Abstract

The application of biofloc-aquaponics (biofloqua) in snakehead fish (Chana striata) cultivation is the right solution to increase production and meet high market demand in the Cirebon area. The method used in the preparation of this article is a literature study from various national and international reputable journals. The application of biofloc-aquaponics technology (biofloqua) can be done by making circular planting ponds accompanied by ropes and wires attached to the top of the pond to bind the charcoal and water spinach, winds are made in each pond with 5 additional points of molasses and probiotic swamps as starters. Snakehead fish (Chana striata) was stocked and adjusted, then given three times a day commercial feeding and protein diet. The kale seeds were sown on rockwool substrate in a damp room without sunlight and after roots and a few leaves appeared on the rockwool substrate, they were planted in aquaponic containers. The application of technology Biofloc-aquaponics (biofloqua) can improve the life recovery of snakehead fish (Chana striata). The integration of biofloqua technology can be used as a simple cultivation system in producing fish and vegetables.

Abstract

The utilization of cat’s whiskers (Orthosiphon aristatus) as a herbal plant has long been an integral part of the cultural and traditional health practices of the Tana Toraja community. This medicinal plant has been widely used to treat various ailments, particularly urinary tract disorders, and its use has been passed down through generations. However, these traditional practices have not yet been supported by systematic efforts to improve product quality and added value. This study aims (1) to evaluate the effectiveness of different processing techniques for cat’s whiskers leaves on the quality of ready-to-brew herbal tea, and (2) to examine the influence of storage techniques on the quality and shelf-life of cat’s whiskers herbal tea. A Completely Randomized Design (CRD) was employed, consisting of three processing methods (air-dried sample; blanched and oven-dried at 60°C; and unblanched sample oven-dried at 60°C), two types of packaging (glass jar and standing pouch zipper seal), and two storage conditions (room temperature and cold storage). Observed parameters included moisture content, infusion pH, dried leaf color, and infusion color at weeks two and four. ANOVA results indicated that processing, packaging, and storage had significant effects on moisture content and color (α < 0.05), but no significant effect on infusion pH. The treatment involving blanching and oven-drying at 60°C with airtight packaging and cold storage (P2K2S2) produced the best quality, characterized by low moisture content (6.8–8.7%) and the highest color stability. The pH remained stable (6.20–6.92) throughout the storage period. Based on these findings, it is concluded that controlled drying, airtight packaging, and low-temperature storage are the most effective combination of treatments to enhance the quality and shelf-life of cat’s whiskers herbal tea.

Abstract

Indonesia has abundant biodiversity and great potential to be utilized in the health sector. For a long time, plants in Indonesia have been used for traditional medicine. The use of natural remedies is believed to be safer compared to consuming synthetic drugs. Plants used for traditional medicine are types that contain secondary metabolite compounds. Secondary metabolite compounds are energy or food deposits in plants and can be used when needed. Secondary metabolite compounds can also act as anti-diabetic agents, one of which is alkaloids. Studies have shown that the compounds found in Bajakah Spatholobus litoralis Hassk include alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoids, saponins, and phenolics. Although much initial exploration has been conducted on the phytochemical potential of Bajakah, more in-depth and systematic scientific studies are still needed, especially to identify, isolate, and test the biological activity of each of these compounds.

Abstract

Drought or dry season is an abiotic factor related to low availability of groundwater, which causes impaired plant growth. Water deficiency in plants will disrupt morphological and physiological activities, leading to halted growth. Mycorrhiza is a beneficial microorganism and a harmless symbiotic fungus that provides mutual benefits between soil-transmitted fungi and plant roots, helping in water and nutrient absorption. This study aims to determine the effect of mycorrhiza and the optimal watering level in overcoming drought stress in soybean plants (Glycine max L. Merril.). This study used a factorial Randomized Block Design consisting of 2 treatment factors with 3 replications. The first factor was mycorrhizal dosage with treatments M0 (0 g), M1 (15 g), M2 (25 g), M3 (35 g), and the second factor was the watering interval with treatments P0 (no watering), P1 (1 day), P2 (3 days), P3 (5 days). The study was conducted from January to February 2025. The results showed that the application of mycorrhizal fertilizer influenced the mitigation of drought stress on the vegetative growth of soybean plants. Meanwhile, the best watering treatment was P1 (1 day), which was able to increase the average leaf number parameter. Treatment P2 (3 days) was able to increase the average parameters of stomatal density and shoot dry weight. Treatment P3 (5 days) was able to increase the average parameters of root dry weight and shoot dry weight.

Abstract

Eco-enzyme precipitate derived from fruit peel fermentation has emerged as a promising organic input for sustainable agriculture. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of eco-enzyme precipitate on the vegetative growth of Solanum pimpinellifolium L. A completely randomized design with five treatment levels (P0–P4) was applied. Growth parameters observed included plant height, number of leaves, leaf width, fresh weight, and dry weight. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey’s test at a 5% significance level. The results demonstrated that eco-enzyme precipitate significantly enhanced all measured parameters (p < 0.05). The highest treatment level (P4) consistently produced superior growth performance, with plant height reaching 11.70 cm, leaf number 9 leaves, leaf width 1.63 cm, fresh weight 4.85 g, and dry weight 0.93 g, compared to the control treatment (P0). The progressive increase across treatments indicates a dose-dependent response associated with improved nutrient availability, enhanced photosynthetic capacity, and greater biomass accumulation. The marked rise in dry weight confirms that growth improvement reflected genuine physiological gain rather than temporary water retention. These findings highlight the agronomic potential of eco-enzyme precipitate as a low-cost organic fertilizer capable of improving vegetative growth while simultaneously supporting waste valorization and circular agricultural systems. The study provides empirical evidence that fruit peel-derived eco-enzyme precipitate can serve as a sustainable alternative input for small-scale farming, contributing to environmentally responsible agricultural practices.

