Abstract

When introduced into English as a Second Language (ESL) reading classrooms, it has the potential to assist students in becoming more immersed in the language. The complex melodies and emotionally charged compositions characteristic of classical music have the potential to produce an atmosphere better suited to the comprehension of language in ESL reading classrooms. This mixed-method study that involved 33 students from one university in Indonesia was aimed to (1) investigate the significant difference between the mean scores of the pretest and the posttest in ESL reading using classical music and (2) describe the students' reflections on using classical music in the reading classroom. This study used pretest-posttest and students' reflection sheets as data collection instruments. The pretest and posttest results indicated that classical music significantly improved students' reading skills in ESL classrooms. The written reflections showed students were highly motivated to join the reading activity, as classical music was beneficial for enhancing students' mood and concentration, affecting their comprehension, vocabulary collection, and cognitive skills. Keywords: learning experiences, classical music, ESL reading, psycholinguistics

Abstract

Finland’s prime minister election result is out, impacting a huge shock in European politics. This study examines The Guardian's coverage of the Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin's loss in the recent election, utilizing Ruth Wodak's approach to Critical Discourse Analysis. The study aims to uncover underlying ideologies, power relations, and potential critiques in The Guardian's coverage. The article analyzes The Guardian's April 4th, 2023, publication titled "Why did Sanna Marin lose Finland's election?" and discusses the reasons behind Marin's defeat. The article frames Marin's loss as a "shock," suggesting potential flaws in the electoral system or an unfair outcome. The article discusses various factors that led to Marin's defeat, such as her approach to the economy, foreign policy, and immigration, highlighting their potential impact on voter behavior. Additionally, the article suggests that Marin's loss may indicate a shift towards more conservative values in Finnish society, highlighting a rise in anti-immigration sentiment and a focus on economic issues. The study also considers power relations in the coverage, highlighting the opposition's successful framing of Marin as an out-of-touch elite, which may have played a significant role in swaying voters. However, the study notes that this approach only examined a single source. Further research involving multiple media sources and a mixed investigative lens is necessary to understand discursive issues comprehensively. Keywords: Finland’s Election, Sanna Marin, Discourse Historical Approach, The Guardian

Abstract

A growing body of literature has discussed need analysis in a certain domain. The issue raised since English to Young Learners was important to support the process of language learning in the classroom. The present study was employed to investigate student's need analysis, especially for the teaching of English to young learners in the elementary school level. The data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and analyzing the documents of sample students. Questionnaires were distributed to 25 students of grade 5A and 5B, and interviews were conducted with an English teacher of grade 5 at an elementary school in Jakarta. The findings revealed that the students were expected to master language skills so that they could be more confident in reading and writing. Furthermore, they also have several preferable topics to be discussed in the learning process such as family and friends, foods, or meals. They prefer to have topics that could be related to their daily life and their background knowledge. Moreover, there are several factors that may hinder the teaching of reading and writing. The irrelevant topics to their daily life and interest, lack of vocabulary knowledge, and anxiety in writing were the factors that made them hard to read and write. Therefore, the development of class materials needed to be relevant to students' needs. Keywords: Need Analysis, English to Young Learners, Learning Materials

Abstract

Studies on facial expressions have been looked into from a variety of angles in earlier research. A prior study (Feng O'Halloran, 2012) examined how comic cartoons' facial expressions changed over time. There are, however, very few studies that concentrate on comic books as opposed to student facial expressions. The purpose of this study is to identify the facial expressions made by students as they learn English in a classroom setting. One student selected and recorded facial expressions during the teaching and learning process. The most frequently occurring portions of facial expressions are chopped out of a movie frame by frame in order to collect data. Then, using Martinec's framework (Martinec, 2001), all data are examined to determine the interpersonal meanings of the students' facial expressions. Facial expressions during the teaching and learning process are made an accomplishment for students as a result of this research's total contribution. Students' efforts to achieve their goals during the teaching and learning process are demonstrated by their passion, which is successfully created by the teacher through facial expressions. Keywords: ELL Classroom; Interpersonal meaning; Students’ facial expression.

Abstract

Language is a crucial component of communication and serves as the foundation for interactions. In linguistics, there is a branch called pragmatics that studies speech acts. Pragmatics provides a framework for analyzing the relationship between language and context. Related to pragmatics, this research explores the classifications of speech acts in the film "Good Will Hunting (1997)”. This research aims to analyze the type of speech acts, as proposed by Searle (1976), that can be found in conversations between the characters Will Hunting and Sean Maguire. The film offers a narrative canvas to investigate representatives, directives, commissives, expressives, and declaratives. A descriptive qualitative method was employed in this research. The data was collected by employing attentive listening and note-taking methods and analyzed using descriptive and interpretative techniques. The findings of this research reveal a total of 61 speech acts, with representatives being the most dominant type with a total of 43 speeches, followed by directives totaling 8 speeches, 6 expressives, and both commissives and declaratives totaling 2 speeches each. The implications of these findings extend to a nuanced understanding of interpersonal communication in cinematic contexts. Keywords : pragmatics, speech acts, illocutionary acts

Abstract

Teacher identity is one of the essential aspects influencing the form and quality of educational processes. The present study examines the narratives of one of the writers, Devia, and an English teacher, Trisa, throughout their learning and teaching experiences and the process that were involved as they negotiated their identities as teachers. The data were collected from an autobiographical narrative of Devia as an English teacher, as well as intensive life-history interviews with Trisa. Analysis of the narratives and interview data led to four major themes: inspiring figures, teaching practicum experiences, becoming an English teacher, and pursuing a postgraduate study. The findings revealed that Devia’s and Trisa’s engagement in the practices and activities of learning and teaching shaped their teacher identity constructions. Keywords: narrative inquiry, teacher identity, teacher identity construction
