Abstract

This study discusses how a phenomenon can affect civilization and the outlook on society. Prediction is so important to uncover major events that have occurred at a certain period or period. Forecast defined as attempts to acquire knowledge through occult ways or using certain rituals.   Said forecaster derived from Arabic which means a science Raml for interpreting, judging, see and predict the fate of someone in the future. Activities divination fortune-telling in the novel Sabdo Palon Pudarnya Surya Majapahit by Dhamar Shashangka refers to signs/phenomena that come from nature itself, namely with the emergence of a red lunar eclipse (blood moon) lunar eclipse, Chandra Kartika, earthquake, and head of the earth at Majapahit sky. The conclusions from this study indicate that predictions are so important to answer someone's curiosity and curiosity about things that are beyond the limits of ordinary human abilities and to reveal it all also requires help from someone who has extraordinary abilities and knowledge of the prophecy itself. In this novel, the translator is focused on the figure of Sabdo Palon

Abstract

This article aims to analyse the aggression that is done by the tributes of the hunger games; they are Katniss, Peeta, Cato, Clove, Glimmer, and Thresh. The writer focuses on pointing out two topics, firstly the depiction of aggression in Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games, secondly the reason of aggression happened as depicted in Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games. The method used in this article is the concept of aggression by several experts to depict the aggression that is done by the tributes in the hunger games and the psychological approach of death instinct by Sigmund Freud and also the concept of aggression by Anderson & Bushman to find out the situational factors on the action of the aggression. The majority of the factors behind the action of aggression is following by the death instinct for destruction and the aggression is also because of the situational factors, such as aggressive cues, provocation, frustration, pain and discomfort, incentives, and drugs.Keywords: Aggression; death instinct; situational factors.

Abstract

This paper discusses the foods eaten by the slaves from Uncle Tom’s Cabin about the nature of slavery that happens in South America. There are two contrast setting of places in the novel—Kentucky and Louisiana—that each has different food presentations for the slaves, and each presentation can reveal the power relation between masters and slaves. In gastronomy, when food is done right in writing, certain scenes from fiction can get the readers to experience it with all their senses and strange cravings. The finding in this writing is that the slaves creatively change the scraps and leftovers into finely soul foods of in the first set of the place, Kentucky. The second setting is a place in Louisiana, the slaves cannot have the soul food because the lack of food itself has chained them forever in the slavery. Each of this food presentations has directly revealed the nature of power relation between masters and slaves.

Abstract

Speed, cost, and quality have been the central issues in the translation industry. While computers can offer fast and economical translation, their ability to produce accurate translation at a publishable level like human translators may do is still questionable. In the present study, the author linguistically evaluated the accuracy of English to Indonesian translation generated by Google Translate. Freely accessible English texts of various types were chosen to heuristically exemplify the units of analysis. The results of analysis lead to the conclusion that although Google’s Neural Machine Translation system is quite an improvement to the conventional phrase-based translation system, highly accurate translation does not seem to be achieved by Google Translate in the near future.

Abstract

Good writing is one that is cohesive especially in terms of reference. Cohesive is one of the essential textual components to create the organized and comprehensiveness of the texts. This study aims to investigate cohesion in six journal introduction sections written by post-graduate students at Semarang State University, West Java, Indonesia. This study used discourse analysis as an approach to analyzing grammatical cohesive devices. six journal introduction sections were chosen based on purposive sampling. The journal introduction sections were analyzed using Halliday and Matthiessen (2014) theory that contributing to the cohesion of the text, namely cohesive devices. The results of this study showed that post-graduate students at Semarang State University tend to use demonstrative references more frequently than the other grammatical cohesive devices. From 393 occurrences of grammatical cohesive devices presented in the six journal introduction sections, 322 of them were in the form of demonstrative reference. Through this article, the writer wants to help un English post-graduate students to have a better understanding of making introduction sections in their journal article.
