The language, be it verbal or non-verbal, has been the primary medium of human interactions to take place. However, there still seems to be a little attempt for a thorough investigations in understanding problematic issues that may emerge because of the language. Issues in Applied Linguistics & Language Teaching (IALTEACH) aims at bringing together scholars whose interests fall upon the areas of applied linguistics and language teaching to publish their scholarly articles in IALTEACH. As the term applied implies, this journal combines interdisciplinary discussions on language issues that would bridge not only systematic investigations of the language , but also the theories, research methods, and practices within the scope of applied linguistics and language teaching. Therefore, the contributions are welcome in the following areas (but not limited to) of study; current trends in ELT, language learning & acquisitions, teaching media &technology, linguistic aspects of language learning & teaching, English for specific purposes, and Englishes in Southeast Asia.

Abstract

Technology is used almost in all fields, including education. Applying technology in education can be done through a model called online learning. However, not all institutions have applied online learning for their students. Tenuous relationship between students and teachers, lack of face-to-face meeting, and undisciplined students are problems faced in conventional method. This research aims to conduct an online learning using Edmodo for 71 students at grade X in two classes in Yos Sudarso High School. This research utilized quantitative and qualitative experimental method. Observation and questionnaires were data collection techniques used for this research. The result proved that Edmodo is really best to be applied for online learning because it is easy to use. It also gained students’ satisfaction during the implementation. However, some problems were also encountered such as students’ lack responsibilities in learning, missed notification, and more assignments. This research also provides suggestions for further related research.

Abstract

Several problems appear in the educational field, one of which is teachers’ personality. Teacher’s personal trait is considered to be essential because it can affect students’ motivation in learning. However, some teachers remain unaware of its significance. It was evident in the students’ statements stating that they often had to learn with moody teachers who, as a result, ruined their learning motivation. The present study aims to explore the students’ perspectives on the EFL teacher’s personalities that influence the students’ motivation. To achieve the objective, the study utilized case study design in which the data were collected through semi-structured interview conducted to six senior high school students. The data were then analyzed by following Miles and Huberman’s (1994) framework. The results showed that all respondents shared agreement on the teacher’s personalities that they prefered. They felt happy and motivated when they learned with humble, friendly, kind, caring, patient, and humorous teachers. The results of this study may help the EFL teachers consider their personality as one of the vital aspects that could affect the students’ learning motivation. EFL teachers should pay more attention to their attitudes towards the students. In addition, the results suggest that policy makers should formulate rules that encourage teachers to not only focus on their hard skills but also their soft skills such as good personalities.

Abstract

Linguistics is the science that tries to understand the language from the perspective of its internal structure. The affix is the one of part I the linguistics study. The affix word is one of the vital things in a grammar. An affix serves to form meaning in a word. A suffix is an affix that is placed at the end of the word. This study aims to analyze the existence of the suffix in Astrid S.'s "Laeave Beautiful" album. This album has 16 songs. In analyzing the suffix, the researcher uses Yule's (2020) theory. Qualitative descriptive method and content analysis as the instrument is used in this research to find the valid data. The result, researchers found 74 words that use the suffix. with six types of suffixes; -s / -es, -ed, -fu, -ing, -ly and -ize. The researchers also classified these suffixes into derivational and inflectional groups. The researchers found that there are 51 inflectional types and 23 derivational types.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has made the government to issue a policy that all teaching and learning activities are carried out through online learning. Changing the face-to-face learning process into an online learning process is a challenge for teachers. Teachers are required to present an interactive online learning process like they usually do in face-to-face learning. This study aims to examine the students’ perception of using media mentimeter and google classroom in learning listening at Bina Sarana Informatika University. This research was conducted using quantitative methods. The sample of this study was third semester students in the listening for specific purposes course . Data collection was done through questionnaire. The results of this study are expected to be a reference for teachers in choosing media in online learning and for improving the quality of the online learning.

Abstract

Abstract This research was aimed to find out: (1) Types of linguistic errors that students of the English education department of Miftahul ‘Ulum Tanjungpinang commit in writing a thesis, especially in the background section. (2) The most and least dominant linguistic errors were found based on Dulay’s surface strategy taxonomy theory in students of English education department of Miftahul ‘Ulum Tanjungpinang thesis, especially in the background section. This research used a mixed-method (qualitative and quantitative. The qualitative method was used to describe 4 types of linguistic errors based on Dulay’s theory such as addition, omission, misformation, and misordering. While the quantitative method was used to calculate the data include the 4 types of linguistic errors. The data collected in this research were analyzed by using Dulay’s theory and percentage formula. There were 110 students’ theses which were the populations of the data and 10 of them were the samples. The result of the research revealed that there are 128 sentences were contained linguistic errors. The 128 sentences were classified based on 4 types with each presentation. They are addition (11%), omission (30%), misformation (59%), and misordering (1%). Based on the result it can be concluded that misformation was the highest percentage of types of linguistics errors were found in students’ thesis background. Where such errors included subject-verb agreement (31 errors), spelling (18 errors), preposition (14 errors), pronoun (5 errors), capitalization (4 errors), and article (3 errors).
