Abstract

Jean Baudrillard is one among many prominent thinkers of postmodernism. One among many his notable idea is the Hyperreal In his book Simulacra and Simulation, Baudrillard’s proposes the idea of something that transcend beyond the state of fake and reality, the Hyperreal. This concept can be found as a theme in lyrics of a song titled Idol by Yoasobi. This paper try to dissect the lyrics and finding the implication of Baudrillard’s concept of Hyperreal within the implicit and explicit meanings of the lyrics. Idol is a certain profession that has gain significant rise in the 21th century. The common perception is that they are selling ‘fake identities’ to their audience. Nevertheless, the truth is more complicated than it is as with using Baudrillard’s theoretical framework of the Hyperreal, idol has cross the boundary of falsehood and authenticity and become ‘real’ in their own sense.   Keywords: Baurillard, Hyperreal, Simulation, Idol, Seality

Abstract

This study investigates the learning and reinforcement of gender roles throughout people's lives and the evolution of women's roles in Indonesia. By conducting a comparative analysis of two novels (Bumi Manusia by Pramoedya Ananta Toer and Antologi Rasa by Ika Natassa) the study explores the depictions of gender progression in Indonesian literature. Specifically, the analysis focuses on how gender roles and expectations have evolved between the era depicted in both literary works. In Bumi Manusia, women are depicted in traditional roles such as prostitutes, mistresses, wives, helpers, and teachers, whereas in Antologi Rasa, women hold positions as respectable as men, highlighting the progress of gender equality in present times. Additionally, the analysis examines the autonomy of the characters in terms of education, career, and family choices, highlighting the freedom women characters have in Antologi Rasa compared to the restrictions placed upon women in Bumi Manusia. The comparison of these novels provides valuable insight into the changing attitudes and roles of women in Indonesian society.

Abstract

This research aims to discover how English for Specific Purposes served the English subject materials at the Tourism department in tertiary education. A needs analysis is carried out to gain information about the student’s perception of English teaching and learning status in the Tourism department. The study's design is descriptive quantitative with a perceptional questionnaire as the primary research data collection instrument. The research participants were the students of the Tourism Department at the Muhammadiyah University of Gorontalo. The results showed that Tourism department students at the Muhammadiyah University of Gorontalo used textbooks that were still oriented towards general English, were not made for their specific department, and were not suited to their level of English mastery. Besides the motivation of students to learn English, the correlation of the English they learn with the needs of English for future work and institutional support also deserves attention. Therefore, developing ESP-based English teaching materials for Tourism students in tertiary institutions becomes a priority.
