Abstract

This study examines the relationship between women and nature in Ahmad Tohari’s novel Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk through Susan Griffin’s ecofeminist perspective. The research is grounded in the view that women and nature are often positioned as objects of patriarchal domination, yet at the same time hold the potential for resistance and ecological recovery. The aim of this study is to describe four central aspects of Griffin’s thought, namely (1) women as guardians of nature, (2) the feminization of nature and the naturalization of women, (3) roar as a symbol of resistance, and (4) the ethics of care and the interconnectedness between women and the environment. The method employed is descriptive qualitative with reading-note techniques and interpretative analysis of the novel’s narrative. The findings show that the character Srintil represents both the female body and nature silenced by social structures, yet still preserves spiritual strength, ecological awareness, and a form of silent resistance. Srintil’s inner bond with the Dukuh Paruk landscape demonstrates the role of women as agents in restoring human–nature relations through the integration of cultural, spiritual, and ecological values. These findings reaffirm the relevance of ecofeminism as a critical perspective in Indonesian literary studies as well as a futurological foundation for envisioning a more just, empathetic, and sustainable society. Thus, the novel not only presents cultural and ecological narratives, but also provides insights into the strategic role of women in socio-ecological transformation.

Abstract

The emergence of “fragile masculinity” among Gen Z males on TikTok marks a significant cultural shift in emotional expression within digital spaces. This phenomenon is not merely a reflection of personal sentiment but embodies a complex interplay of platform affordances, algorithmic visibility, and symbolic gender performance. This study investigates how emotional expressions by young men on TikTok operate as performative acts influenced by platform logic and techno-cultural norms, contributing to the reconfiguration of digital masculinity.Using a qualitative multimodal content analysis of 30 TikTok videos tagged with emotional labels (e.g., #sadboy, #overthinker), this research integrates discourse analysis, visual semiotics, and user engagement metrics. Findings reveal three key dynamics: (1) emotional performativity is constructed through audiovisual aesthetics and shaped by algorithmic preferences; (2) vulnerability operates as both emotional capital and branding strategy; (3) validation mechanisms embedded in the platform incentivize the commodification of emotional expression. This study underscores how algorithmic governance shapes affective expression and generates gendered visibility. TikTok functions not only as a social media space but as an ideological arena where masculinity is rearticulated through stylized vulnerability. While this challenges traditional hegemonic norms, it also imposes emotional standards dictated by virality and platform capitalism.

Abstract

This article analyses the representation of eco-anxiety and narratives of ecological hope in two contemporary Southeast Asian Climate fiction texts: The Fires of Tanam Alkin (2023) by Sadie Noni from Indonesia and Sigwa: Climate fiction Anthology from the Philippines (2020) edited by Paolo Enrico Melendez and Kristine Ong Muslim. This research stems from a gap in studies that have thus far focused on Climate fiction works from the Global North, while literature from Southeast Asia has rarely been studied despite the region being one of the most vulnerable to the climate crisis. Using an affective ecocritical approach and comparative archipelagic literature, this study examines how ecological trauma and eco-anxiety are mediated by the colonial, geographical, and cultural contexts of the archipelago. The analysis shows that both texts present eco-anxiety not merely as a universal fear, but as an affective-political experience influenced by colonial memory, spiritual relations with nature, and structural ecological injustice. The Fires of Tanam Alkin emphasises the ecological trauma of indigenous communities due to industrial deforestation, while Sigwa shows the plurality of voices of Filipino coastal communities facing sea flooding, ecological migration, and loss of spiritual space. The main contribution of this research is the proposal of the concept of archipelagic eco-futures, namely a framework for reading Southeast Asian Climate fiction as a space for articulating trauma and imagining an ecological future. This article demonstrates that Climate fiction can expand ecological literacy in Southeast Asia, not only as a reflection of crisis, but also as a medium for education, cultural policy, and public literacy practices to build intergenerational ecological awareness. Thus, this research opens up a new direction for global ecocritical studies and affirms the role of literature as an imaginative laboratory for an equitable and sustainable ecological future.

Abstract

The Wakatobi language variation is a very interesting object of study because it has very diverse variations. The study aims at describing phonological variation, the process of phonology, and the grouping of Wakatobi language. The research data was collected through interviews and analyzed using generative dialectology theory, employing intralingual equivalence and lexical dialectometry methods. The data were sourced from informants at 25 observation points (villages) in Wakatobi Regency. Based on the description of phonological variations, vowels and consonants are found to vary regularly and sporadically. Related to the tracing of derived forms from the original form, in this study, several glosses are described that are phonologically different, such as the gloss `jenggot. The realization of derived forms from the original form undergoes one or several phonological rules, such as the derived forms ᶑaŋku and jaŋgu, each derived by the rule of changing the mediopalatal stop segment /j/ to the apicoalveolar stop /ᶑ/ and changing the voiceless stop segment /ŋk/ to the voiced stop segment /ŋg/ from the original or underlying form jaŋku. The results of dialectometric calculations show that the Wakatobi language in Wakatobi Regency can be grouped into four large groups, which are spread across four large islands in Wakatobi. The four groups are Wangi-Wangi, Kaledupa, Tomia, and Binongko. Meanwhile, in Wangi-Wangi it can be divided again into three groups, namely Waha, Kapota, and Mandati-Lia. The geography distance or position affects the differences of the percentage distance relationship among subdialects.

