Abstract

Penelitian ini mengkaji relasi jiwa dan badan dalam tradisi ngaben di Bali dari sudut pandang filsafat Advaita Vedanta Adi Sankaracarya. Tradisi ngaben merupakan upacara kematian dalam kebudayaan Hindu Bali, yang bertujuan sebagai proses pengembalian unsur pembentuk manusia yang terdiri dari lima unsur, yakni Pertiwi, Apah, Teja, Bayu dan Akasa. Dalam filsafat Advaita Vedanta, Adi Sankaracarya mengajarkan bahwa jiwa (atman) adalah bagian dari kesadaran universal (Brahman) yang tak terbatas dan abadi, serta tidak terpisah dari Tuhan. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan menganalisis teks-teks klasik Advaita Vedanta, serta berbagai literatur tentang tradisi ngaben. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa tradisi ngaben di Bali mencerminkan pemahaman akan sifat abadi jiwa dan keberadaan sementara badan fisik. Prosesi ngaben memiliki makna sebagai bentuk transformasi, di mana badan fisik yang terbakar mewakili sifat fana manusia, sementara jiwa yang abadi melepaskan diri dari keterikatan dengan dunia materi. Upacara ngaben sesungguhnya mengandung pemahaman bahwa jiwa individu adalah bagian yang tak terpisahkan dari kesadaran universal, sesuai dengan ajaran Advaita Vedanta. Penelitian ini juga menyoroti pentingnya ngaben dalam konteks spiritual dan sosial masyarakat Bali, di mana upacara tersebut bukan hanya merupakan penghormatan terakhir bagi yang meninggal, tetapi juga kesempatan untuk merenungkan hakikat eksistensi manusia dan tujuan sejati hidup. Implikasi dari penelitian ini adalah bahwa pemahaman akan sifat abadi jiwa dapat memberikan pandangan yang lebih dalam tentang makna kematian dan pemaknaan hidup dalam tradisi ngaben, serta relevansi filsafat Advaita Vedanta dalam konteks budaya Bali yang kaya akan spiritualitas Hindu.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the dynamics of Hindu life as a minority group in Palangkaraya City through a case study of the implementation of the Ogoh-Ogoh Parade, a religious tradition carried out before Nyepi Day. Using a qualitative approach and case study method, data were collected through observation, interviews, literature studies, and documentation. The results of the study show that the Ogoh-Ogoh Parade is not only a form of spiritual expression of Hindus, but also has social, cultural, and symbolic values ​​in building internal solidarity and interfaith interaction. The implementation of the parade in the 2019–2025 period showed complex dynamics, such as the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and adjustments to activities in 2024 to maintain tolerance when coinciding with the beginning of the month of Ramadan. The positive response from the government and the wider community shows support for the existence of Hindu culture as part of local cultural diversity. This study confirms that the Ogoh-Ogoh tradition can be a unifying medium for multicultural society, a means of value education, and a symbol of the empowerment of Hindus in facing challenges as a minority group.

Abstract

Abstract The doctrine of Catur Varna is a key concept in Hinduism that structures social roles based on inner qualities, work tendencies, and spiritual–ethical values. Consisting of Brahmana, Ksatriya, Vaisya, and Sudra, each Varna carries specific responsibilities aimed at sustaining social harmony. In modern contexts shaped by globalization, industrialization, and evolving religious practices, the interpretation of Catur Varna has shifted significantly. This article examines its contemporary relevance by analyzing socio-cultural changes, transformations in social structure, and the rise of more egalitarian theological interpretations. Using a qualitative literature review, the study draws on Hindu scriptures—such as the Vedas, Bhagavadgita, and Smrti—along with sociological theories and empirical research on Hindu communities in India, Bali, and the diaspora. The findings reveal that Catur Varna remains relevant when viewed as an ethical and professional framework based on guna and karma (aptitude and action), rather than as a hierarchical system that fosters discrimination. In Bali, Varna is increasingly interpreted as part of dharmic values guiding individuals to fulfill their swadharma according to competence and vocation. Globally, it functions as a universal ethical principle applicable to leadership, organizational governance, character education, and professional ethics. The study concludes that Catur Varna, when reinterpreted through the Bhagavadgita’s emphasis on spiritual equality, serves as a philosophical foundation for a just and harmonious modern society. Abstract

