Abstract

Emotions are indicated as central heart in the term of vocabulary learning context. These are being students’ evaluation toward foreign language learning process that provide worthwhile and important information related to cognition, behaviour and even motivation. In this case, the investigation of emotions which personally experienced by university students has not existed in the forefront, still gets a little bit scientific attention, quite limited in the research agenda of vocabulary learning. Keeping that in mind, this research is aimed to investigate university student’s emotional experiences of learning vocabulary through English learning accounts on Instagram. The respondent of this research was a university student from non-English department in sixth semester who studying in one of universities in Lampung province, Indonesia. In order to occupy this research goal, a narrative inquiry is involved to excavate the experiences of a multifaceted kinds of positive and negative emotions. A semi structure interview through Zoom application is employed to collect the data of this research. All of data are analysed by using Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis theory with several steps comprised of reading, coding, theming and interpreting. The result of this research reveals that emotions like happiness, satisfaction, inclination, and security may influence his willingness, feeling, motivation, and learning strategy. Meanwhile, emotions of unhappiness, insecurity and dissatisfaction are signified as the source of the obstacles in learning vocabulary through these accounts. As a matter of this fact, it can be said that emotions play a significant role during the process of learning vocabulary since there is no language learning process without the existence of emotions. Keywords: Emotions, English learning accounts, Vocabulary learning

Abstract

This study investigate the positive relationship between extramural digital activities and EFL students’ willingness to communicate. Extramural digital context is learning English outside the classroom without teachers’ involvement. It encourages EFL students to feel more comfortable in L2 willingness to communicate. Furthermore, this research investigated students’ experiences and factors that may influence EFL students’ willingness to communicate towards extramural digital context using qualitative research, specifically case study as the research design. The researcher collected the data from six EFL students from several universities in Indonesia with four female and two male using semi-structured interview and questionnaires. The interviews data were analyzed by using thematic analysis and using descriptive statistics analysis for the questionnaires. The findings showed that the convenience of extramural digital context and students’ self-confidence indicate as the factors that influence students’ willingness to communicate using English. Additionally, based on students’ experiences of using extramural digital context, listening to music is considered as the most frequently used by students. This research contribute to gain deep understanding about L2 willingness to communicate and extramural digital context. In pedagogical insight, this research help English teacher to facilitate EFL students in extramural digital context to increase students’ willingness to communicate.

Abstract

In this millenial era, the use of learning media as a crucial things to use for gain the students ability based on the learning goals. Podcast is one of the helper tools in English language skills, especially to increasing students’ pronunciation in EFL classroom because of the audio provide a speech of English Native Speaker. Pronunciation is the part of speaking ability which to master by the other people for make a good relation with another person in around the world, because of English is the unifier language. A narrative inquiry design was conducted for obtain the data, observation with interview are necessary. Three students in differents cognitive categories are participated in this researchat one of the Islamic High School in Karawang. Further podcast-assisted learning give the better atmosphere for the students in EFL class, also including motivation factor. As the conclusion all of the students perceive that podcast media is the preeminent and engrossment tools for learning pronunciation.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out students’ perception of utilizing podcasts in learning speaking skills. The researchers used a qualitative approach and basic interpretative design to explore students’ perceptions. Three students were involved in this study. They are first-grade students of the vocational high school in the academic year 2019/2020. The data was gathered from the reflective journal and semi-structured interview. To obtain the data, the researchers analyzed it by thematic analysis. Results of this research, researchers classified three aspects that are the instruction in the podcast, the benefits of the podcast, and the use of podcast. The findings illustrated that students had a positive perception of the utilization of podcasts in learning speaking. Students perceive that podcast is interesting media because it has many contents or topics that they can listen and practice their speaking skill whenever they want. They also agree that podcast is beneficial for speaking achievement, for example, students can increase their vocabularies and word pronunciation.

Abstract

The topic of this study is about the use of U-Dictionary application in learning pronunciation components to the high-level student in intelligibility principles in order to get an understandable conversation in speaking practice. The research questions are asking about the way of using the U-Dictionary application in assisting a student in learning pronunciation components and how are her responses based on the tripartite model from Rosenberg and Havland (1960); affect, behavior, and cognition. The participant is a student in the fourth semester of university in Karawang and the data has been collected by an interview based on the Narrative Inquiry method from Clandinin and Connelly (2000). The finding showed that the application can assist her in learning pronunciation components especially for segmental features such as vowel and consonant and supra-segmental ones in intonation. In short, the U-Dictionary Application can help a student in learning pronunciation components even for supra-segmental features only one aspect existed.

