Abstract

The objectives of this study are to show the depiction of racism, which are followed by prejudice and discrimination towards black Americans based on context-relationship with The Butler (2013) during 1920s until 1960s. This article used a qualitative method with auteur theory, mise-en-scene and thick description. Based on The Butler (2013), this study show that racism, which were followed by prejudice and discrimination towards blacks, emerged caused by slavestereotyping which stressed blacks as inferior and whites that uphold white-supremacy concept, as superior. Apparently that through The Butler, Lee Daniels wants to highlight that actually public policies or government laws which regulate citizens’ civil rights and slavery are not adequate to restrain or eradicate racism towards blacks American.

Abstract

Sociolinguistics aspects such as Semantic and Pragmatic affect language user in every situation. Those two contexts even exist in a proficiency test to become the test foundation. This research was conducted to identify the semantic and pragmatic contexts in TOEFL test simulation on the Listening section. The researcher applied a qualitative descriptive approach to this research, and Document Analysis and the researcher as the instrument. The object of this research was TOP NO 1 TOEFL SIMULATION published by FORUM TENTOR INDONESIA. The result reveals that there are several types of semantic and pragmatic context found in the test simulation. The semantic contexts found in 8 questions from the 30 questions analyzed. The types of semantic contexts which were found namely; Meaning, Semantic Feature, and Semantic Roles. Moreover, the semantic type that mostly occurred is Semantic Roles (4 Questions), then followed by Semantic Feature (2 Questions) and Meaning (2 Questions). However, the Pragmatic context quantities are found more than the semantic context. From the 30 analyzed questions, the Pragmatic contexts found are 40 questions, it happens because one test item can have more than one type of pragmatic. Also, the Reference type in Pragmatic occurred in most questions because the narrator on the listening passage uses referencing (nature of Reference) to make the question. The type of pragmatic context found namely; Context, Politeness, Reference, and Speech Act. The type of pragmatic context which is mostly occurred is Reference (25 questions).

Abstract

This research attempted to determine issues faced by minority ethnic groups? students in English Language Education Department in private university in Malang, and whether ethnicity and social aspects played significant roles in the students? language proficiency reflected in their vocabulary in writing class. The researcher analysed writing samples taken from 16 students from both minority and majority ethnic groups by utilising Voyant Tools which focused on vocabulary density and average words per sentence.  Followed with spreading questionnaires to eight students of minority ethnic groups and interviewing two of them who earned highest scored based on Voyant Tools. Those sessions were analysed with Thick Description to focus on related issues regarding vocabulary proficiency and ethnicities. The results taken from Voyant Tools indicated that students from minority ethnic groups were lesser than the students from majority one?s. Those results depicted the vocabulary proficiency of students from minority ethnic groups in writing, and those results were affected by educational deprived in their origins, and verbal abuse regarding their ethnicity. The researcher discovered that verbal abuse towards ethnicity regarded as individual discrimination that strengthens the majority?s idea to emphasise their superiority over the inferior. People tend to overlook the fact that verbal abuse among students was existed in universities and it affecting students? performance. This notion was supported by the result taken from Voyant Tools in which the result shown that the minority ethnic groups were lesser than majority one?s and the effect were reflected at their writing, notably their vocabulary proficiency.

Abstract

Abstract: Introducing and Coaching English Drama in English Club Extracurricular in SMP Muhammadiyah 8 Batu. SMP Muhammadiyah 8 Batu is one of business enterprises owned by Muhammadiyah located in Batu, East Java. Students in this school have interest and ability in English, but they do not have enough access to sharpen their ability. The reason lies behind it is the lack of extracurricular activity focusing on stimulating their English ability, especially in literature. Literature is an important aspect in language. In this occasion ahead, the focus is on drama. Coaching English drama in extracurricular is expected to facilitate the students. The result of this program was that the coaching clinic was able to help to train and establish the students’ ability in performing English drama. The students were quite enthusiastic in following the program instead of many obstacles found. The obstacles were that not all students had high interest in English drama, the students had lack knowledge of pronunciation, and lack understanding of drama as a whole.

Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the efforts made by minority groups who are being oppressed by racism based on context-relationship of African Americans at the movie 42 (2013). Findings of this article based on qualitative studies with auteur theory, and mise-en scene, undertaken in movie 42 (2013) regarding racism towards minority groups, African-American, and by implementing thick description the researcher highlighted minority group’s achievement’s at the movie 42 in the field of Sports and the relation to life-betterment. The result revealed that racism towards minority group had emerged because of the so-called white’s supremacy concept. This study found that African American as minority group were able to alter their life despite of racism through equal sport’s opportunity. Besides, this study has highlighted one pivotal area in which any minority group should concern to enhance their life; sports. Moreover, even though this study focusing more on the relation of the effort’s made by minority group at America, this study illustrates the importance of having initiatives in providing better opportunity related to sports to ensure a better life opportunity among minority groups all over the globe.

Abstract

The aims of this study are: 1) to find out how the teacher training in PAUD Surya Gemilang, Malang, is carried out in implementing the book Let’s Respect Each Other: A Story-Telling Book of Character Building by using various methods and fun learning techniques, and 2) how the practice of using the book of Let’s Respect Each Other: A Story-Telling Book of Character Building. This research was conducted using a qualitative method in which the researcher described the process of the two aims aforementioned. The subjects of this study were all teachers, especially one homeroom teacher at PAUD Surya Gemilang. The results of this study found that in the first phase, namely teacher training, there were three stages. They were the provision of English for Young Learners material, the provision of story-telling material, and the provision of character education material. Then, in the second phase, namely the implementation of Let’s Respect Each Other: A Story-Telling Book of Character Building, it was found that teachers taught stories and character education by reading books in English and Bahasa alternately while showing the pictures that matched the story to students and retelling the stories by using puppets.

Abstract

Reinforcing character education in the early childhood education or preschooler was deemed important nowadays; however, in order to do so it requires creative yet unique method to pique young pupils’ interest. Therefore, this research intends to elaborate the idea of reinforcing character education by implementing Bilingual Story-Telling Picture Book towards the pupils at one of the preschoolers located in Malang, East Java. This Bilingual Story-Telling Picture Book was composed specifically to teach the students about character education by integrating it with one of extracurricular activities in this school, the English language extracurricular activity. Therefore, this Bilingual Story-Telling Picture Book attempted to not only reinforcing the young pupils’ character education in story telling activity, but also improving their literacy and interest towards English language. Thus, the results indicate that the students were keen on learning English on the story-telling activity delivered by the teacher in charge whilst absorbing the value of character education delivered by the book.