Abstract

Agriculture is a dominant ecosystem globally in 2023, farmland and pastureland occupied nearly 50 % (about 48 million km2) of habitable terrestrial land. Since the early 2000s, rates of global agricultural expansion have fallen, but agriculture is still expanding rapidly in the tropics. Expansion of tropical agriculture has been driven by a growing human population, increases in per capita consumption rates for agricultural-derived resources, and the high economic value of agriculture in many tropical countries. While tropical agricultural production can increase food security and support human health and livelihoods, conversion of natural tropical habitat to farms and pastures has had severe environmental consequences and changed social dynamics. The research employed a quantitative approach with a case study method. This method was chosen because it provided an opportunity to conduct an in-depth analysis of the application of environmental ethics in agricultural practices and to systematically examine the effects of these ethics on the growth of oil palm seedlings. The application of environmental ethics in agricultural research, particularly in the study of oil palm seedling vegetation, is crucial for achieving sustainability and ecosystem balance. This research demonstrates that sustainable agricultural practices address not only economic outcomes but also social and environmental impacts. In the context of the palm oil industry, the application of ethical principles such as responsibility, intergenerational equity, and community participation is key to addressing issues of deforestation, pollution, and conflict with local communities. The analysis identified challenges in the application of environmental ethics, such as low public awareness and conflicts of interest among stakeholders. However, multi-stakeholder collaboration and enhanced moral education can be a solution to raise awareness and a shared commitment to environmental sustainability

Abstract

This study aims to systematically examine the role, molecular mechanisms, and effectiveness of DREB (Dehydration-Responsive Element Binding) gene engineering in increasing plant resistance to drought and salinity stress. The method used is the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method guided by PRISMA guidelines through a search of Scopus databases. Based on the results of a systematic literature review of 18 primary articles, the DREB gene has been shown to play an important role as an important factor in increasing plant resistance to abiotic stress. This gene works by activating various stress response genes through binding to DRE/CRT elements in the promoter region, thereby triggering cell protection mechanisms such as increased proline and soluble sugar accumulation, enhanced antioxidant enzyme activity (SOD, CAT, POD), and decreased ROS and MDA levels. The results of the study indicate that DREB gene engineering, especially through overexpression approaches and the use of inducible promoters, generally shows increased tolerance, although the response depends on the gene subtype and the genetic context of the plant. However, its effectiveness is greatly influenced by the type of DREB gene used, the genetic background of the plant, and environmental conditions. Therefore, appropriate selection of gene variants and field-scale testing remain necessary to ensure that increased tolerance of safe tests can be accompanied by sustained stability of results.

Abstract

Global food security demands more precise and efficient plant breeding strategies to develop high-yielding varieties. Marker-Assisted Selection (MAS) is a molecular approach that utilizes genetic markers such as SSRs, SNPs, and InDels to identify superior genotypes from early growth stages. This study employs a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method following PRISMA guidelines to analyze the effectiveness of MAS in enhancing crop productivity compared to conventional methods. Review results indicate that MAS can accelerate breeding cycles, improve selection accuracy, and support strategies such as foreground selection, background selection, and gene pyramiding across various commodities, including rice, maize, wheat, soybean, and alfalfa. Significant success is observed in improved disease resistance, abiotic stress tolerance, and yield stability. However, the implementation of MAS still faces challenges, including high operational costs, limited laboratory infrastructure, the complexity of quantitative traits, and the need for marker re-validation across different genetic backgrounds. Future prospects suggest that the integration of MAS with genomic selection, artificial intelligence, and CRISPR-Cas9 technology will strengthen data-driven predictive breeding systems. Consequently, MAS can be viewed as a strategic solution to accelerate the development of high-yielding superior varieties and support the global food security agenda.

Abstract

Drought is one of thr abiotic factors that can hinder plant growth and productivity. The use of salicylic acid as an antioxidant is expected to enhance plant tolerance to water stress, while adjusting watering intervals serves as an effective water management strategy. This study aims to investigate the effect of salicylic acid application and watering intervals on the drought resistance of soybean plants (Glycine max L. Merr.) during the vegetative phase. This research employed an experimental method using a Randomize Complete Block Design (RCBD) with two treatment factors. The first factor was salicylic acid concentration at three levels: S0 (0 mM), S1 (1 mM) and S2 (2 mM). The second factor was watering interval with four levels: H0 (0-day interval), H1 (1-day interval), H2 (3-day interval) and H3 (5-day interval). Observed parameters included total leaf area, stomatal density, root dry weight, root volume, and canopy dry weight. The result showed that salylic acid concentration 1 mM treatment had a significant effect on total leaf area, stomatal density, root dry weight and canopy dry weight. Watering 5 day interval treatments significantly affected total leaf area and root volume. Meanwhile, the interaction between salicylic acid and watering treatment did not have a significant effect on any of the observed parameters
