Abstract

This research is driven by the scarcity of religious-themed visual media capable of engaging the younger generation, particularly through popular platforms such as Webtoon. The urgency of this study lies in the need for innovative proselytizing (dakwah) media that resonates with contemporary visual tastes without compromising historical substance. The primary focus of this research is the visualization of Islamic values in the character design of Joko Samudro, an adaptation of the youth of Sunan Giri. This study aims to present a religious figure that is aesthetically relevant for today's Muslim youth. The research method employed is descriptive qualitative with Roland Barthes' semiotic approach to deconstruct the sign system in the character's visualization. Data were collected through interviews with the managers of the Giri Kedaton historical site, topographical observations, and questionnaires distributed to 102 respondents. The results indicate that Islamic values such as amanah, siddiq, and fathanah are manifested through a blend of traditional-modern attire with an earth-tone color palette (brown and white) symbolizing spiritual purity. Semiotically, the symmetrical white udeng (headtie) denotes self-control, while the loose baju kurung represents Islamic simplicity. In conclusion, this design successfully integrates historiographic identity with contemporary semi-realist visual trends, making the character of Joko Samudro an effective instrument for social meaning-making among the younger generation

Abstract

Pempek, a traditional food from South Sumatra has strong potential to be developed through product innovation in order to remain relevant to modern consumer preferences. The innovation of mozzarella-filled pempek requires an appropriate packaging design strategy as a visual communication medium to build consumer perception, attractiveness, and product identity. This study is motivated by the limited effectiveness of packaging design strategies for innovative local food product in integrating local identity with modern visual aesthetics. The purpose of this study is to formulate a packaging design strategy for mozzarella pempek based on a visual communication design approach. A descriptive quantitative method was employed, with data collected through questionnaires to identify consumer perception, visual preferences, and evaluations of packaging design elements, complemented by expert validation using the Aiken’s V method. The results indicate that the packaging design strategy achieved a high level of attainment, emphasizing visual clarity, modern design style, attractive color selection, informative typography, and the integration of local cultural elements as visual identity. Expert validation results show that all indicators fall within the valid to highly valid categories (V ≥ 0.75), confirming that the packaging design strategy has adequate content validity. This study concludes that packaging design strategy plays a crucial role as a visual communication medium in shaping positive consumer perception of mozzarella pempek as an innovative local food products

Abstract

The promotion of Rumah Ong Boen Tjiet as a Chinese cultural heritage site in the city of Palembang is driven by the declining public awareness, particularly among the younger generation, toward local cultural heritage due to the influence of globalization and the dominance of popular culture in digital media. Rumah Ong Boen Tjiet is a historical building that represents the acculturation between Chinese culture and local Palembang culture, as reflected in its architecture, ornaments, and historical values. However, the lack of effective promotional strategies, along with suboptimal environmental conditions and accessibility to the site, has resulted in limited public recognition. Therefore, a visual communication strategy is needed to introduce and enhance public awareness of the cultural and historical significance of this site. The objective of this design project is to develop a promotional identity that represents the historical and cultural values of Rumah Ong Boen Tjiet, while also formulating an effective promotional strategy that remains relevant in the context of modern media development. The method used in this project is the Design Thinking approach, which includes the stages of empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test. Data collection techniques involve observation, interviews, documentation, and literature studies. The results of the project indicate that the use of visually based promotional media, such as promotional videos and other visual communication tools, can enhance the attractiveness of cultural information and expand the reach of publication, especially among younger audiences. Thus, this design is expected to support the preservation of Rumah Ong Boen Tjiet as part of cultural heritage and as a cultural tourism destination in the city of Palembang

Abstract

Floating food stalls in Palembang represent a unique culinary tourism potential, blending the scenic beauty of the Musi River with the authentic flavors of traditional cuisine. This research is driven by the urgent need to address various challenges faced by these establishments, particularly regarding environmental cleanliness, inadequate infrastructure, and an unappealing visual image that has led to a decline in tourist interest and public trust. This study aims to create a visual identity and promotional media to enhance a positive image while strengthening local cultural values through a Visual Communication Design approach. The problem-solving plan involves integrating Palembang’s distinctive visual elements, such as Songket motifs, Musi River color palettes, and stilt house ornaments, into a comprehensive design system. The methodology employed is a qualitative descriptive approach, including field observations, in-depth interviews, and visual analysis to ensure authentic design solutions. The results indicate that a structured visual identity effectively repositions floating food stalls as modern culinary icons while preserving local wisdom. Furthermore, the implementation of tangible, non-digital media that is both educational and functional provides a new experience for visitors. In conclusion, this design serves not only as a marketing tool but also contributes significantly to building collective public awareness regarding the importance of maintaining cleanliness and the sustainability of river-based culinary tourism in Palembang for a better tourism future

Abstract

This study examines the construction of symbolic meaning in gender transformation within the Baris Kekupu dance of Banjar Lebah through the medium of documentary film. Previous studies tend to frame gender transformation merely as a shift in performer roles; however, this research positions it as a process of reinterpreting meaning in relation to sacred values in Balinese culture. Drawing upon the concept of Rwa Bhineda - a principle of balance between two opposing yet complementary forces - this study argues that the presence of female dancers in Baris Kekupu does not diminish its sacredness but instead represents a symbolic balance between masculinity and femininity. This research employs a qualitative approach with semiotic analysis based on Ferdinand de Saussure, focusing on the relationship between signifier and signified within the visual and narrative elements of the documentary film. Data were collected through observation, interviews, questionnaires, and literature review, and were integrated into the production of an expository documentary film structured using a three-act narrative framework. The findings reveal that the meaning of gender transformation is constructed through aesthetic elements such as movement, costume, and butterfly symbolism, and further reinforced through cinematographic techniques that shape visual narratives. This study demonstrates that documentary film functions not only as a medium of documentation but also as a cultural design practice that actively reframes public perception of gender and sacredness. Thus, the concept of Reframing Gender and Sacred Balance provides a critical framework for understanding gender transformation as an integral part of cultural equilibrium in Balinese tradition

