Abstract

This research is useful for increasing students' interest in reading through the local cultural reading text "Mbaba Belo Selambar". This research focuses on the meaning of mbaba belo selambar from Tanah Karo to make a reading text for students so they can be more interested in reading. This research method uses qualitative methods and there are 4 (four) informant subjects in it, consisting of tribal chiefs in Tanah Karo, the bride, the bride's family and the community. Data collection techniques through observation, interviews and documentation. The results of this study show what is the meaning of mbaba belo Selambar in Kutambelin Village, Tiga Panah District, Tanah Karo Regency, designing reading texts through Mbaba Belo Selambar for students in Kutambelin Village, Tiga Panah District, Tanah Karo Regency. The results of this study also lead to students' interest in reading, the influence of local culture on students and researchers will design reading texts in English based on "Mbaba Belo Selambar" in Kutambelin Village, Tiga Panah District, Tanah Karo Regency. Abstract

This research is aimed to analyse grammatical errors in the written essays that consists of simple present tense and simple past tense. The sample member in this research is the eighth-grade students who attend Panca Budi school Medan where simple random sampling method is adopted to generate the participants. Qualitative and descriptive research methods are used as the research design. Documentation method is used as the data collection method because the data are the descriptive essays written by 40 eighth-grade students. The research results revealed that all 4 types of errors were found in the students’ essays such as omission, addition, misinformation, and mis ordering. Omission type of errors were known to be dominating with 92 times of occurrence, followed by addition errors with 70 times of occurrence, misinformation errors with 54 times of occurrence, and lastly, mis ordering errors with only 8 times of occurrence. Therefore, eighth-grade students of Panca Budi school Medan commit a significant large number of errors. Abstract

The purpose of this research is to identify and analyze the leadership style of the principal of SD Negeri 173115 Sitompul. The method was used in this research is descriptive qualitative research method. This research was used descriptive qualitative because the researcher described what kind of situationhappened in public schools, especially in terms ofthe leadership style applied by the principal at SD Negeri 173115 Sitompul .Interviews, obeservation and field notes was used in this research. The data were cooleected and interpredted based on the types of leadership style. From the research, it was found that the pricipal of SD Negeri 173115 Sitompul applied a servant leadership type, in which the implementation of this leadership is carried out by prioritizing a moral and familial approach.

Abstract

The study identified and analyzed the types of sentences found in the text and what types of sentences were the dominantly used. Researchers use qualitative descriptive research methods by using analysis documents to obtain the desired results. Researchers collected 88 sentences data. The result showed that first, the types of sentences are declarative, interrogative, imperative and exclamative sentence. Declarative sentence consists of 18 data, interrogative sentence consists of 30 data, imperative sentence consists of 24 data and exclamative sentence consists of 16 data. Second, the data analyzed showed that the interrogative sentence is the most frequency dominant used, while the least frequency dominant is exclamative sentence.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify the different types of errors that ninth-grade students at SMPN 1 Kuta Buluh, Tanah Karo committed when writing narrative texts during the academic year 2022–2023. There were 28 students in this study. The author used a qualitative descriptive approach. On Friday, May 19, 2023, an offline investigation was conducted. The researchers looked into the narrative text writing errors made by the students. The categorization of student writing errors was the study's main goal. The Surface Strategy Taxonomy analysis of the results revealed 40 mistakes in the students' narrative text. 11 addition mistakes totaling 27.5% were made, as were 20 omission mistakes totaling 50%, 7 misformation mistakes totaling 17.5%, and 2 misordering mistakes totaling 5%. The most typical mistake is omission (20).

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe main objective of this descriptive study was to investigate and categorize the mistakes made by 10th-grade students at SMA Free Methodist Medan when they wrote recount texts. Researchers assessed with a written test, which found 168 errors. The study showed that the five most common types of errors occurred, with misspellings being the most common accounting for 58 errors (35%), pronoun usage with 17 errors (10%), simple past tense with 46 errors (27%), punctuation with 23 errors (14%), and preposition usage with 24 errors (14%). Among them, spelling errors were found to be the most dominant, accounting for 35% of the total errors. The researchers also analyzed the causes of these errors and identified three main factors: first language interference with 51 errors (36%), carelessness with 71 errors (50%), and translation with 20 errors (14%). Carelessness was found to be the primary cause, contributingto50% of the errors.

