Abstract

The research aims at improving the vocabulary mastery of students at Padang’s State Polytechnics for the 2015/2016 academic year by applying a blended learning model. Blended learning is an interactive learning model which combines face-to-face  with web-based learning. Vocabulary is a vital sub-skill in mastering a language and thus a suitable topic for a classroom action research (CAR). . The CAR theory applied is by Kemmis, S and McTaggart (2005) and the Blended Learning theory used is by Bersin (2004). The instruments are test, observation, field note and interview. Quantitative data are collected by a test result in which it is used to see how the student’s vocabulary mastery progresses after applying the blended learning model. Qualitative data gathered included observation, field note and interview analyzed descriptively in order to find out the factors affecting student’s vocabulary mastery by implementing blended

Abstract

Speaking is one of the activities conducted by human everyday. In speaking, the sentences can be simple sentences and even complex sentences. Sometimes, in speaking the words and phrases are used to fill a syntactic position without having a meaning or referent. It is called expletive. The research analyzes the form and function of expletive in utterances of kubang society. The data were collected through interviews and recording technique and the theory used from Azar and Manser. The data were presented in written form. The research shows that there are fiften expletive words used by Kubang society in conversation. Expletive often appears in adverb. Though, it is only a filler, expletive words are often used by Kubang society.

Abstract

Language is a medium of communication and it is also dynamic. Language also is also influenced by internal and external factors. Internal factors are like the users or the human, while the external factors are like the media, globalization era, etc. These causethe language becomes death. The writer focuses on analyzing the language death in Tanah Sirah, Lubuk Begalung sub-district, Padang.The writer collected the data trough note taking and interview. The theories used are from Mcmahon, Campbell and Muntzell. The result shows that noun is the part of speech included as language death. The part of speech that never occurs as language death is adverb and verb.The dominant of the cause of language death is because the things itself had disappeared from the society.

Abstract

Kegiatan PKM ini bertujuan memberikan pengetahuan dan skill tentang pengajaran berbasis E-Learning dengan menggunakan LMS (Learning Management System) bagi sekolah dasar di kota Padang, yaitu SDN 01 Sawahan. Sebelum kegiatan PKM ini, sekolah mitra melaksanakan PBM daring hanya dengan menggunakan aplikasi Whatsapp. Dalam kegiatan pelatihan ini, bagaimana membuat kelas virtual, memasukkan materi pelajaran, dan bagaimana memberikan tugas dengan menggunakan GC adalah beberapa skill yang diajarkan kepada guru sekolah mitra. Selain itu, guru juga diajarkan bagaimana memaksimalkan penggunaan GC dengan menggunakan android smartphone (telepon pintar). Beberapa fitur penting seperti penggunaan google drive juga diajarkan dalam pelatihan ini. Tim PKM berharap setelah kegiatan ini berlangsung, guru sekolah mitra dan peserta didiknya dapat melaksanakan pembelajaran jarak jauh yang lebih baik dan efektif serta efisien dengan memanfaatkan GC ini.

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat (PKM) yang diadakan oleh tim PKM dari Jurusan Bahasa Inggris, Politeknik Negeri Padang (PNP), ini bertujuan untuk memberikan pengetahuan dan pelatihan kepada guru Bahasa Inggris di lingkungan Musyawarah Guru Mata Pelajaran (MGMP) Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan (SMK) Kota Padang tentang pembelajaran Bahasa berbasis pemanfaatan kemajuan tekhnologi. Tim PKM memberikan pelatihan pemanfaatan aplikasi dalam jaringan (daring) yakni Kahoot dan Quizziz untuk pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris di tingkat SMK. Pelatihan diadakan selama 32 jam secara daring karena adanya pembatasan kegiatan terkait pandemi Covid-19 di Kota Padang. Dalam kegiatan ini peserta dilatih untuk mampu membuat akun Kahoot dan Quizziz, merancang kuis dan bantuan visual untuk kegiatan belajar mengajar, menerapkan penggunaan Kahoot dan Quizziz untuk siswa, serta menngunduh hasil kerja siswa sehingga memudahkan para pengajar dalam proses penilaian kuis dan pembelajaran. Dengan adanya kegiatan pelatihan ini, diharapkan para guru mampu memanfaatkan teknologi dalam kegiatan pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris, khususnya Kahoot dan Quizziz untuk membuat peserta tertarik dan memberikan variasi belajar daring maupun tatap muka di masa yang akan datang.

