Abstract

Students' critical thinking skills in mathematics learning remain relatively low due to the dominance of conventional teaching that focuses on procedures and single correct answers. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of open-ended mathematical problems in improving students' critical thinking skills, describe their implementation, and identify factors influencing their success. The method employed is a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) examining 22 selected articles obtained through searches on Google Scholar, ERIC, and Semantic Scholar databases, supplemented by manual reference searching, from a total of 212 identified articles. The article selection process was carried out using the identification, screening, eligibility, and inclusion stages based on the PRISMA guidelines, applying predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria within the publication range of 2016–2026. The results indicate that the use of open-ended mathematical problems is effective in enhancing students' critical thinking skills, evidenced by improvements in analysis, evaluation, and decision-making abilities, with a high effect size of 1.44. Implementation is carried out through stages of problem presentation, strategy exploration, discussion, and student-centered reflection. The success of this approach is influenced by problem quality, teacher competence, student engagement, and a supportive learning environment. Therefore, open-ended mathematical problems can serve as an effective alternative learning strategy to develop students' critical thinking skills.

Abstract

This study aims to determine teachers’ readiness in implementing diagnostic assessment in mathematics learning at SMP Negeri 4 Tondano. This research employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. The subjects of the study consisted of three mathematics teachers who had implemented diagnostic assessment in their teaching. Data collection techniques included in-depth interviews, classroom observations, and documentation of diagnostic assessment instruments and blueprints. The data were then analyzed using the interactive data analysis model by Miles and Huberman, which involves data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. To ensure data validity, source and technique triangulation were applied. The results showed that teachers’ readiness falls into the sufficient category. Two teachers (Mathematics Teacher 1 and Mathematics Teacher 2) have understood the concept, developed instruments, implemented, and evaluated diagnostic assessment well, although there are still challenges related to students’ readiness. Meanwhile, one teacher (Mathematics Teacher 3) has not implemented diagnostic assessment formally. The instruments developed include test blueprints and cognitive test items; however, they do not yet fully cover non-cognitive assessment components and comprehensive evaluation instruments

Abstract

This study is motivated by the importance of higher order thinking skills (HOTS) and computational thinking (CT) in 21st-century mathematics education, as well as the affective factor of mathematics anxiety that may influence these abilities. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between mathematics anxiety and computational thinking skills, and to analyze the role of HOTS within this relationship through a systematic literature review (SLR) approach. The method follows the PRISMA model, including identification, screening, eligibility assessment, and data synthesis stages, involving 15 articles indexed in Scopus and Sinta, retrieved from Google Scholar (6 Scopus-indexed and 9 Sinta 1-4 indexed articles) published between 2021 and 2026. The findings indicate that most studies show a negative relationship between mathematics anxiety and CT, where increased anxiety is associated with lower computational thinking ability. However, this relationship is contextual and influenced by technology-based and innovative learning interventions. Furthermore, CT acts as a mediating variable that can reduce the negative impact of anxiety on learning outcomes, while HOTS functions as a cognitive framework linking affective and cognitive aspects. These findings highlight the importance of integrating CT and HOTS in mathematics learning to enhance students’ thinking quality while minimizing mathematics anxiety.

Abstract

This study aims to uncover the concept of ethnomathematics in the practice of distance and time estimation in the fishing activities of Bugis fishermen on the coast of Cempae, Parepare City. The study used a qualitative approach with ethnographic methods. Data were obtained through participatory observation and in-depth interviews with three informants, then analyzed using the Spradley model which includes domain analysis, taxonomy, components, and cultural themes. The results show that fishermen utilize local knowledge in determining direction, distance, and time through natural signs such as islands, seabirds, water color, and the position of the sun (lettu esso ri ulunna). Four main domains were found, namely determining position using islands and seabirds as directional references, determining distance based on fishing experience, determining time through the position of the sun and weather conditions, and observing marine environmental conditions through water color and ocean currents. These four domains are interrelated in supporting fishermen's fishing activities. The cultural theme reveals the integration of local knowledge with mathematical concepts through measuring, counting, locating, and designing activities. The estimation carried out by fishermen remains relevant because it is contextual and adaptive.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the influence of social media usage intensity and emotional intelligence on students’ mathematics achievement at Walisongo Junior High School. The social media platforms examined were TikTok and Instagram. This study employed survey and documentation methods as part of a quantitative approach. The population of this study consisted of all 51 students at Walisongo Junior High School. The social media usage intensity and emotional intelligence were measured using a questionnaire, while students’ mathematics achievement was measured based on odd semester final exam results. Data analysis was conducted using multiple linear regression analysis, but prior to this, normality and linearity tests were performed. The results of the data analysis yielded a Simultaneous Test (F-Test) with a significance level of 0.151 > 0.05, therefore, it can be concluded that H0 is accepted and H1 is rejected, meaning that there is no significant simultaneous influence of social media usage intensity (X1) and emotional intelligence (X2) on students’ mathematics achievement (Y) at Walisongo Junior High School. Thus, this study concludes that the variables of social media usage intensity and emotional intelligence do not have a significant influence, either partially or simultaneously, on students’ mathematics achievement

Abstract

The advancement of electronic systems necessitates modernization in mathematics learning to render it increasingly collaborative and aligned with scholars’ requirements. In execution, learning regarding the material of similarity and congruence at the junior high school tier continues encountering numerous obstacles, especially concerning pupils’ restricted theoretical grasp and the inefficient utilization of electronic learning media. This study aims to develop an e-module based on the Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) approach on similarity and congruence material that meets validity criteria as a learning resource. This investigation utilized a Research and Development (R&D) strategy employing the 4D framework, which was performed until the define, design, and develop phases. Evidence was gathered through verification forms finalized by media specialists and material authorities. The findings demonstrated that the e-module achieved a mean rating of 3.88 from media experts and 3.69 from material experts using a 1-4 scale, with an overall mean score of 3.78, which was categorized as highly valid. These outcomes signify that the produced e-module satisfies the viability benchmarks for application in learning. The produced e-module is anticipated to assist pupils in comprehending principles via dynamic learning exercises unified with the societal background of Nyadran. Subsequent exploration is advocated to scrutinize the usability and efficacy of the e-module within class execution.