Abstract

The cognitive gap between the younger generation and agricultural heritage in museums is often caused by the static nature of artifacts and the limitations of informational media in explaining complex mechanical logic. This research aims to design a 3D educational animation titled "Tenggala" as a digital interpretation medium for traditional Balinese plow artifacts at the Water Museum Mandala Mathika. Utilizing the User-Centered Design (UCD) method, this design integrates accurate mechanical reconstruction with the philosophical narrative of Tri Hita Karana. The design process focuses on a visual simplification strategy through the Nusantara Stylized approach to reduce the audience's cognitive load. The primary reconstruction focus covers four crucial components: the ergonomically modified Uga (neck yoke), the Camok (muzzle), the Tenggala (main body), and the connecting traction ropes. Evaluation results through data triangulation indicate that the animation is highly valid historically according to subject matter experts and functionally effective according to media experts, with minor notes on motion fluidity. Field trials involving 75 junior high school students showed a procedural understanding retention rate of 81.0% and an increase in affective interest in visiting the museum by 90.6%. These findings prove that the narrative-procedural simulation model in 3D animation successfully transforms static physical artifacts into "living knowledge." This research contributes significantly to the epistemological conservation strategy of Subak culture, while positioning visual communication design as a strategic agent in preserving the collective memory of agricultural societies in the digital age.

Abstract

Processed papaya products produced by KWT Mandiri in Air Satan Village have economic potential to be developed, but they are not yet supported by packaging design that strongly represents the product’s visual identity. This condition causes limited product attractiveness, brand recognition, and market competitiveness. Therefore, it is necessary to design packaging that not only functions as product protection, but also as a visual communication medium capable of building image and increasing consumer purchase interest. This study aims to develop packaging design that is aesthetic, communicative, and relevant to the characteristics of KWT Mandiri as a local producer, so that it can strengthen product identity and increase its selling value. The method used is a qualitative approach with Tim Brown’s Design Thinking model, which includes the stages of empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and testing. Data were collected through interviews, observation, and visual documentation. The results show that the design process produced a packaging concept that is in accordance with product characteristics and user needs through the development of several design alternatives and evaluation with KWT members. The selected design is considered more capable of presenting local identity, increasing visual attractiveness, and strengthening product image in the market. Thus, packaging design can be a strategic solution in supporting the development and sustainability of KWT Mandiri’s processed papaya business

Abstract

South Sumatra's traditional culinary delights are a reflection of local cultural values that contain historical, social meaning and the wisdom of the local community. Typical foods such as pempek, gulo puan, and srikaya cake not only function as consumption necessities, but also represent cultural identity passed down from generation to generation. However, in the midst of modernization and globalization, the existence of traditional culinary delights is facing threats in the form of shifts in public interest, minimal documentation, and a lack of systematic promotional strategies, which have the potential to erode long-established local cultural values. As an effort to solve the problem, this study comprehensively examines the role of traditional culinary delights as symbols of local cultural values as well as their potential in supporting the development of gastronomic tourism in South Sumatra. The method used was Systematic Literature Review (SLR) with the PRISMA 2020 protocol. The selection process was carried out systematically on relevant literature, and a total of 9 scientific articles published in the 2019–2025 period met the inclusion criteria for further analysis. The results of the study show that traditional South Sumatran culinary delights have strong cultural values, including the values of togetherness, tradition and creativity of the local community. Apart from that, it was found that culinary development requires product innovation, use of digital technology, and effective promotional strategies to remain relevant in the modern era. This study concludes that South Sumatra's traditional culinary delights not only act as cultural heritage that needs to be preserved, but are also strategic assets in strengthening regional identity and increasing economic potential through the gastronomic tourism sector

Abstract

The Bungong Jeumpa flower also called the Cempaka flower, is a typical Acehnese flower with a beautiful visual and fragrant smell. This flower has various benefits. The wood part can be used as an herbal medicine ingredient, while the flowers can be used as a fragrance ingredient in perfume and as a raw material for essential oils. Its many benefits have caused the population of this flower to decline. Creating Muslim clothing inspired by the Bungong Jeumpa flower can raise community awareness to maintain this flower's sustainability. The creation process uses a qualitative research method with descriptive analysis; by using this method, we can divert the visualization of the Bungong Jeumpa flower and understand the elements of Acehnese culture that will be combined to make the Cempaka flower motif. In addition, the creation method uses several stages, namely pre-design, design, manifestation, and presentation. Through this stage, we will create a Bungong Jeumpa flower batik motif that will be distilled with a touch of Acehnese culture with the addition of typical Acehnese ornaments after the batik-making process is continued with the realization process, namely the sewing process and also the presentation process as a form of evaluation that is useful for knowing things that need to be fixed and improved in the process of making Bungong Jeumpa batik motifs which will later be realized into Muslim clothing. The expected impact of this creation is to reintroduce Bungong Jeumpa as a distinctive cultural identity of Aceh to the wider community, especially to today’s younger generation