Abstract

There are some English learners feel hard in understanding a sentence when they are tested in listening comprehension. It can be seen when they are joining a test about English conversation although they have learned English Vocabulary and English Grammar. To increase the English learners’ listening comprehension ability, it is so necessary to introduce basic theories of Pragmatics to the English learners. Conversational Implicature theories by Grice is one of the most important aspects from the Pragmatics theories. Conversational Implicature by Grice focused on the phenomenon theory of conveying more than what have been explained in the theory. That is why, English learners as English listeners in this situation must be able to master the conversational implicature theory that already explained by Grice. It was about how to infer the implicature in guiding English learners’ learning and it is able to be learned in such theories in listening comprehension. This research attempted to examine the correlation between them and it stated the role played in the conversational implicature in listening comprehension.

Abstract

This research was done to investigate how PowerPoint presentation technique improves students’ speaking ability. Researchers used a qualitative method which is pre-experimental research design by applying pre-test and post-test based on the indicators of speaking skill, namely: Material, Manner, Vocabulary, and Pronunciation. The data obtained were categorized and analyzed based on several related theories. Regarding the result, it was found that the students shown a positive result by implementing PowerPoint presentation. Student perceives that it helps them to evaluate their ability to speak English, increasing motivation, as well as allowing them to think critically in the use of language. Although several aspects must be developed such as student pronunciation. This finding indicates that PowerPoint presentations are useful for improving students speaking skills

Abstract

Motivation is the drive to do an action or work that is influenced by internal factors and external factors. One of the external factors is the teacher. Teachers are the main success factor in the teaching and learning process. Teachers have a crucial role in determining the quality of learning that is carried out. The purpose of this research is to find out how the learning motivation of students in class XI SMKN 9 Medan and to find out the role of teachers in increasing student learning motivation in Indonesian language subjects in class XI SMKN 9 Medan. The research method used is descriptive qualitative research method. The results showed that student learning motivation in Indonesian language subjects was very much considered by teachers at SMKN 9 Medan and almost evenly the enthusiasm of students was very high in learning Indonesian. Because the Indonesian learning process is not monotonous and not boring for students. The role of teachers in increasing student learning motivation in Indonesian language subjects in class XI SMKN 9 Medan is that teachers act as motivators not only as educators but also as parents with the aim of knowing students' interests and motivation. Teachers conduct assessments to each student to determine learning motivation and student learning achievement periodically.

Abstract

Moral values are very closely related to character education where the goal is to continuously shape and train individual abilities for self-improvement towards a better life.This journal discusses moral values and character education through the medium of a film entitled reverse magic at SMP Kemala Bhayangkari 1 Medan. This study aims to find moral values and character education in the film Upside-Down Magic and also to determine the relevance of moral values and character education contained in the film for class VIII students of SMP Kemala Bhayangkari 1 Medan. The type of research used is a type of qualitative research. The research instruments are note-taking and interviews. The source of the research data was the results of note taking obtained by students through watching films and interviews conducted by researchers with 21 grade VIII students and 2 teachers at SMP Kemala Bhayangkari 1 Medan. The results obtained by the researcher proved that there were moral values and character education that were found by the students themselves in the film entitled Upside-down magic and were proven to be relevant to students which were obtained through interviews with 21 students and 2 teachers. As for the implementation process, the researcher gave instructions to students to be able to discover moral values and character education for themselves in the Reverse magic film by showing the film directly to students.The results of this study have an impact on character education, namely increasing students' motivation to pay more attention to their character. Students are also inspired to apply moral values and character education in everyday life such as never giving up, discipline, courage and perseverance.
