Abstract

This research aims to investigate the students’ English competence, the highest percentage of students’ mistake and their difficulties in responding to the TOEFL structure and written expression sections. All of the 6th semester students of the English Education Study Program of Universitas Bengkulu who had passed all structure courses were involved in this research. The data were collected through a TOEFL test and an interview. The results show that majority of the students’ English competence was poor. It also reveals that the most difficult topic in grammar section was redundancy. There were two factors that affected the students’ performance in redundancy, ambiguity and the interference of first language. In contrast, gerund and infinitives were the easiest topic in grammar section. Simple rules and the most common expression were contributed to the students’ performance in gerund and infinitives. In responding to structure and written expression section there were four factors that influenced students’ difficulties, poor understanding of grammar, less focus, lack of practice and limited vocabulary.

Abstract

The objectives of this research was to know  students’ perception toward English Zone at English Study Program of IAIN Curup. The study is a descriptive research presented quantitativelly. The population of this research all students in all semester at English Study Program by using random sampling, total of the student was 37 students. From the population the researcher take students’ from second, fourth, sixth, and eighth semester because they are studying at English Zone. Data were collected through questionnaire. The data were analiyzed by using tabulating and making percentage. There were two indicators, difficulties and benefits of using English in English Zone. The first indicator, from 9 statements got 5 negative perception and 4 positive perception with total 49,48 percentages. Furthermore, the second indicator got 0 negative perception and 7 positive perception with total 50,52 percentages. The result shows that the majority of students’ perception was in positive category toward English Zone. In conclusion students’ perception toward English zone is positive perception to increase their ability in English. However, there are students’ problems using English cause by several factors. There are inhibition, nothing to say, low or uneven participation, and mother tongue use.

Abstract

This article focuses on describing the implementation of mind mapping technique to increase students’ motivation in writing descriptive text. An English teacher and 36 students in a Junior high school in Brebes participated in this study. A qualitative design was used, and data were collected through classroom observation, questionnaire and interview. This study found that the teacher did three steps in implementing mind mapping: giving students image of mind mapping, designing the writing task, and asking students to finish the writing task. Meanwhile, interview data indicated that most students enjoyed learning descriptive text by means of mind mapping. Regarding students’ motivation, data from observation revealed that most students enjoyed the activities, as seen from their enthusiasm. Likewise, questionnaire data indicated that most students gave positive perceptions towards the use of mind mapping. Most of them strongly agree with the statement that this strategy can make the learning process become imaginative. In short, it can be concluded that the teacher has successfully applied mind mapping technique. It can make the students enjoy and more interested in learning descriptive text. Therefore, the writers suggest that teachers apply various strategies in teaching and learning process, especially mind mapping, to create an enjoyable classroom atmosphere. Meanwhile, other researchers are recommended to discover the use of mind mapping in teaching other text types

Abstract

This research was aimed to find out the effect of TBL approach on the students’ listening comprehension. This research is a quasi-experimental which was conducted at SMAN 3 Kota Bengkulu in academic year of 2018/2019. The population of this research was the tenth grade students distributed in two classes with the total of 68 students. X- MIPA 1 as experimental group consisted of 34 students and X-MIPA II for control group consisted of 34 students. The instruments of this research was a listening test in the form essay and multiple choice consisted of 14 questions. Pre-test and post-test were conducted in both, experimental and control class. The finding of the result showed that the students taught by using TBL approach got higher score than those  taught without TBL approach. The result showed that there was a significant effect of  using TBL approach on the students’ achievement in listening comprehension which was proven by the result of analysis in independent sample t-test was < 0,05 . It means the alternative hypothesis was accepted. Based on the results and discussions at the research, it can be concluded that teaching and learning listening by using task-based learning approach has a positive effect on students’ listening comprehension. Some suggestions are proposed, Recommendation to teachers using Task-Based Learning Approach in english teaching and learning process because based on this research and previous research indicate the use of Task-Based Learning Approach give positive impact on english learning and The next researcher is recommended to using Task-Based Learning Approach in other English field like speaking and can be use in other method such as english classroom action research.

Abstract

Rumah Belajar Portal (RBP) is an alternative online media that was built by the Ministry of Education and culture (KEMDIKBUD) to provide content learning materials for teachers and students, RBP contains some feature but the researcher focused on Sumber Belajar and Kelas Maya feature.This researcher aimed to find out if the use of Rumah Belajar Portal could improve students’ reading comprehension abilities on descriptive text, to describe the students’ participations in the classroom activities, and to describe the students’ responses. The design was classroom action research, which was conducted in two cycles. The subject comprised the students at grade VII of SMPN 31 Bengkulu Tengah and consisted of 11 students. Qualitative and quantitative data were used. The instruments were reading comprehension test, observation checklist (field note) and interview. The result showed that RBP could improve the students’ abilities in reading descriptive text. The students who passed the minimum criterion of mastery (KKM passing grade ?70) improved from 18% in preliminary data to 45% at the end of cycle 1 and to 82% at the end of cycle 2. As for participation, the students were active and enthusiastic in asking and answering the question about the lesson in teaching and learning process. The students’ responses were positive. This shows that RBP was effective to be used in reading descriptive text.