Abstract

Currently, students are asked to be able to understand literacy in reading. However, to understand literacy, of course, it has to go through the right strategy especially to beginner reader students. The purpose of this study is to determine the strategy of students in reading English text through perspective from automatic information processing (AIP) in reading. The method for this study used interviews and observations of one participant conducted in the second-level high school. This study also uses descriptive case study as research design. This study shows 5 things that should be reviewed in reading English text, namely attention, decoding, comprehension, switching in reading and automaticity. However, the five things found in this study are still rarely noticed. Therefore, this study also aims to allow educators and students to know what steps to do as a strategy to be able to read and understand the text of reading in English especially for beginner reader.

Abstract

Speaking is one of four crucial skills in English language learning. The pupils communicate and share their thoughts by language in their everyday life. They use language to make an order, to communicate with others, to express their emotions, thoughts and ideas. Speaking is one of the subjects in an English Education Department, the researcher inspired to evaluate whether the debating method increase the student’s speaking skill or not, especially during the outbreak of the corona virus. As the impact of this virus matter, education is one of some fields got impacted, so schools and universities are closed for more than a year. The new way of teaching learning could be a challenge for both students and instructors. Moreover, there is a need to know on how the students’ perception toward the teaching learning process via video conference, was it feel the same. However, this paper investigates the EFL students’ perception of speaking courses through the debating process during the pandemic. This study employing qualitative narrative inquiry. The data gathered from some the experiences of three Indonesian EFL students in university. The author was done collected the data conducted a semi-structured interview using a call through messages application. The study found that the participants’ perceptions toward speaking course conducted via video conference encourage their critical thinking, their team-work, students’ social skill and their interest towards the subject. It seems that the debate technique is impacted the students positively by promoting their critical thinking, social skill, team work and students’ satisfaction towards the subject.

Abstract

This study aims to determine modelling techniques in Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) in reducing the pronunciation errors of students. In this study, researcher used a qualitative approach with descriptive methods. Subjects in this study were English education students who took the English Spelling Corner (ESC) program. This research data was obtained from observation, interviews and documentation. There were 6 samples taken from students who participated in the spelling corner program. The results of this study designated that in learning English pronunciation by using NLP modelling techniques, students are able to practice according to the right way. This technique is able to make students easier to pronounce English by modelling native speakers in the video material that has been prepared in learning activity. Wherefore, it is easy to model English pronunciation directly from native speakers, students are able to reduce errors in aspects of the pronunciation such as vowel sounds, consonant sounds, stress in English syllables, intonation and even accents like native speakers. The impact on English learners is that the quality of the English pronunciation of students who take the English spelling corner is getting better and more self-assured.Key words: Pronunciation, Neuro Linguistic Programming, Vowel and Consonant   Sounds

Abstract

In this study the researchers sought to develop a pattern of reading teaching in the English for Public Relations course. The development of the pattern researchers realized in the reading exercise pattern using news text media. This certainly will arouse the curiosity of the participants, compared to the pattern of practice materializing formal texts or even reading texts with old themes. The use of news texts that are more casual in nature certainly can be used as a benchmark for students' reading skills, especially in honing the scanning and skimming skills they have learned before. How fast the participants in reading and understanding the meaning they read is the target of success that the researchers saw, so that in the future researchers can find other ways to apply the method of scanning and skimming with other text media.

Abstract

Penelitian ini membahas tentang perspektif siswa tentang movie pendek bahasa Inggris sebagai media untuk membantu penguasaan kosakata mereka dalam pembelajaran online. Penelitian ini menggunakan inkuiri naratif. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi perspektif siswa tentang penggunaan movie pendek bahasa Inggris sebagai media untuk membantu penguasaan kosakata mereka dalam pembelajaran online. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan 3 partisipan di kelas 11, dengan rata-rata usia 16-17 tahun pada tahun ajaran 2020-2021. Peserta berasal dari SMAN 2 Telukjambe Timur, Karawang dimana mereka diberikan wawancara terkait movie pendek untuk membantu penguasaan kosakata mereka. Dalam penelitian ini siswa pernah mengalami atau pernah melakukan proses pembelajaran dengan menggunakan movie pendek. Dalam pengumpulan data, penelitian ini menggunakan wawancara dan dokumentasi virtual melalui aplikasi Zoom. Selanjutnya peserta di SMAN 2 Telukjambe Timur adalah siswa yang bersedia mengikuti penelitian ini. Teknik yang digunakan dalam analisis data mengacu pada Braun dan Clark (2006) dengan meliputi 6 aspek analisis. Selain itu, temuan ini dibagi menjadi 6 aspek, meliputi (1) Alasan, (2) Afektif, (3) Metode, (4) Jenis kelas kata, (5) Jenis movie, (6) Kelebihan dan kekurangan