Abstrak Konsep Catur Asrama merupakan sistem yang mengatur tahapan kehidupan manusia dalam ajaran Hindu, terdiri dari Brahmacari, Grihastha, Vanaprastha, dan Sannyasa. Penelitian ini bertujuan menganalisis Catur Asrama sebagai model manajemen kehidupan spiritual dan sosial yang relevan untuk menjawab tantangan moral dan sosial di era modern. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah penelitian kepustakaan dengan pendekatan kualitatif, melalui kajian teks suci, literatur akademik, serta penelitian sebelumnya. Hasil kajian menunjukkan bahwa setiap tahap Asrama memiliki nilai-nilai fundamental yang membentuk karakter manusia secara holistik. Brahmacari menekankan pembentukan disiplin dan moralitas; Grihastha mengajarkan tanggung jawab sosial dan keseimbangan kehidupan; Vanaprastha menumbuhkan refleksi diri dan pengendalian nafsu; sedangkan Sannyasa mengarahkan manusia pada pelepasan dan pencerahan spiritual. Relevansi nilai-nilai ini sangat signifikan dalam menghadapi krisis spiritual, disorientasi nilai, dan tekanan hidup modern. Integrasi prinsip Catur Asrama dengan teori manajemen kehidupan kontemporer menunjukkan bahwa ajaran Hindu mampu menjadi model pengelolaan diri yang seimbang antara kebutuhan material, etika sosial, dan pengembangan spiritual. Dengan demikian, penelitian ini menegaskan bahwa Catur Asrama merupakan kerangka filosofis dan praktis yang dapat dijadikan pedoman dalam membangun pribadi yang etis, harmonis, dan berkesadaran spiritual. Abstract

This study aims to analyze the Hindu educational values contained in the Ramayana epic by Valmiki, one of the most significant classical texts in the Hindu tradition. The Ramayana presents moral, ethical, and spiritual teachings that form the foundation of human character development. This research employs a qualitative method using content analysis of the Ramayana text, particularly the sections related to the actions and dialogues of the main characters such as Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, Bharata, and Hanuman. The findings indicate that Hindu educational values in the Ramayana include dharma (truth and moral duty), bhakti (loyalty and devotion), tapasya (self-restraint and spiritual discipline), satya (honesty), and leadership values grounded in wisdom and justice. These values are represented through the exemplary moral and spiritual behavior of the central characters. Furthermore, the educational values in the Ramayana remain relevant for strengthening modern character education, as they offer a universal ethical framework that can be integrated into learning processes. This study is expected to contribute to the development of Hindu education studies and promote the use of classical texts as sources of moral instruction and character formation. Abstract

This study aims to analyze the relevance and implementation strategies of the Tri Kaya Parisudha values (Manacika, Wacika, Kayika) in strengthening the Indonesian national character framework known as the Profile of Pancasila Students. Using a qualitative approach through observation, interviews, and document analysis, the study reveals that Tri Kaya Parisudha has a strong philosophical and pedagogical connection to the six dimensions of the Pancasila Student Profile. However, its implementation in schools remains sporadic and is not systematically integrated into learning processes. Teachers tend to perceive Tri Kaya Parisudha merely as a component of Hindu Religious Education rather than as universal ethical principles applicable across subjects. Additional challenges include the lack of moral-reflection practices, weak digital moral literacy, and school cultures that do not fully support character habituation. The study recommends integrative strategies such as developing teaching modules based on Tri Kaya Parisudha, implementing problem-based and project-based learning, moral dialogues, reflective practices, and strengthening digital ethics. The findings indicate that Tri Kaya Parisudha not only supports moral development but also enhances critical thinking, ethical communication, creativity, responsibility, and collaboration—competencies essential for 21st-century learning. Overall, the study affirms that Tri Kaya Parisudha has strong potential as a local wisdom–based character education
