Abstract

The preservation of local culture is a strategic effort to ensure the sustainability of cultural heritage so that it remains alive and can be transmitted to future generations. In the educational context, one relevant form of local cultural preservation is through traditional art education, particularly Jepara wood carving art. This study aims to examine the implementation of Jepara wood carving as a subject at MTs Miftahul Huda Ngasem, Batealit District, Jepara Regency, as a medium for preserving local culture amid the challenges of modernization and the declining interest of younger generations in traditional arts. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method with a case study approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with the school principal, the wood carving teacher, and students, as well as direct observation of the learning process and documentation of learning activities and students’ wood carving artworks. The findings indicate that: (1) Jepara wood carving instruction is conducted through the introduction of traditional carving techniques, the internalization of cultural values and historical aspects of wood carving, and hands-on practice that enhances students’ skills and appreciation of local culture; (2) Several obstacles were identified, including limited facilities and infrastructure, restricted instructional time, and variations in students’ levels of interest; and (3) Students’ responses to the wood carving subject were generally positive, as reflected in increased interest, active participation, and a growing sense of pride in regional culture. Therefore, the Jepara wood carving subject plays an important role as an effective medium for preserving and developing local culture through formal education

Abstract

Balanga is a traditional ceramic artifact that plays an important role in the social and cultural life of the Dayak people of Palangka Raya, Central Kalimantan. However, studies of traditional ceramics in Indonesia have so far focused more on aspects of technology, style, and history, so that understanding of Balanga as an active cultural agent in the perspective of material culture is still limited. This condition has implications for the marginalization of the role of artifacts in shaping social relations, visual meaning production, and cultural identity dynamics in material culture, design, and visual anthropology studies in Indonesia. This study aims to reveal the relationship between the material aspects, social functions, and symbolic meanings of Balanga as cultural heritage artifacts in the daily practices of the Dayak community. This study uses a qualitative approach based on material culture theory, supported by artifact analysis and semiotic interpretation. Data were collected through field observations, in-depth interviews with traditional leaders and cultural practitioners, as well as documentation of Balanga owned by the community and museum collections. The results of the study show that Balanga not only functions as a utilitarian ceramic container, but also as a ritual object, family heirloom, and a marker of social identity and collective memory. The material characteristics of Balanga reflect a mature mastery of traditional ceramic technology, while its decorative motifs, especially the dragon motif, represent symbolic meanings that are formed through negotiations between

Abstract

This study examines how environmentally friendly typography plays a role in sustainable packaging design for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Banyumas Regency. The research is motivated by the tendency of MSME packaging design practices to focus primarily on the use of environmentally friendly materials, while visual elements particularly typography have not yet been regarded as a strategic component of sustainability. In fact, typographic choices influence readability, ink efficiency, production processes, and consumers’ perceptions of a product’s environmental value. The aim of this study is to identify the types of typography used in MSME packaging and to analyze the concept and role of environmentally friendly typography as a sustainable design strategy. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method with a design approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with MSME actors, designers, and consumers, as well as visual observations of more than 100 food and beverage packaging samples. The analysis was conducted thematically and supported by descriptive statistics. The findings indicate that 47% of packaging still uses decorative typefaces, 22% demonstrate low readability, and 66% do not apply typographic consistency. Conversely, more than 60% of respondents acknowledge that typography influences perceptions of sustainability. This study formulates four metrics for environmentally friendly typography: readability, visual efficiency, information hierarchy, and typographic consistency. Therefore, environmentally friendly typography can function as an integrative sustainable design strategy in the packaging of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Banyumas

Abstract

In wood-based practical learning, Industrial Product Design students require facilities that support efficiency, ergonomics, and workplace safety. Currently used  router woodworking benches suffer from limitations in stability, load capacity, and work surface dimensions that do not align with user anthropometry. This study aims to redesign a portable wood  workshop table using the SCAMPER method, focusing on functional enhancement, ergonomic adaptation, and alignment with beginner students’ needs. A Human-Centered Design framework was employed, supported by student anthropometric data for dimensional adjustments. The redesign features an expanded work surface improved structural stability via aluminum frame with cross-bracing, a modular system for combining two tables, and ergonomic component reorganization based on primary, secondary, and tertiary work zones. The final design demonstrates significant potential in enhancing workflow efficiency, postural comfort, and usage flexibility within educational  workshop settings

