Abstract

Prof. Dr. Haji Abdul Malik Karim Amrullah or often called Buya Hamka. Buya Hamka is an Indonesian intellectual figure who has down-to-earth thoughts and a vision of the future. Happiness or joy is a state of mind or feeling characterized by sufficiency to pleasure, love, satisfaction, enjoyment, or intense joy. Various approaches to philosophy, religion, psychology, and biology have been carried out to define happiness and determine its source. Happiness is the inner realm and not the physical realm. Because of the inner and not physical nature, happiness can be felt by anyone regardless of their social background. Happiness can also be felt by the rich, the poor, officials or ordinary people. This is what our religion teaches that happiness and material things are different, not directly proportional. It is not necessary that every poor person cannot meet the criteria for happiness, it is not necessary that rich people always feel happiness. Al-ghina ghina an-nafs, the real wealth is this inner wealth.

Abstract

The Umayyad dynasty (661-750 AD) was an important milestone in the early history of Islamic civilization that underwent a major transformation from an elective caliphate system to a centralized hereditary monarchy. This research aims to examine historically the transformation of power and cultural policies during the Umayyad period, especially related to Arabization, Islamization, and the role of Damascus as the center of Islamic civilization. The method used is a qualitative-descriptive approach with literature study techniques from relevant sources. The results showed that the Arabization policy, which included the uniformity of administrative language and bureaucratic system, played a major role in building the political and cultural unity of Muslims. Meanwhile, the Islamization process expanded the influence of Islam to Asia, Africa and Europe, as well as creating social dynamics between Arab and non-Arab Muslims (mawali). Damascus developed into a cosmopolite cultural center through the acculturation of Arabic, Byzantine and Persian cultures. This transformation laid the foundation for an inclusive and multicultural global Islamic civilization.

Abstract

Tariqah, as part of the Sufi tradition, plays a significant role in fostering religious moderation within pluralistic societies. Beyond serving as an individual spiritual practice, tariqah functions as a social space that transmits ethical and moderate religious values. A qualitative approach was employed through literature review and empirical observation of tariqah practices and the role of mursyids in socio-religious life. The analysis focused on the internalization of Sufi values, the dynamics of mursyid roles, and variations in their doctrinal orientations. Values such as balance, self-discipline, compassion, and rejection of extremism are internalized through rituals, religious education, and community activities. Mursyids act as both spiritual guides and social agents who shape followers’ religious orientation and mediate the implementation of moderation. The diversity among mursyids ranging from moderate-adaptive, traditional-conservative, to highly modern demonstrates that tariqah is a dynamic tradition capable of maintaining its Sufi essence while responding to social change. Consequently, tariqah contributes significantly to strengthening religious moderation and social harmony through the integration of spiritual and social dimensions.

Abstract

This study explores Hasan Hanafi’s hermeneutics as a contemporary approach to interpreting Islam in response to the challenges of modernity. The rapid development of modern social, political, and cultural dynamics requires an interpretive methodology that goes beyond textual literalism and emphasizes contextual understanding. Hasan Hanafi develops a critical emancipatory hermeneutics that positions human beings as active subjects in interpreting revelation, integrating Islamic intellectual tradition, phenomenology, Marxism, and Western hermeneutics. His hermeneutical framework is built through three levels of consciousness historical, eidetic, and practical aimed at transforming religious texts into a source of social liberation and renewal. This research employs a qualitative method through literature study to analyze Hanafi’s ideas comprehensively. The findings indicate that Hanafi’s hermeneutics serves 006Eot only as a way to understand the text, but also as a transformative paradigm that bridges Islamic tradition with modernity, offering relevant solutions to contemporary issues faced by the Muslim world.

Abstract

Muhammad Arkoun’s Qur’anic hermeneutics offers a critical and transformative framework capable of reopening Islamic religious discourses long confined by orthodox exclusivity. This article examines the epistemological foundations of Arkoun’s hermeneutical project, particularly his concepts of double reading, the distinction between the Qur’anic phenomenon and the closed official corpus, as well as the trilateral structure of the thinkable– unthinkable–unthought. Through these theoretical pillars, Arkoun attempts to deconstruct the established structures of religious authority while formulating possibilities for renewing the study of Islamic theology and philosophy. This study shows that Arkoun’s interdisciplinary approach combining historicism, social anthropology, linguistics, and post-structuralist philosophy provides a revolutionary methodological apparatus for reinterpreting the foundations of Islamic theology. The article argues that Arkoun’s hermeneutics not only critiques the tradition but also offers an epistemological reconstruction for contemporary studies in Islamic creed and philosophy. The findings demonstrate that Arkoun’s intellectual contribution opens new conceptual spaces for reorienting Islamic religious studies from doctrinal-normative frameworks toward critical, reflective, historical, and transformative discourse analysis.
