Abstract

This research is intended to identify the English-Indonesian translation procedures used in Instagram mobile application and to find outthe most dominant procedure used in translating words and phrases in Instagram mobile application from English to Indonesian version. The theoryof translation procedures used in this research was proposed by Vinay and Darbelnet. By applying qualitative method,it is intended to investigate aphenomenon on Instagram mobile application and the discussion was presented descriptively. To ensure the trustworthiness of the research, the datawere deeply observed by reading both English and Indonesian version. The findings show that there are five out of seven procedures are applied intranslating words and phrases in Instagram mobile application from English to Indonesian version. Those are (1) literal translation with theoccurrence of 42 out of 86 or 48.8%, (2) borrowing with the occurrence of 22 out of 86 or 25.6%, (3) transposition with the occurrence of 19 out of86 or 22.1%, (4) adaptation with the occurrence of 2 out of 86 or 2.3%, (5) equivalence with the occurrence of 1 out of 86 or 1.2%. The mostdominant translation procedure used in Instagram mobile application from English to Indonesian version is literal translation. Meanwhile, there wereno data found being translated from English to Indonesian using calque and modulation.

Abstract

This study is aimed at investigating factors enabling children acquiring Indonesian as second language (SLA). It was conductedin Suco Comoro, Aldeia 03, Dili, East Timor. The method used in this study was qualitative descriptive. Its research subjectswere children agedten to 15 years old whose first language is Tetun, but they are now acquiring Indonesian. The instruments used to get the data were observationsdan in-depth interviews. The results of the research show that there are two major factors that help the children acquire Indonesian, namely,intrinsic and extrinsic ones. The intrinsic factors are related to the children’s desires or willingness which stimulates them to use Indonesian.These factors encompass motivation, self-confidence, self-esteem and language attitude. In contrast, the extrinsic factors are related to outsidesupports that the children get, namely, from their environmentthat comprises their family relationship, peers, entertainment, and similarities ofsome vocabularies between their first language (Tetun) and Indonesian.It is worth noticing, however, that despite their relatively goodacquisition of Indonesia, they still havesome errors in their Indonesian utterences, a phenomenon known as interlanguage in SLA.

Abstract

This study is entitled “An Analysis of Error in Junior High School Students’ Conversation. It aims at answering the followingquestions (1) what are the errors in junior high school students’ conversation? (2) How many frequencies of those errors?. The method applied inthis study was descriptive qualitative method. The study was conducted at St. Familia Junior high school Sikumana, Kupang – East NusaTenggara. The method applied in this study was descriptive qualitative method. The subjects of the study were the second year students of St.Familia junior high school. In collecting the data, the researcher provided some topics chosen by the students to create a simple conversation.Smart phone was the instrument used to obtain the data. The result of the study shows that (1) Errors in students’ conversation consist of sometypes and the total frequency of error is 29. (2) The total frequency of misformation errors is 10; 3 errors made by pair one, 2 errors made by pairfour, 1 error made by pair five 2 errors made by pair six and the last two errors were made by pair seven and eight (3) The total frequency ofaddition errors is 5; 2 errors made by pair three, and the last 3 errors were made by pair four, six, and seven. (4) The total frequency ofmisordering errors is 3, made by pair four, five and six (4) Most of the students made omission errors, with the frequency of errors is 11; 5 errorsmade by pair one, 2 errors made by pair two, 2 errors made by pair seven, and the last 2 errors were made by pair six and eight (6) Most of thestudents omitted to be ”is” (7) The errors made by the students did not influence the flow of the conversation (8) Those errors are not significantsince the students only made 36,25% of errors from the total sentences they produced (80 sentences). Based on the result above, the researchersuggest (1) The students should learn on how to make a conversation focusing on grammar, especially on the omission and misformationbecause more errors occurred in these two types (2) The teacher of English in the school need to pay more attention to the students’ grammarwhen teaching.