Abstract

Maapam tradition is an annual tradition of the West Pasaman community, held during the month of rajab through the collective preparation of apam as an expression of gratitude, charity, and to welcome the holy month of ramadhan. This tradition carries both religious and social values, reflecting togetherness and communal activities passed down through generations. However, these local wisdom values have rarely been translated into textile craftworks, as maapam has traditionally been known merely as an annual activity without visual forms or physical symbols that signify or represent it as a cultural heritage. Therefore, the creation of batik motifs becomes an effort to present symbolic visual forms, document its values, and strengthen cultural identity so that it is more easily recognized and transmitted to future generations. This creative research aims to design motifs derived from the values and meanings of the maapam tradition through stylization, as well as to realize these motifs on long cloth using the hand-drawn batik technique. The method applied refers to the craft art creation process, consisting of the stages of exploration, design, realization, and presentation. The result is hand-drawn batik cloth representing the values of gratitude, togetherness, sharing, and mutual cooperation in the maapam tradition. The systematic application of this method produces batik works that are not only aesthetically valuable but also deeply meaningful as a form of preserving local traditions

Abstract

In the midst of modernization, the younger generation's interest in local culture, including Minangkabau traditional clothing, especially in the Koto Nan Gadang area, is decreasing. This condition encourages the need for a creative approach to revive the values and philosophical meanings inherent in Koto Nan Gadang traditional clothing, one of which is through the design of two-dimensional illustrations as a visual medium that is close to today's generation. This study aims to design a two-dimensional illustration of the youngest daughter (unmarried woman) wearing traditional clothing typical of the Koto Nan Gadang area in West Sumatra as a visualization of local culture through digital illustrations. The design method used is the Five Phases of Design Graphic Process method designed by Robin Landa. The method consists of 5 stages, namely orientation, analysis, concept, design, and implementation. Data collection was carried out qualitatively obtained from observations and interviews, as well as from books or archives related to the research object. This design produces a female character wearing traditional clothing typical of Koto Nan Gadang which is visualized in a two-dimensional illustration style, so that it can be a documentation and visual interpretation of traditional clothing of West Sumatra, especially in Koto Nan Gandang. This work not only functions as a medium for art appreciation, but also as an educational tool in introducing the cultural identity of Koto Nan Gadang to a wider audience, especially the younger generation who are familiar with digital media

Abstract

This study examines the philosophical meaning of the sajen (offering) tradition at the Pesta Laut in Sukabumi Regency, which is often marginalized in modern discourse due to readings limited to assumptions of irrationality. Academically, the urgency of this research stems from the limitations of previous studies that generally focus on the sociological or ecological functions of coastal rituals but have not specifically integrated the analysis of sign structures with local epistemology. This study aims to fill this methodological gap by comprehensively deconstructing the symbolic meaning of sajen. Through a qualitative design based on literature study, this research integrates two analytical frameworks: Roland Barthes' semiotics to dissect the visual sign order, and the Panca Curiga methodology as a specific analytical tool for Sundanese wisdom. The sign-reading process is operationalized through the Pancaniti dialectical stages. The analysis results indicate that the elements of sajen do not stand randomly but form a structured sign system containing knowledge about cosmology, social ethics, and traditional ecology. Specifically, the Panca Curiga analysis reveals the connection between the sajen concept and the teachings of Sastra Jendra, the essence of which is the governance of harmony between humans and the universe. In conclusion, the sajen tradition in Pesta Laut can be understood as a custom-based environmental conservation mechanism and a rational local knowledge system. This study contributes methodologically by offering the operationalization of integrating modern semiotics and Panca Curiga as an interpretation model for Nusantara cultural text

Abstract

The design of contemporary batik motifs represents an innovative effort to expand the potential of batik as a medium of expression that adapts to contemporary cultural and technological developments. This project combines traditional batik elements with contemporary technology-themed visuals by presenting humanoid robot imagery as the main motif, supported by robot characters, technological components, and mechanical elements. The visual development adapts the rigid form of robots with warm retro color tones, creating dynamic and narrative visual patterns that reflect a modern aesthetic. The design is applied using a full-repeat one-step pattern system specifically targeted at teenage male consumers. The repetitive pattern arrangement produces a catchy, playful, and casual visual impression that aligns with the preferences of youth who tend to favor unique, exclusive products with strong visual identities. The production process employs a cold wax screen-printing technique, a batik waxing method using screen printing tools that enables more efficient motif detailing. This technique also offers a distinctive characteristic, as it remains relatively unfamiliar among traditional batik artisans. The results indicate that robot-themed batik motifs have strong potential as visual innovations for development within the creative and fashion industries. This design approach not only introduces new aesthetic expressions but also opens opportunities for batik to become more relevant to younger generations while strengthening cultural sustainability in the modern era
