Abstract

The legendary Drupadi, which is derived from the Mahabharata's narrative is almost always recited in a traditional manner, and the only reason it is done thus is to serve as a symbol of men's and women's feelings of love and affection. But in the dynamics of contemporary society today, there is a great urgency to reconstruct that image such that it is still relevant to present issues related to empowerment and complexities of women’s identity. In order to provide a solution, this research utilises artwear designs as a form of presentation with the purpose of introducing the character of Drupadi to the metropolitan population. aimed at making the character of Drupadi a symbolic depiction of women’s strength and empowerment in present socio-cultural realities. This Kreative process utilises the method of creation by Prof Dharsono which is done in 4 systematic stages, namely observation, experiment, contemplation and formation. The researcher can dissect the depth of meaning of the character and analyse the denotative and connotative codes of each visual element contained in the artwear design by using Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach. This research through visual exploration of form and colour results in artwear designs that not only emphasise the aesthetic aspect but also convey a deep message about the firmness of identity. The analysis results suggest the visual element is effective in communicating the shift in meaning from passive compliance to active power. The conclusion is that this artwear design has successfully worked as an effective visual communication medium and symbolic element that reflects the Reposisi and identity of women in the midst of heterogeneity of urban society nowadays

Abstract

This study examines the representation of maritime visual identity in the cities of Palembang and Makassar. The study is motivated by the gap between Palembang’s strong historical maritime legacy rooted in the Sriwijaya civilization and the relatively weak representation of maritime identity in the public sphere, while Makassar demonstrates a more consistent maritime identity through the use of the Pinisi symbol. To understand this difference, the study compares visual characteristics, the relationship between symbols and maritime identity, and the consistency of symbolic reproduction in both cities. This study aims to analyze the visual representation of maritime identity in Palembang and Makassar and to identify differences in the strength of the visual identities formed. A comparative qualitative approach was employed. Data were collected through visual observation, documentation, and literature review, and were analyzed through the identification and classification of visual elements, interpretation of meaning, and comparison between the two cities. The findings reveal that the visual representation of Sriwijaya in Palembang remains fragmented, lacks a dominant visual symbol, and has not yet developed into a consistent visual identity system. In contrast, the Pinisi symbol in Makassar is continuously reproduced across various visual media, forming a maritime identity that is more dominant, consistent, and easily recognizable. This study concludes that the strength of maritime visual identity is determined not only by historical and cultural heritage but also by the presence of distinctive symbols and the consistency of their visual reproduction in building collective recognition in the public sphere

Abstract

Digital transformation has driven changes in Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) marketing strategies through the utilization of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, particularly in the development of visual communication on social media. AI technology enables business owners to generate more creative, personalized content tailored to audience characteristics, thereby potentially enhancing customer engagement and business performance. This study aims to analyze the effect of Artificial Intelligence-based visual communication on customer engagement, examine the effect of customer engagement on MSME performance, and test the mediating role of customer engagement in this relationship. The research employs a quantitative approach with an explanatory research design. Data were collected through observation, brief interviews, and questionnaires distributed to 383 culinary and fashion MSME owners in Serang City, selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data analysis was conducted using the Structural Equation Modeling–Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) method with SmartPLS 4 software. The results indicate that AI-based visual communication has a positive and significant effect on customer engagement (β=0.788; p<0.001) and MSME performance (β=0.325; p<0.001). Furthermore, customer engagement is proven to have a positive effect on MSME performance (β=0.614; p<0.001) and acts as a partial mediator. This study concludes that the implementation of AI-based visual communication enhances digital marketing effectiveness and contributes to improving MSME performance through stronger customer engagement. These findings serve as practical recommendations for MSME owners in Serang City to optimize the use of AI as a competitive strategy in the digital economy era

Abstract

This study explores how the aesthetic values of the Jiwa Temple Site in Karawang can be transformed into an artwear headpiece design. The research is motivated by the need for new approaches to preserving the cultural identity of the Jiwa Temple Site, which is currently facing physical deterioration, natural weathering, and damage caused by human activities due to its location in an open rice-field area. As an alternative form of cultural preservation, this study develops a headpiece inspired by the temple's architectural form and symbolic characteristics. The main objective of this research is to reinterpret the visual and structural elements of the Jiwa Temple Site into a contemporary headpiece design that offers both aesthetic originality and cultural meaning. To achieve this objective, the study adopts a Practice-Based Research approach, supported by descriptive analysis to examine the temple's visual characteristics and semiotic analysis to interpret the cultural meanings represented in its architectural elements. The results show that the transformation process successfully translates the visual grandeur of the Jiwa Temple Site into a lightweight wearable artwork without losing its aesthetic identity. The resulting headpiece not only contributes to the development of artwear design from both practical and theoretical perspectives but also functions as an alternative medium for introducing and promoting local cultural heritage, thereby encouraging greater public awareness of its preservation.
