Abstract

ABSTRACTThe aims of this research were to find out the correlation between students’ listening habit to English song and their vocabulary mastery. This research applied correlational study which was used quantitative design. The subjects were 60 students of Third Grade Students of SMPN 06 Kota Bengkulu. The data were collected from two instruments: (1) questionnaire was used to get data about students’ listening habit to English song and (2) VLT test was used to get data about students’ vocabulary mastery. The result of calculation was using Pearson Product moment formula process by SPSS IBM Statistic Version 20 Program, which showed the score of  rxy bigger than the score of r table (0,835 > 0,254). It means that Ha was accepted and H0 was rejected. In conclusions, there is a positive and significant correlation between listening habit to English song and vocabulary mastery of third grade students of SMPN 06 Kota Bengkulu.

Abstract

This research aimed at investigating taboo words in Rich Brian’s song lyrics. The researcher described what kinds, functions, and meanings of taboo words used in Rich Brian’s song lyrics. The sample of this research was five Rich Brian’s song lyrics that collected by using simple random sampling. The researcher employed a theory from Batistella to describe the kinds of taboo words and a theory from Wardhaugh to describe the functions of taboo words. Then, in finding the meaning of taboo words in Rich Brian’s song lyrics the researcher employed some dictionaries, internet and article as well to support the data. In addition, this research was completed assisted by co-researcher. The result showed that there were 89 taboo words found in those five song lyrics where obscenity was the highest kind of taboo words which mentioned 49 times (45%) and profanity was the least which mentioned 6 times (7%). Then, in functions of taboo words showing contempt became the commonly used while mocking authority became the least used. Furthermore, according to the sociolinguistic point of view this kind of music surely is not Indonesian culture but it is more to western culture where many rapper come from there and it usually spoken by specific class of people.

Abstract

The objectives of the study are to describe the textbooks used by English teachers at present and its quality for Office Administration program; to explain to what extend do the teachers and the students need of ESP-Content based English materials in their English textbook and  to describeEnglish skills and the material of ESP for Office Administration students. To get the data for the study, two sets of questionnaire were used. First was questionnaire for teacher, second questionnaire for students. The steps for analyzing the data were (1) Selecting the data from the result of the questionnaire ,(2) Identifying the data about student’s need in the ESP material and the English textbook, (3) Classifying the data from the teacher and student’s answer,(4) Calculating percentage of answers in the questionnaire,(5) Making conclusion.The result of the study shows that  teacher used two English textbooks in teaching English. The English textbooks have a good quality, in term of the learners’ activities, the picture and illustration. However the material in the textbook was not appropriate with the student need in Office Administration Program. The students and the teacher need English textbook which contains with the ESP. The English textbook should contain the items based the students need and theEnglish skill needed by the students in Office Administration Program.

Abstract

This study deals with the use of WhatsApp voice note in speaking class. This study aimed at figuring out the teacher’s way in implementing WhatsApp voice note in teaching speaking on narrative text and investigating the perspective on WhatsApp voice note to improve speaking skill on narrative text. In conducting this study, the researcher used qualitative approach. Case study was applied as a research design in this study. This study involved 35 students of the tenth grade (X MIPA 1) and one English teacher. Instruments used in this study were classroom observation, interview, and questionnaire. The results of this study showed that nine steps were used by the teacher in the teaching and learning process through WhatsApp voice note in speaking class on narrative text. Meanwhile, most of the students gave their positive response toward the teaching and learning process. The teacher argued that WhatsApp voice note is a useful tool to provide the students opportunities to speak especially on narrative text and the students can share information easily. It also allows the students asking for help using English. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that learning to speak English using WhatsApp voice note is an attractive learning activity, positive activity, and WhatsApp voice note is easy to use. Finally, this study suggests other researchers to involve the objective data, to enrich the instrumentation, to add more sample of the study and to employ other methods and design in order to enrich the data.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out whether or not there is a significant effect using guided question technique on students’ writing ability in descriptive text. This research is a quasi experimental design. The population of this research is the seventh grade students at SMPN 3 Kota Bengkulu. The sample in this research are about 60 students divided into 2 classes, VII 2 consists of 30 students as the experimental group and VII 3 that consist of 30 students as the control group. The treatment is given only for the experimental group. The data are collected by using two writing tests: pre-test and post-test. The result of the research showed the mean score of experimental group (31.34) was higher than mean score of control group (23.35). This indicated that the guided question technique could give a significant positive effect to the students’ writing ability in descriptive text.

