p=0.0001 (0<0.05). Length of stay based on the ABSI score for the length of stay was 23 days with an ABSI score of 12-13 (maximum), and based on the BOBI Score, the majority was 28 days with a BOBI score of 8 (85%). ABSI in this study had a sensitivity of 100% and a specificity of 86.4%, while the use of BOBI in this study had a sensitivity of 100% and a specificity of 88.1%. Discussion: The BOBI scoring system is more accurate than the ABSI. This difference may occur due to differences in demographics and quality of service in each region. Therefore, the analysis of the validity of the scoring model before the research is carried out in a new population is considered crucial to be carried out.
