Abstract

In this article, we acknowledged that it is formal teaching and learning that has contributed much in creating a great civilization as we have it in the last few centuries. Yet, we argue that teaching and learning activities in our formal schools in general, during this Covid-19 pandemic in particular, are no longer that effective as shown by such facts as students who are not active in learning, who drop out of our school system, and who fail in schools and beyond. To overcome this problem, we insist that the following concepts be implemented in schools: 1. teaching should be no longer seen as transferring knowledge, skills, and values, but it has to be viewed as facilitation of students’ learning so that they can be indepent, healthy, and socially and environmentally great; 2. learning should not also be seen as memorizing what teachers teach, but to a process of real development within students themselves so that they can be independent with great characters in and after schooling; 3. dialogical education should be the basis of our formal education; 4. students’ potentials, interests, and needs should be the focusses of our formal education barbarslot ; and, 5. educational evaluation should be more comprehensively done, that is, it should focus on students’ cognition, skills, and affection, rather than on their cognitive aspect alone.

Abstract

The application of pragmatics often used in an English textbook, namely, Speech Act, is applied to state the action or intention of doing something indirectly so that the teachers, who are teaching the most students that did not really understand the various meanings from some conversations, should comprehend the context first by checking the type of speech act. The purposes of this research were to identify the types of speech acts found in the utterances of each conversation and to reveal the function of each speech act found in each utterance of every conversation contained in Bahasa Inggris (English): Think Globally Act Locally for Grade IX.The researcher employed the descriptive qualitative research. The most needed instrument was the researcher, and the secondary instrument was in the form of the data sheet. The primary source of the data was the textbook itself, and some downloaded books and journals are used to complete the data needed. For the data collection process, the researcher applied “observation”. The researcher also used the model of data analysis procedure named content analysis. For checking the trustworthiness of data, the researcher involved the four components called credibility, transferability, dependability, and confirmability. Based on the analysis conducted by the researcher, there were five types of speech act according to the Searle’s classification found in the textbook: assertive or representatives with 96 data (41.4%), both directives and expressive had the same number with 65 data (28.0%), commissives with 5 data (2.2%), and declarations with 1 datum (0.4%). For the second result, the researcher found that these five types of speech act with their own functions were all existed in two hundred and thirty-two utterances used by the speaker of each conversation in the textbook.

Abstract

In this article, the writer argues that to form the candidates or the young Friars to be a mature Friar Minor, it needs to have a good and qualified formator. He has to be trained in this field. Good character or has a special degree in other fields will not be enough to be a good formator. In order to carry out his ministry, he has to understand a suitable pedagogy and Christian anthropology of the human person. Moreover, in his training, he needs to understand the world of subconscious or unconscious which often blocks the process of self-transcendence in the candidates or the young Friars. Through his own formation to be a formator, he himself can know and embrace his own strengths and his vulnerability or limitation. This insight and experience enable him to form the candidates or the young Friars according to the spirit of the Order of Friars Minor.
