Abstract

This study aims to describe students' responses toward the implementation of Genre Based Approach through instagram posts in teaching wriitng. This study used descriptive qualitative methods. The participants of the study were 39 students of Vocational High School in Cimahi. The data were taken through questionnaire. The result of this study showed that students gave positive response toward the implementation of teaching writing using Genre Based Approach through instagram posts. The data revealed that all respondents (100%) motivated to get better grades. In addition, most of students (94.4%) stated that learning using Genre Based Approach are interesting and make them courageous in expressing their opinion. Furthermore, most of students (83.3%) also agreed that Genre Based Approach through instagram posts made it easier to understand the material.  Keywords:  Writing, Genre Based Approach, Instagram Posts

Abstract

From the perspective of Activity Theory (AT), this study demonstrates the existence of motivational strategies and influencing factors acknowledged by English Education students to acquire public speaking skills. Subject, object, outcome, tools, community, rules, and division of labor are all components of Activity Theory (AT). This mixed-method study examines the learning experiences of English Education students in relation to AT components. This study included 16 English Education students. The researchers collected data using questionnaires and interviews. The study found that students used a variety of strategies. They were basically forcing themselves to speak, practicing with their peers, and self-practicing (division of labor). The students reported their happiness with the public speaking class learning process (object). The lecturer's varied learning sources also helped the students succeed in class (tools). Their classmates and lecturer aided and supported them positively (community . There were their obligations in the class were made to manage the class (rules). As a result, English Education departments should promote students' motivation in mastering language skills. Future researchers are encouraged to study language skills acquired by language students in a broader context and with more participants. Keywords:  English Education,            Public Speaking Skills, Activity Theory Perspective

Abstract

The objective of the research is to seek the laughter interjection on WhatsApp social media. The data is taken from the conversations on WhatsApp social media. The data are analyzed using Natural Semantic Metalanguage (NSM) theory. The method used is a qualitative method. From the results of the study, it was found that there were several laughter interjections found in WhatsApp social media, namely laughter interjections hahaha, hehehe, wkwkwk, and hiks hiks hiks. The interjection of laughing hahaha indicates a sense of reluctance or discomfort and there is also a sense of humor felt by the speaker. While the laughter interjection hehehe shows the shame towards someone or feels bad because the speaker feels disturbing to others or feels reluctant to treat the interlocutor in the conversation. Then there is the laughter interjection wkwkwk which shows something that is considered very funny so that the speaker or interlocutor feels amused by the stated expression. Finally, there is an interjection of laughing hiks hiks hiks, which is a person's embarrassment about a statement of someone has said. Keywords:  Laughter Interjection, WhatsApp, Natural Semantic Metalanguage

Abstract

This study focuses on the factors of speaking anxiety experienced by pre-service English teachers. In this study, the researcher uses a qualititative research with embracing a case study design. The data was collected from Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale questionnaire developed by Horwitz et al. (1986) through Google Form provided to 22 English language education students. It has 33 items on a 5-point Likert scale. Using Oetting scale, the data that has been collected will be categorized and then interpreted. Based on the results of the questionnaire, the positive statement showed that some pre-service English teachers were still undecided in their speaking skills, and in the negative statement almost they agreed that they were anxious in English speaking. Keywords:  Anxiety, Pre-Service English Teachers, Speaking

Abstract

Amidst the growing usage of technology in the classroom, there is little knowledge about the study of pre-service teachers' perception on using ICT in young learners' classrooms. During the teaching practice of English for Young Learners, the researchers notices that the pre-service teachers practice technology in their classroom. This study focuses on the perception of the pre-service teachers on using technology in the English for Young Learner classroom. The study is a mixed quantitative-qualitative study. The quantitative study data is obtained using a questionnaire to gather numerical data. Meanwhile, the qualitative data is obtained from in-depth interviews to discover more and deeper discoveries about the study. The study finds out that the pre-service teachers have a positive perception about the usage of technology. Furthermore, based on the in-depth interview, the researchers discover that the technology integration makes the pre-service teachers more confident.