Abstract

his study aims to analyze the representation of Madurese masculinity in the folk tale Ke’ Lesap. The focus of the study lies in the values of courage, honor, the symbol of the celurit (traditional sickle), and social responsibility as key pillars of masculinity constructed in the story. This research uses a qualitative approach with descriptive-analytical methods. The primary data consists of the Ke’ Lesap text, collected through document studies, while secondary data is obtained from literature on masculinity and Madurese culture. The analysis technique applies content analysis to identify masculine themes in the story’s quotations, which are then interpreted using the theory of hegemonic masculinity (Connell & Messerschmidt, 2005) and cultural representation theory (Hall, 1997). The results show that masculinity in Ke’ Lesap is embodied through the main character’s courage and willingness to sacrifice for honor, the use of the celurit as a symbol of dignity, and the social role as a protector of community integrity. Masculinity in this tale emphasizes not only individual strength but also moral responsibility toward family and society. These values represent cultural heritage that continues to shape Madurese male identity. shape Madurese male identity.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the comparison of politeness strategies in digital communication between Indonesian and Western societies through a cross-cultural cyberpragmatic approach. The study focuses on how users from both cultures practice linguistic politeness in digital platforms such as social media and instant messaging applications. The method used is a qualitative study employing pragmatic discourse analysis techniques. Data consists of 90 utterances from conversations on Instagram (30 utterances), WhatsApp (30 utterances), and Twitter (30 utterances) from both cultural groups. The findings indicate that Indonesian society tends to use negative politeness strategies more explicitly, such as honorifics, apologies, and euphemisms, while Western society more frequently employs positive politeness emphasizing familiarity, recognition of individual identity, and the use of humor. These differences reflect underlying cultural values such as collectivism versus individualism. This study contributes to 1) understanding the dynamics of cross-cultural digital communication and its implications for the development of global communication ethics in the digital age, and 2) providing a crucial foundation for developing more effective cross-cultural digital communication guidelines, whether in business, diplomacy, or education contexts.

Abstract

The advance in artificial intelligence (AI) are significantly influencing various fields, including literature and creative writing. In Indonesia and the Philippines, AI is increasingly used to assist novice writers in creating fictional works. Employing a qualitative approach, the research utilizes data sources: fictional texts created by learners (high school and college students) using AI; the learners' perceptions of their creative process. The findings shows that the majority of submitted work was of good quality (65%), with 30% rated as "excellent." High-quality work contained little AI-generated content (maximum 12.3%), reflecting a strong personal contribution from the authors. Despite limited prior experience in narrative writing (87%), AI tools played a significant role in improving students' narrative skills, as evidenced by the assessed quality of their work. While nearly half of students found AI useful for improving expression (44%) and generating ideas (30%), most (86%) doubted its ability to make writing more enjoyable, and many (69%) expressed concerns about overreliance and a loss of originality. The findings highlight the importance of structured pedagogical guidance to help students leverage AI effectively while maintaining their unique voice and developing their narrative skills. The findings are expected to offer practical recommendations for educators, policymakers, and the writing community on ethically and effectively integrating AI in creative learning, particularly in Indonesia and Philippines.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the vocabulary used in naming magical objects in Javanese society as icons that carry connotative meanings related to myths. The Javanese believe in various types of magical objects, such as stones, metals, as well as parts of plants and animals, which function as markers. Each vocabulary referring to these objects forms an icon with specific meanings according to their magical attributes. This research employs a qualitative approach with Barthes’ semiotic analysis, encompassing three levels of meaning: denotative, connotative, and mythological. Data were collected through interviews, recordings, observations, and note-taking with seven informants—five from the general community and two knowledgeable about primbon and Javanese mysticism—as well as written sources from Primbon texts. The findings indicate that at the denotative level, the vocabulary of magical objects represents the literal meaning of the objects. At the connotative level, the objects carry unique characteristics such as shape, color, sound, or specific traits that draw attention. Meanwhile, at the mythological level, the vocabulary of magical objects is understood as a symbolic expression of Javanese beliefs, which are thought to possess supernatural power and magical functions for their owners.
