Abstract

The children language aacquisition is influenced by the surrounding environment. The data were collected from preschool children. The conclusion of the research is children learned things beyond vocabulary and grammar. They are able to use language in many social contexts. The movies, which they watch, also influence their language acquisition. It can be seen from the use of words, phrases, and sentences from movies. Then, they imitate the words, phrases, and sentences in it. In addition, the child also may generalize of it. It is because of their limitations.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to describe the effect of environment toward students’ learning style in studying English at Kecamatan Koto XI Tarusan, Pesisir Selatan. English is an important subject for students since it has many tourism destinations. So, the students should have a capability in English in order to promote their areas. In learning English, each student has different way or different learning style. One of the factors that influences their learning style is an environment. The method of this reseach is causal-comparative. The sample used purposive sampling. The researcher chose 4 schools located in different environment; they are Junior High School number 9  located close to beach, Junior high School  number 1  located close to market, Senior High School number 2  located in hilly environment, and Senior High School number 1 located between hill and beach. The total of sample is 216 students and 216 students’ parents. The data were taken by using observation, questioneer and interview. The result of this research is the environment does not affect the students learning style in studying English since most of the students in 3 areas use common sense.

Abstract

Speaking is one of the activities conducted by human everyday. In speaking, the sentences can be simple sentences and even complex sentences. Sometimes, in speaking the words and phrases are used to fill a syntactic position without having a meaning or referent. It is called expletive. The research analyzes the form and function of expletive in utterances of kubang society. The data were collected through interviews and recording technique and the theory used from Azar and Manser. The data were presented in written form. The research shows that there are fiften expletive words used by Kubang society in conversation. Expletive often appears in adverb. Though, it is only a filler, expletive words are often used by Kubang society.

Abstract

One of the procedures conducted by a translator is text analysis. It is aimed to find out the text type of the source text. Traditionally, a text type is determined by the topic, form, and the language used. However, it does not applicable to a text like science-fiction text. It is difficult for the translator to decide the text type. Therefore, Reiss (1971) gave the solution by determining the text type from its function. There are three types of text proposed by Reiss; they are informative, expressive, and operative.  Although a text may have more than one function, the translator just needs to see which function dominated the text. Text type is the important basic for the translator before producing a target text. He may produce the same or even different texts type depending on his translation purpose.

Abstract

Many people think that it is difficult to speak grammatically correct since grammar has so many rules. However, in the concept of public speaking, grammar can be used to avoid mistakes and misunderstanding, so that, the messages are delivered correctly and the targets are reached purposely. Here, the writer divides the discussion of the grammar usage into two categories; they are the function of grammar in public speaking and the grammar awareness in public speaking. In addition, it is hoped that the readers consider to pay more attention toward the grammar before saying something, especially speaking in a public speaking context.

Abstract

The concept of autonomous  learning  has gained massive attention  in educational  research  and practice  over the last three decades. This concept is regarded as an option in this modern educational  world (Scharle & Szabo, 2000) which demands more active participation and less teacher-  dependence of learners.  In the area  of language  learning,  many researchers have put attention  to this concept in order  to get more understanding of the theory  and  practice.  Two approaches are  commonly used by researchers in this autonomous  learning  matter  are qualitative  and quantitative. These two approaches are discussed in this paper in order to get good comparison  of advantages  and  weaknesses to be used for research  in autonomous  learning  area.  A mix approach or a combination approach between  qualitative   and  quantitative is also  discussed  in  this  paper  to  get  more  ideas  and  understanding about  the alternative way of conducting the research  in this area.
