Abstract

Stroke is a sudden neurological condition that causes local or widespread disturbances in brain function. Its impact includes physical limitations, disabilities, and psychological issues such as stress and depression. These often lead to patients becoming dependent on others and needing continuous assistance. Family support plays a crucial role in the recovery process, especially for stroke survivors. Families can assist by providing motivation and guidance so that patients can gradually perform daily activities independently. This study aims to examine the relationship between family support and the level of independence in self-care among stroke patients. The research used a quantitative design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 80 stroke patients were selected using the Accidental Sampling technique. The results showed that most patients (53.8%) received adequate family support. Meanwhile, 50% of the patients were in the category of moderate dependence in self-care activities. A Spearman correlation test showed a significant relationship between family support and self-care independence, with a correlation value of 0.640, indicating a strong positive relationship. Therefore, it is highly recommended that families provide continuous support and encouragement to help patients stay motivated, improve their independence in daily life, and optimize their recovery.

Abstract

The aging global population, projected to reach 22% by 2050, necessitates innovative healthcare technologies tailored to elderly users. While Medical Internet of Things (IoT) systems offer promising solutions for geriatric care, their development faces significant challenges including usability limitations and cybersecurity vulnerabilities. This scoping review examines how Design Thinking (DT) frameworks can be adapted to address the unique requirements of elderly-centric embedded systems development. A systematic scoping review following Joanna Briggs Institute methodology was conducted using SCOPUS database searches. Boolean operators combined keywords related to Design Thinking, elderly and Internet of Things. Inclusion criteria encompassed peer-reviewed studies (2015-2025) and grey literature addressing iterative design modifications for elderly populations, excluding non-English publications and systems without embedded sensor components. From 106 initial records, 10 studies met inclusion criteria after systematic screening. Key modifications to traditional DT phases included deeper user involvement, slower pacing, real-world validation, inclusive engagement strategies, co-design methodologies, and enhanced ethical considerations throughout development processes. Modified DT frameworks for elderly IoT development require prioritizing inclusive, context-aware, and iterative processes. Co-design approaches, real-world validation, and ongoing stakeholder support are essential for creating accessible, accepted, and effective solutions that address the complex physiological, cognitive, and socio-technical challenges faced by aging populations

Abstract

Cold compresses can help reduce swelling and inflammation, and help relieve pain. Pain is one of the signs and symptoms of fractures. Pain after surgery is one of the problems faced by patients. Damaged tissue due to surgical procedures that open the skin triggers pain impulses. The type of surgery Open Reduction Internal Fixation (ORIF) is one of the most widely performed treatments. Open Reduction Internal Fixation (ORIF) functions as a fixation tool or connector for broken bones to return them to their proper shape. The purpose of this study was to determine whether cold compresses could effectively reduce the severity of postoperative pain in fracture patients. This study used a quantitative research design with two groups undergoing experimental treatment (two groups pre-test and post-test). Pharmacological therapy in the control group was effective in reducing pain, the combination of pharmacological therapy and cold compresses in the experimental group provided a more optimal analgesic effect .

Abstract

The Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia reported that in, individuals aged 75 years and older represented the largest age group affected by stroke, followed by those aged 65-74 years. However, individuals under 45 years old are still at risk for non-hemorrhagic strokes. In West Java Province, with a population of 131,846, the stroke incidence rate is 11.4%. According to the Ministry of Health, Sumedang District reported 12,584 stroke cases, particularly in the Puskesmas (Community Health Centers) of Tanjungsari, Cimanggung, and Buahdua, which had the highest number of stroke patients. Functional hand exercises using Range of Motion (ROM), which involve various joint movements to enhance muscle strength and flexibility, are crucial for stroke patients experiencing reduced joint mobility. This study uses a quantitative non-parametric approach with an observational research design. The study population consisted of 20 elderly individuals over 60 years old, all of whom were included in the sample. Data was collected through an observation sheet specifically designed to assess ROM. Statistical analysis was performed using univariate and bivariate tests, along with the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. The results showed a significant increase in knowledge after the intervention. In the video media group, the average knowledge score increased from 37.51 to 57.21 (p < 0.001). In the leaflet media group, the average score increased from 30.56 to 45.10 (p < 0.001). Video media proved to be more effective than leaflets, with a greater increase in knowledge and a more uniform distribution of scores. Both media positively influenced the knowledge of stroke patients' families regarding ROM, but video media had a greater statistical and practical impact.

Abstract

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) poses a significant burden among older adults in rural communities due to limited health literacy, inadequate access to services, and deeply rooted cultural practices. Family involvement is often essential yet unsupported by structured interventions. Purpose: This study aimed to develop a culturally contextual Family Empowerment Model based on Family-Centered Care (FCC) to strengthen diabetes self-management among older adults with T2DM in rural settings. Methods: A descriptive qualitative design was employed, involving 21 participants (older adults, family caregivers, and health workers) from Sukamaju Village, Tasikmalaya, Indonesia. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions, and analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis framework. Results: Four main themes were identified: (1) Family as the first line of care, (2) Cultural and spiritual values in caregiving, (3) Need for empowerment and health literacy, and (4) Community health workers as bridging agents. These findings informed a structured empowerment model encompassing family roles, cultural alignment, health education, and community engagement. Conclusion: The FCC-based Family Empowerment Model offers a comprehensive, culturally appropriate approach to improve T2DM care in rural areas. It has the potential to enhance self-care capacity, reduce caregiver burden, and strengthen community-based health systems.

Abstract

Adolescents are an age group particularly vulnerable to stress due to academic, social, and emotional pressures. Unmanaged stress can negatively affect mental health and academic performance. This study aims to analyze stress levels among adolescents at Ciamis Senior High School 2 based on age and gender. A descriptive quantitative approach was used with purposive sampling. The research instrument was the DASS questionnaire, distributed to 861 respondents aged 14–18 years. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistical methods. The majority of respondents experienced moderate (33.57%), severe (22.42%), and extremely severe (16.61%) levels of stress. Adolescents aged 16–17 and females showed higher stress levels than other groups. The findings indicate that mid-adolescents and females are more prone to psychological pressure. This is consistent with Erikson's psychosocial development theory and the transactional stress model by Lazarus & Folkman. Most adolescents experience moderate to extremely severe stress, particularly those aged 16–17 and females. Contextual and gender-sensitive mental health interventions are needed in the school environment