Abstract

It is an undeniable fact that nowadays most of the students can enjoy new technology that can be used without any time limit which can be used anytime and anywhere. This allows them to apply these technological developments in their lives, especially in the field of education or learning. This study aims to determine the attitudes and experiences of students in implementing technology-based media innovation in the learning process. The method and design in this research is to use descriptive qualitative research conducted through interviews and tracing relevant literature to answer this research and set forth in a descriptive form. The results of this study indicate that the implementation of technology-based media is very helpful for students in the learning process. The development of technology also increases the number of media that can be used. This makes students explore a lot of learning materials and their knowledge with a wide scope. The application of this media is considered effective to increase student interest in learning, with more and more media making the learning process more enjoyable. It is inevitable that this implementation has obstacles, however, it does not reduce students' initiative to apply technology to their learning process. The use of this technology also encourages students' creativity in the learning process. Apart from being a learning media, technology can be a tool and media in distributing material and providing convenience in communicating learning which of course has an effect on improving the quality of learning. Keywords:  Technology, Learning Media, Implementation, Attitude, Experience

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe the learning outcomes of the second-grade students in one of elementary school in lembang using songs and games as a media. This research used classroom action research (CAR). The characteristics of the action are described as repetitive actions to improve the teaching and learning process in the classroom research. Learning English aims to learn oral and written communication, the most important elements of language are vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, and communication. Therefore, an educator must always remember the importance of creating a comfortable atmosphere, as well as arousing interest and motivation in learning English so that when students learn English from the start they learn in a pleasant atmosphere. Likewise, with the results obtained in this study using song and game media, researchers saw that several changes occurred in the behavior and the ability of students to become enthusiastic to be active in the learning outcomes increased in cycle 1 researching an average value of 65,83 in the medium category and the average value in the second cycle increased to 93,5 in the high category. Keywords:  Song and Game, CAR, Vocabulary

Abstract

This study attempted to find out how students view the use of code switching and code mixing when learning in public speaking course. Code switching is the switching of two languages from one language to another or language variations in one conversation across sentence or clause boundaries. While code mixing is one language to another in the same speech or in the same spoken or written text. This study used 15 class A students of 2020 and a lecturer who taught public speaking courses in that class. This research used a case study method, while the instruments used were observation, interviews, and documentation. The results of the study were (1) code switching and code mixing was very influential in learning especially public speaking. These codes were very helpful in understanding English fully, so that there was no misunderstanding in receiving material from the lecturer, and so that the learning process can run well and the learning materials can be accepted by students perfectly. (2) Several factors caused code switching and code mixing to be carried out in public speaking class, the factors were: (a) Avoid misunderstanding when delivering material. (b) To make sure the student understood what he talked about. (c) To make the learning process be easier, make students able to receive learning materials well. (3) Based on observation, interview, and data documentation, the finding revealed that code switching and code mixing happened when was absent and during learning, the types used by lecturer only code switching, they called as intra sentential, inter sentential, and emblematic. Keywords:  Code Switching, Code Mixing, Public Speaking

Abstract

The existence of globalization has made a shift in the times, starting from the era of writing, printing, to bringing about this period, namely the Revolution Era 4.0. This has led to Information and Communication Technology is growing rapidly at this time, and humans are required to keep up with the times, including in the field of education. The method used in this research is a literature study, which is carried out in stages in the form of searching, finding relevant data, and expressing ideas from the findings. Based on the research results, teachers have challenges to master the skills of using technology. In today's learning, innovation is needed in choosing learning media. Teachers must be creative and innovative in choosing learning media. Learning media that can be used in this era are computers, youtube, and and other media such as WhatsApp, telegram, and e-mail. Abstract

The development of technology is helping humans in many sectors including education. Learning English is very important because English is an international language. Moreover, to be able to speak English, students must master 4 skills in English, namely listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students consider listening learning by using audio as the method is not interesting. Listening learning by using english videos is helping students learn interestingly. In this study, the author did a research about students' perception towards english videos as listening learning media. The participants of this research were 2 senior high school students in Jakarta. The qualitative method in this research is based on Creswell.