Abstract

This research aims at observing and investigating the Seven Standards of Textuality in the Students’ English Written Texts. The methodology used was qualitative case study research. The setting was at Islamic Senior High School Students (MAN) Lembah Melintang whereas; the research participants were Islamic Senior High School “Excel” Students. The number of the research participants was 35. The research finding indicates that the students were frequent to produce the textuality errors in their English written texts. The number of errors of cohesion (substitution: 60, ellipsis: 28, reference: 50, conjunction: 78 and lexical cohesion: 156 times) was 372 times, of coherence (additional ideas: 34, contrary: 21, and summary: 35 times, whereas; the cause-effect relationship and example/specific meaning were not found or produced) was 90 times. The textuality error were mainly caused by interference or language transfer and interlanguage. In conclusion, the students have not been able to produce cohesion and coherence to achieve well-organized ideas in their English written texts. Meanwhile the other five standards of textuality were fair to concern and reasonably related. Interference or language transfer and interlanguage were the root of the problem in achieving well-established text’s standards of textuality

Abstract

It is an essential factor that using a suitable learning model will enhance the learning outcomes for students. Project Based Learning (PJBL) is cosidered one of the learning model that guide the student to study inside the classroom and on the industrial world. The students learn theoritically and practically. This research was to find out the strength and weakness of PJBL during teaching and learning inside and outside of the classroom. It used qualitative research by using descriptive design. Data were collected by using interview question using semi structure interview and documentation. Data were analyzed by using theory of Miles & Huberman and Mc Carthy about discourse analysis. There were 71 students becoming the sample of the research from Politeknik Negeri Padang. After conducting the research, it is found some strengths and weaknesses of the PJBL for teaching and learning. PJBL. The strengths are for example: improving the student motivation, making the student to be diligent and challenging, being able to solve the problem, increasing the student collaboration and cooperation, teaching the student to make decision and conceptual framework, and how to work on the field. For the weakness are for example: taking much time and money, difficult to collect the information and best decision, do not make all student creative and innovative, and needing sufficient facilities and technologies to do the project.

Abstract

Kampung Tematik dan Edukasi Eco Enzyme yang berada di Kecamatan Padang Timur merupakan bagian dari kegiatan Bank Sampah Andalas Sepakat yang telah beroperasi semenjak tahun 2019. Sayangnya, keberadaan dari kampung tematik ini masih belum diketahui oleh masyarakat luas. Padahal kegiatan yang dilaksanakan kampung tematik ini beragam dalam hal meningkatkan kesejahteraan masyarakat, merubah perilaku masyarakat dengan diversifikasi pengolahan sampah, dengan konsep reduce, reuse dan recycle. Untuk itu, kegiatan pengabdian yang dilakukan adalah pembuatan video profil dari kampung tematik ini untuk memberi informasi menarik dan gambaran secara lengkap mengenai detail kampung tematik, secara kreatif dan inovatif, yang diunggah ke media-media sosial mereka. Ada tiga tahapan yang dilakukan untuk menghasilkan video profil bagi kampung tematik ini, yang dimulai dengan pre-production, production, dan post-production. Hasil yang diperoleh adalah video profil berdurasi 7 menit 35 detik, yang secara signifikan membantu menaikkan eksistensi kampung tematik ini di masyarakat luas, tidak hanya di Kota Padang.

Abstract

Vocational universities play a crucial role in shaping a workforce that is well-prepared for the demands of various industries. They Integrate local wisdom into English teaching and learning brings cultural relevance and a deeper sense of identity to students’ educational experiences. This research aimed at to find out the lecturers and student point of view about the implementation of local wisdom-based English teaching and learning in vocational universities. The research question was how the implement of local wisdom-based English teaching and learning in vocational universities from lecturers and students point of view. It used a descriptive qualitative research by using content analysis. Data were collected by using interview method using validated interview questions. It also was analyzed by using content analysis and social discourse of critical discourse analysis from Fairclough. It shows that there are several lecturers and student perception about implementation of local wisdom-based English teaching and learning in vocational universities such as motivation for students, impact on language proficiency, enhanced student engagement, tailored teaching strategies, challenging in standardization, relevance to local context, facilitating cross-cultural understanding, cultural preservation, community development and professional development.  There are some significances of the research. For the lecturers, this research can give a new paradigm or best practices on how to do the English teaching and learning in vocational universities. For the students, this research can give a new learning process for English learning. At last, for the government, this research can be considered to be policies in education in English teaching and learning.
