Abstract

Mental process (thinking activities) is a part of transitivity system, representing language meaning as a symbol or representation meaning. In translation, this meaning is the most important, determining whether or not a clause is translated correctly. It means a sentence with a mental-process predicate will be right only, if it is realized in the same process. This paper tries to prove this notion, by exploring a novel translation from Bahasa to English. It employs Halliday’s transitivity as a means to contrast a source text (T1) and a target text (T2).Based on the analysis, it is found out that some mental processes in the novel are translated into another process. Perception and affection are two subtypes of mental process which are translated into relational process and material process. The change into relational process is identified in many cases; though most of the data are translated into a the same mental process. This change is triggered by the strategies of modulation and transposition. Meanwhile, there is only a single case of change into a material process, which is resulted from the different realization, literal to metaphorical expression. Thus, this proves that the change of a process in a clause does not necessarily entail a change of meaning.

Abstract

This study is aimed at revealing the perception of the public over some politicians, particularly those involving in political debates broadcasted by TV stations, then their videos are uploaded in Youtube. The data are their coments on the politicians and their performances in the debates which usually presented peoples from contesting parties in the presidential election. The data were then analyzed using Appraisal theory (Martin & White, 2005), and interpreted through a perspective of discourse strategy (van Dijk, 2001). The finding has proved that the judgment is the most dominant appraisal elements (86%) employed by the public in evaluating the politicians’ behaviors in the debates. From a comparison, it seems that the incumbent people were evaluated better than the competitor. In general, the public from both contestants prefer to emphasize the other’s negative side.

Abstract

This study aims to disclose the interpersonal meaning in movie posters. This is a semiotic study, applying Royce's (2001) intersemiotic complementarity framework. It is to analyze visual and verbal codes in the posters. The poster is taken from the official website of Marvel Studio. They are  used as a medium for advertising the products. Based on the analysis, it can be identified that the visual contact is straighforward creating a demanding pose, a close-up mode presenting an emotional expression instead of the covered face, the frontal view emphasizing the bond of the character to the viewers, its eye-level presentation creating his equality to the on-lookers. All of this demanding pose was made clear by the situation informed by the verbal elements, that Spiderman had no way home. It is also a preview of the plot of the movie in this sequel. Thus, both semiotic elements in the poster have produced a unity of meaning, which puts the superhero as a part of the society in general, especially where he lives; he is not a different human being in spite of the super power he holds.

Abstract

This study discussed the animacy concept in Javanese. This is to show how the animacy concept is reflected on pronouns and parts of the body, and behavioral verbs (agentive) between human, animal, and thing. This is a descriptive qualitative study employing the data from Javanese compared to English and Indonesia to clarify the animacy concept. The theoretical perspective used to analyze is the animacy concept from Comrie (1989). The analysis reveals that Javanese has no pronoun for non-human (animal and things), as the case in Indonesian. Meanwhile, English has it and there are pronouns for third person non-human, singular and plural. However it does not distinguish between animals and things. Thus, Javanese and Indonesia apply animacy hierarchy in their pronoun system. Another hierarchy is seen in the words to refer to body parts. It is only Javanese showing distinct characteristics; it uses high variants to refer to the human body. The same case is also found in the verbs (action) done by the human agent. Meanwhile two other languages do not apply this animacy hierarchy. Thus, the animacy hierarchy has a strongest influence on Javanese grammatical system, compared to the other two.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the interpersonal meaning and the intersemiotic complementary in public service advertisement of selected violence against children prevention campaign. Employing Royce’s intersemiotic complementary framework (2001), it analyzed how the visual and verbal signs work together to create common messages sent to the public as viewers/readers. Based on the analysis, it is found out that the five aspects of visual features --visual contact, social distance, involvement, power relation, and modality—have worked together to construct the interpersonal meaning. The close up shot showing the detail of the bruises on the nose emphasizing a high modality; it represents a high naturality. The boy in bruises looks directly at viewers’ eyes, demanding a help from them. The equal frame on the picture tells the readers that the boy can be part of every one’s life. It may happen in any place and the readers are asked to do take an action. In terms of verbal features, the declarative sentences are used to inform the facts. It is to highlite the clear message in the image, saying that such a violence may be taken by a mother who inherits the boy’s nose—the one who actually loves him very much, but the situation has changed her a lot. Through the way the producers organize the verbal text the readers may take their action to stop the child abuse. Both visual and verbal modes are contributes to convey interpersonal meaning. The intersemiotic complementary in the advertisement is realized interpersonally through the meanings projected in both modes through the reinforcement of address.

Abstract

The novel Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk (RDP) came out in 1982, when the new order regime was still firmly established. One of the important criticisms in the work was the 'incorrect' handling of communism by the government at that time following the eruption of the G30S/PKI history. The author of the novel tries to bring a different view of the issue. This paper tries to present how the original Banyumas personified the political turmoil-how the laypeople interpreted the events that had consumed them as victims, or the sacrificed. Based on the recurrent reading of the Indonesian-language RDP novel and Javanese language Banyumasan, the authors firmly state that the people of Dukuh Paruk are merely victims of the outside world. People of Dukuh Paruk have no idea what they have to do, other than that they want to perpetuate the tradition they are proud of i.e. Ronggeng. Nor do they blame or think that they are people outside of those who have committed crimes against them. The disaster that befall them is none other due to their mistakes that they do not run the rituals that must be done before performances of ronggeng. The old people of Dukuh Paruk also realized that the disaster called pageblug had been signaled by the appearance of the latitude of the cubes (comets), and they had ignored the cue. Thus, pageblug should be accepted. Against the innocence of clean thought, the author asserts that something is wrong with them, systematically practiced by the regime at that time. He agreed that the coup was false; but the way in which the state deals with such problems is also unjustifiable. The state has clearly punished many Indonesians without trial, and killed thousands of innocent people.

Abstract

Sastra wangi or fragrant literature is a call to the literary works composed by female writers. It explores about the life of female characters, and questions about the settled constellation between man and woman in life. The works reflect the woman worldview, especially Indonesian woman, about the realities in the society, particularly on the unfair patriarchal structure positioning the woman in a subordinate level, including in the issue of sexuality. By employing many vulgar words, the works are regarded as a way taken by the writers to protest the unfair world. This article tries to give a glance about the literary phenomenon in Indonesia by relying on the media sources as the first hand catching the actual things. It also sees the genre from some perspectives: feminism, capitalism, and the literary theory.