Abstract

This thesis was aimed to find out teachers’ techniques in teaching English and teachers’ problems at Chariyatham Suksa Foundation School. This research was mixed- method which presented in descriptive way to describe it. Teachers from Indonesia who thought in secondary school are conducted informants or subject of this study and the last year students of secondary school of Chariyatham Suksa Foundation School are participants in this research. The researcher used observation, interview and questionnaire to get data that needed. In analysis data, first researcher identifies and checks data that be collected. After that, researcher describes all data that got. Next, researcher classifies data into categories based on research instrument and the last is interpret the data which gotten. The findings revealed that in teaching English. The teacher A used and implemented games, organizational, dialogue/narrative presentation and reading aloud techniques. Then teacher B used and implemented warm up, content explanation, brainstorming, checking, question-answer display technique. Meanwhile, teacher A got problem in lack of interest, lack of concentration in the class, lack of repetition and frequent practice of students, insufficient time, recourse and material and students is defiant, rowdy, or distracting of other. then teacher B got problem on lack of concentration in the class, lack of repetition and frequent practice of the students and Insufficient Time, Resource and Materials.

Abstract

This study deals with the students’ Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) in writing skill. This case study was aimed at figuring out the students use HOTS in writing, figuring out the kinds of the students’ HOTS in writing will be evident in writing, and figuring out the students’ responses on using HOTS in writing. The subject of this study was 21 students at the eleventh grade of a Senior High School in Banjar. Two research instruments used were the essay written test and the questionnaire. To assess the research instruments, the writer combined and synchronized the results by using triangulation analysis as adapted from Fraenkel et al. (2012, p. 559). The findings showed that Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) were used by the students in learning writing. The findings also showed that the kinds of the students’ HOTS were evident that they improved their writing without any treatment. The findings also showed that there were some benefits of using HOTS in writing according to the students’ responses.

Abstract

The type of this research is Descriptive Quantitative and Qualitative research. It is aimed to find out the motivation which make students in XII Social 6 choose English as an additional subject course and to find out the highest motivation which make students in XII Social 6 choose English as an additional subject course. The subject of this study is the students in class XII social 6 SMAN 1 Kota Bengkulu. In this research, the researcher collected the data by using questionnaire. Then, the data obtained from the questionnaires will be analyzed using SPSS program. The data concerning subjects’ general background as well as their comments will be calculated and presented in percentage. A Likert scale will be used to measure the level and type of subjects’ learning motivation. According to table that the researcher used to analyze extrinsic and intrinsic motivation of students in choosing English as additional subject, the researcher got the result that show the extrinsic motivation is the highest reason chosen by the students when they chose English as their additional subject course at school than intrinsic motivation. It can be seen from the calculation scores of students intrinsic and extrinsic motivation that showed the total of mean score for extrinsic motivation is 47.5 and the total mean score for intrinsic motivation is 46.62. There are several extrinsic motivation from the students, for example the students prepare to learn English because they want to continue the study or get the works, go abroad and want to try to communicate with the foreigner.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to find out the validity and reliability of a teacher-made test in SMAN 6 Bengkulu. This research was a descriptive quantitative research. The subject of this research was an English teacher-made test for eleventh grade students of SMAN 6 Bengkulu. There were 40 items of the test consist of 35 multiple choice items and 5 essay items. There were two research instruments used in this research, observation checklist and documentation. Based on the data analysis, it was found that the  percentage of the validity score was 60% or 0.60. It means that the test was valid but in the intermediate category. The r-obtained for reliability test was 0.62 and it was considered to be reliable but was in the intermediate level of reliability.  From the research finding, it can be concluded that the test was valid and reliable but both were in the intermediate category. It means that the test still need some revision and improvement in order to be a good, valid, and reliable test. Key Words : Validity, Reliability, Teacher-made test

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research was aimed to find out whether there is a correlation between students’ anxiety level and oral presentation’s performance in EFL speaking class. The population of this research was the 4th semester students in English Education Study Program of Bengkulu University class A, B and C with 51 students randomly chosen as the sample. The design of this research was descriptive quantitative with questionnaire and presentation test as the instruments. The questionnaire of this research was FLCAS (Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scales) by Horwitz (1986) meanwhile the presentation test was a presentation test rubric evaluated by two raters in order to find the reliability of the test. The result of this research showed that there was a significant negative correlation between students’ anxiety level and oral presentation test score from rater 1 and rater 2. Based on the result, the strength of this correlation was moderate. On the other hand, both of the results were in negative directions. The finding also showed that most of the students had “Mildly Anxious” level of anxiety and “Basic” category from presentation test score. It can be concluded that anxiety can influenced the students’ speaking skill especially while performing a presentation in front of the class. Some factors as like fear of making mistakes, being seen by a lot of people, or being interrupted by the lecturers can increase the students’ anxiety.