Abstract

The aims of the study are mainly to know the students’ difficulties in speaking, and to know the strategy used by teacher to overcome the speaking problems.The participants of the study were 36 students of the tenth grade of SMK N 2 Purworejo.The instruments used in this research were questionnaire, interview and documentation. After getting the data, the writer analyzed them to determine category of students’ speaking skill, students’ speaking difficulties and teacher strategies.The result of the study shows that the mean score of students skill in speaking is 64.8. It belongs to sufficient category. The students’ speaking difficulties covered linguistic and non linguistics problems. The linguistic problems include lack of vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar knowledge, while non linguistic problems, namely inhibition, nothing to say, uneven participant, mother tounge interference,anxiety, shyness, lack of self confident and low motivation.  To solve the problems, the teacher has strategies such as drilling, brainstorming, role playing and giving the students motivation.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out whether there is any effect of peer feedback through instagram on student’s writing recount text at the tenth grade students of SMA 4 Rejang Lebong. Quasi-experimental design, since two classes are taken as the sample of the study with 36 students X IPA 1 and 34 students X IPA 3. Which class experimental class and a controlled class. The experimental class is taught by doing peer feedback through instagram while the controlled class do not. Moreover, this research is conducted through the following procedures; pretest, treatments, and post-test. The data analyzed is gained through writing test. There was significant different between the students who taught by peer feedback through instagram and those who were taught by conventional teaching. It can be seen from the post-test result. The mean score in experimen class was 75,67 and the mean score in control class was 67,38. From the result of t tesr was obtained 3,03 while t table was 1,67. It was proved that t test obtained was higher than t table (3,03>1,67) which the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected and the hypothesis (H1) is accepted. Finally, it can be concluded that peer feedback through instagram is effective toward students’ writing ability in Recount text.

Abstract

This article reports on students' and teachers’ perceptions and of their self-efficacy on implementing blended learning in writing class. Self-efficacy has been defined as the belief we have in our own abilities, specifically our ability to meet the challenges and complete a task successfully (Akhtar, 2008).This research employed a survey study by means of questionnaire and interview. Fifty one of the third year students of English Department Galuh University were employed as participants. The result of this research showed that students’ self-efficacy improved after learning in writing classes on implementing blended learning, the students felt confident, enjoy the class, and then the students felt more motivated when learning. Furthermore, most of the students stated that self-efficacy was necessary, because it affected not only on implementing blended learning in writing class but also in the other courses. Each student has different self-efficacy, high and low self-efficacy that is able to influence how their learning achievement. it is recommended to further research that self-efficacy measurements must be far better and more accurate from various aspects. Thus the results would be certainly more relevant and detailed.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out the classroom management strategies implemented by the English teachers and the reason in applying the most often strategy than others strategies. This study employed the descriptive qualitative method, the subject of the research were the English teachers (2 persons) at SMAN 2 Kota Bengkulu.. The data was collected by using observations checklist and interview. The result of the research revealed there are 5 strategies used by the teachers in managing the classroom; 1) Strategies to arrange the classroom, 2) Strategies to build positive relation with the student, 3) Strategies to create positive classroom environment, 4) Strategies to prevent misbehavior and5)   Strategies to handle the students’ discipline situation. In 5 meetings the total aspects of the first strategy applied by the teacher 1 and teacher 2 was about 33 and 37. The second strategy was 30 and 31. The third strategy was 26 and 24. The fourth strategy was 25 and 28. The last strategy was 25 and 24. Furthermore, the reasons of why the teachers applying the most often strategy than others strategies because it helps the teachers in the teaching and learning process to be more conducive. Beside that the strategies also help the teachers to create an effective teaching and learning process. Therefore, it could be concluded that the English teachers of SMAN 2 Kota Bengkulu used all the 5 strategies asmentioned by Marzano (2003) in managing classroom but not all aspects they used in teaching and learning process. The dominant strategy implemented by Teacher I and Teacher 2 were strategy to arrange the classroom. Meanwhile, the least strategy implemented by both teachers were the strategy to handle the students discipline situation.

Abstract

The aims of this research were to find out how cultural dimensions were displayed, what culture was the most dominant, and the percentage of local culture in textbooks used at SMA IT IQRA? (Pathway to English) and SMK N1 Grade X (Bahasa Inggris by KEMENDIKBUD) Bengkulu. This research applied content analysis study with descriptive qualitative analysis. The procedures used in data collection were document review and observation. In analysing the data, the concept by Mile and Huberman was applied. The study revealed that from the two textbooks, there was a difference in terms of dominance in cultural types and dimensions. In Pathway to English, there was38 % items of aesthetic sense, 32% of pragmatic sense, and 26% of sociological sense. Semantic sense had the least representation which was only 4%. In cultural types, there was (50%) for target culture, 44% for local culture, and 6% for international culture. As for Bahasa Inggris by KEMENDIKBUD, there was 44% for asthetic sense, 25% for sociological sense, 22% for aesthetic sense, and 8% for semantic sense. Local culture has most items to occur, which reached 47 percent, followed by target culture which was 41%. The last is international culture with 11% of occurrence. It is highly recommendable that teachers apply the books with more cultural dimensions and types to hep students broaden their cultural knowledge and awareness.
