Abstract

Sustainable interior design studies tend to focus on the ecological performance of materials and systems, while studies on Third Place predominantly emphasize the quality of users’ social interactions within space. The separation of these two approaches indicates the limited availability of evaluative frameworks capable of examining ecological and social relations simultaneously in café interior design. This study aims to examine the integration of Sustainable Interior Design principles and Third Place characteristics in café interior design through an integrative evaluative framework. The research adopts a qualitative approach using a theory-driven evaluative case study strategy, with the interior design of Loka Rasa Café as a single case. The data consist of design documents, including conceptual narratives, spatial configurations, three-dimensional visualizations, as well as technical and material specifications, which are analyzed using an evaluative matrix based on sustainability and social space indicators. The findings reveal that ecological sustainability and Third Place characteristics do not operate as separate dimensions, but intersect in shaping the overall quality of interior space. Strategies such as the use of recycled materials, modular construction systems, and the optimization of natural ventilation and lighting not only enhance ecological performance but also reinforce spatial qualities that are inclusive, egalitarian, and conducive to social interaction. The novelty of this study lies in the development of an integrative evaluative framework that links ecological and social dimensions within a single indicator-based analytical model. The findings suggest that the quality of social interaction in informal public spaces can emerge as a direct consequence of sustainable design strategies. This study contributes to the development of a more holistic approach to interior design, although it is limited to a conceptual case and requires further validation through user-based empirical observation

Abstract

This study examines participatory design as a strategy for developing pandan craft products by combining woven pandan and synthetic leather to advance the local creative industry in Nagari Padang Laweh Selatan, Sijunjung. The research is motivated by the limited design variation, finishing quality, and market competitiveness of traditional pandan products produced by Kelompok Wanita Tani Sejahtera Sijunjung. This study aims to describe the participatory design process, analyze the potential of material combination, and formulate product development strategies rooted in local knowledge and market needs. A qualitative case study method was applied through observation, semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, visual documentation, and design experiments. The results show that the integration of woven pandan and synthetic leather can improve product structure, visual quality, functional value, and contemporary appeal while maintaining local identity. Several product prototype s, including bags, wallets, keychains, and coasters, were developed through collaborative exploration between artisans, researchers, designers, business actors, and prospective consumers. The findings indicate that participatory design strengthens artisans’ involvement, encourages knowledge exchange, and supports more realistic and sustainable product innovation. The study concludes that participatory design is an effective approach for empowering women artisans, increasing product value, and supporting community-based creative industry development

Abstract

Semiotic and maritime mythological representations in the film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales using Roland Barthes semiotic approach. The research is conducted based on the assumption that film is not only an entertainment medium but also a cultural communication medium that produces signs, symbols, and myths through visual narratives. The purpose of this study is to analyze denotative, connotative, and mythological meanings in the film, identify narrative structures through Roland Barthes five narrative codes, and examine maritime cultural representations contextualized with Indonesian maritime culture. This research applies a descriptive qualitative method through observation, documentation, and visual analysis of scenes, dialogues, and symbols in the film. The findings reveal that the film constructs meaning through representations of sea curses, ghost ships, sea rulers, mysterious ocean territories, and sacred artifacts that shape modern maritime mythology. Barthes five narrative codes demonstrate that the film’s story structure is developed through mystery, conflict, visual symbolism, and cultural references that strengthen the fantasy adventure atmosphere. The study identifies symbolic correlations between the film’s mythology and Indonesian maritime culture, including the legends of SS Ourang Medan, the Masalembo Triangle, Nyi Roro Kidul, Keris Kyai Sengkelat, and the Larung Sesaji ritual practiced by Javanese coastal communities. This research shows that global popular films can be contextualized with local values through representations of maritime culture and mythology.
