Abstract

Background: In the oral cavity there are countless microorganisms, about 40% of which are Candida albicans as normal flora. The use of removable orthodontic appliances in the oral cavity greatly inhibits cleanliness and increases the number of retentive areas in the oral cavity resulting in risk factors of increased C.albicans. Binahong leaves contain many active compounds that are antimicrobial. Objective: To determine the effect of binahong leaf extract in inhibiting the growth of C.albicans in patients using removable orthodontic appliances. Method: Laboratory experimental research was conducted with the design of the posttest only control group design involving 5 samples of removable orthodontic appliances which were swabbed to obtain C.albicans, then each tested with binahong leaf extract concentrations of 10%, 30%, 50%, 70% and the control group. Next is the inhibitory test. Results: The greater concentration of the Binahong leaf extract, the greater the diameter of the resistance. Conclusion: Binahong leaf extract has an effect on inhibiting the growth of C.albicans in patients using removable orthodontic appliances.

Abstract

Introduction: Malocclusion is a dental health problem that has a high prevalence rate. According to WHO, the periodic ranking is below dental caries and periodontal disease. The prevalence in Indonesia reaches 80%. Orthodontic treatment requires intensive time to control every month. This is an obstacle forcertain patients who have busy schedules and great distances from the clinic to the dentist clinic. In this context, orthodontics was invited to go forward using tele-orthodontic devices which is a term used for long-distance orthodontic treatment through information technology media, not through direct contact with individual contacts. Objective: To examine more deeply about tele-orthodontics as a solution in the treatment of malocclusion. Discussion: Dental MonitoringTM is a software-based program that enables practitioners to monitor the development of patient care remotely. Another advantage is closer management through remote monitoring, saving time, transportation costs, and increasing patient comfort. Conclusion: Tele-orthodontics can be used as a current solution to treatment for malocclusion.

Abstract

Background: Malocclusion is a condition that is not in accordance with the process of growth and development that can be seen with the disharmony of the relationship between the teeth, relationship of jaw arches, face and overall. The 2D:4D ratio can be corelated with hormones that have a role in growth. Therefore, ratio 2D:4D can be used as an early marker of disease, intelligence, reproductive ability and probability of jaw growth patterns. Objective: To know the relationship between the ratio of second and fourth digit lengths (2D:4D) and the types of malocclusion on the students of Unismuh Junior HighSchool. Method: This observational descriptive study with purposive sampling was performed on students aged 13-15 years old with total sample 100 people.Malocclusion examination was conducted to identify the types of Angle and Dewey malocclusion. A digital vernier caliper was used to measure a ratio between2D and 4D. The data were analyzed using chi-square test. Result: 96 people had Class 1 (2D<4D=77, 2D>4D=19), 4 people had Class 2 (2D>4D=3, 2D<4D=1), Class 1 type 1 of 34 people (2D< 4D=29, 2D>4D=5), Class 1 type 2 of 3 people (2D<4D=2, 2D>4D=1) and Class 1 type 6 of 16 people (2D<4D=12,2D>4D=4). Conclusion: There was no relationship between the ratio 2D:4D with the types of Angle and Dewey malocclusion.

Abstract

The loss of teeth is a problem that often causes mastication, phonetic, and esthetic interferences. The use of removable partial denture (RPD) with clasp is often unsatisfactory for patients from functional and aesthetic aspects. Retention and stabilization must be considered in making RPD. In the case of free-end dentures, which fixed dentures (FD) is contraindicated, another option is a hybrid prosthesis that combines a RPD with FD using precision attachment. Clasp used as denture retention can be replaced with precision attachment to produce better retention.

Abstract

Introduction: Complete denture serves to replace natural teeth, improve aesthetics, mastication, speech function and protect periodontal tissue. Over time of its using, denture becomes loose, so it is not comfort to use. The loose of dentures can be caused by resorption of residual ridges, systemic diseases and heavy occlusion loads result in lose of retention and stability. Management of loose dentures can be performed by relining or even rebasing the dentures. Purpose: to discuss the indication and contraindication of relining and rebasing to restore the retention and stability of loose dentures. Conclusion: Clinician must understand the indications, contraindications and materials used for the relining and rebasing procedure.
