Abstract

This activity arises from an awareness of the great potential of traditional herbal medicine, which has long been an important part of Indonesian culture. In this case, the Sukun sub-district turns out to have hidden potential in the form of the traditional herbal medicine product "Jandasare". However, due to limited knowledge of digital marketing and branding, coupled with the fact that the market for traditional herbal medicine is becoming increasingly limited, especially among the younger generation, products from the Sukun sub-district are less considered for consumption. The community activity in the Sukun sub-district includes a series of steps, starting from market and competitor analysis, redesigning product packaging, to training producers in digital marketing. We also conducted digital marketing implementation by selling products online through Instagram Live to increase public understanding of the benefits of traditional herbal medicine. The results of this activity show a significant increase in public knowledge about the benefits of traditional herbal medicine and its use. A more modern and informative packaging design also increased consumer interest, especially among the younger generation. Additionally, herbal medicine producers have successfully improved product quality and used online platforms to market products more effectively. The importance of adapting traditional herbal medicine to the modern market is highlighted. Through rebranding and digital marketing changes, Jandasare herbal medicine is able to bridge the gap between tradition and contemporary development, proving that cultural heritage can remain relevant in the digital age. This community service activity has successfully mobilized economic potential in the Sukun sub-district through empowering traditional herbal medicine producers and increasing consumer interest. This demonstrates that branding strategies and marketing digitalization are key to maintaining and advancing traditional products in the modern era.

Abstract

Abstract The gig economy's emergence and growth are relatively recent in the Philippines. Nevertheless, it has brought a new type of labor market, boundaryless careers, with numerous advantages or benefits and ethical quandaries or dilemmas for gig workers. This paper seeks to respond to emerging ethical issues by analyzing gig work based on algorithmic control, vulnerable employment terms, and the absence of special rights for gig workers. Incorporating an evaluative research methodology, secondary data in the form of journal articles, industry reports, and publications were gathered and examined about these ethical issues and recommendations being made. The participants' accounts show that Filipino gig workers experience precarity arising from employment categorization, lack of access to social protection, and severe financial precarity deepened by algorithmic management. However, it should be noted that gig work as an arrangement is often decentralized and fluid, and the workers can still rarely escape instability and low-income or income volatility. The study suggests implementing and enacting new legislative measures based on EU recommendations and suggestions to safeguard gig economy workers and establish ethical standards or guidelines for employment agreements in the Philippines. The primary proposals include legalizing labor relations in the context of gig work, developing technological and digital skills, and raising appropriate compensation. With these findings, the current study emphasizes and highlights the importance of legislative change for gig workers' rights and the equitable and fair nature of labor relationships in the growing gig economy. Keywords: Gig economy, boundaryless careers, ethical issues, labor rights, Philippine labor market. Abstract

Public procurement, the acquisition of goods, services, and works by government entities, is a crucial governance mechanism involving nongovernment players to achieve policy objectives. Despite the Philippines' Government Procurement Reform Act (GPRA) aiming to streamline and standardize procurement processes, corruption, delays, and inadequate management persist. This study comprehensively analyzes public procurement concerns in the Philippines using the Commission on Audit (COA) Annual Reports from 2012 to 2022. Employing directed content analysis with inductive coding, the study identifies 42 weaknesses in public procurement, categorized into procurement management, strategy and planning issues, execution and delivery challenges, financial and budgetary concerns, documentation and compliance gaps, and procurement method issues. Among these, the most frequent issues include inadequate preparation and planning, delayed document submission for audits, and unauthorized or delayed contract awards. Findings indicate significant documentation and compliance gaps, which align with international studies and highlight the need for better management and strategic planning in Philippine public procurement. The study's results suggest that procurement activities in the Philippines require more thorough planning and oversight to avoid dire future consequences. Limitations of the study include the reliance on secondary data and a sample limited to seven government-owned and controlled corporations. Future research should incorporate primary data, larger samples, and inferential analysis to understand better and address procurement challenges. Overall, this study contributes to the literature on public procurement, offering valuable insights for policymakers and stakeholders aiming to enhance procurement processes and achieve greater government accountability.

Abstract

As of this date, the global halal economy is significantly growing. The Philippines is one of those countries where the Muslim population is significantly increasing, which also resulted in a heightened demand for Halal-certified products and services in the industry. Halal certification is prominent because it undergoes a process where they certify products and services. This is also significant to non-Muslim consumers who embrace halal as one of their lifestyles. With this growing significance and potential economic viability, opportunities has opened for businesses to invest in halal certification. However, despite the significant growth, potential halal business owners still struggle from participating in this growing market due to the challenges they face, particularly in micro and small sector. A primary study found out the common barriers that are usually encountered and most of it are drawn from inconsistent interpretations by different certifying bodies. This study aims to address these challenges by offering recommendations to policymakers such as the halal-certifying bodies about the difficulties these businesses encounter. By addressing these challenges, the study seeks to help business owners recognize the competitive advantage of getting halal certification, given that not all are aware of its benefits. Furthermore, this study will help

Abstract

This paper reports on the barriers and realities confronting community participation in community development. The paper provides possible suggestions on how inclusive participation may aid the sustainability of community development projects. Community participation refers to the involvement of individuals or groups in activities, initiatives, or decision-making processes that affect their community. It is about engaging with others to contribute ideas, resources, and efforts towards common goals and improvements within a community. This paper adopted a focused mapping review synthesis to gather the critical tenets of community participation. The author has demonstrated in this paper that community participation is mainly used as a procedural issue without really using it to canvas the views of rural community people. Mainly, it is applied as a “tick a box” exercise in which authorities do not use it to empower the community members nor adopt their views for the purpose of decision-making. Moreover, this paper demonstrates that community participation is more effective and has the potential to result in empowerment when the primacy is on training and building the capacity of beneficiaries. The author argues that community participation that is not inclusive and does not link the views of beneficiaries to decision-making is likely to result in programs that do not address the needs of beneficiaries.
