Abstract

Background: Orthodontic treatment is closely related to the physiological changes of the pulp and periodontal tissues, with no exception to the non-vital tooth. That tooth is having significant physiological changes due to the absence of vascularisation problems, which would affect the solitary structures around the tooth. Orthodontic treatment in non vital tooth is such a challange to the dentists in determining treatment planning, it was all caused by physiology and pathology changing that might appear during or even after the orthodontic treatment. Objective: Explains about orthodontic treatment in a non vital tooth after having an endodontic treatment. Conclusion: Orthodontic treatment in a non-vital tooth showed a good prognosis because of the absence of cementoblast which is inducted by pulp vascularisation. Beside that, there are some risks that might appear after the tooth being treated by orthodontic treatment, those are pseudooverfilling, reactivation of the previous lesion, the incrase of partial/total regression, the increase of endodontic lesion, apical root resorption, ankylosis, or even dental fracture.

Abstract

Background: Epulis fibromatosa is a hyperplastic reaction of fibrous connective tissue due to chronic stimulation or irritation, such as sharp parts of the retained root. The mass was pedunculated, pale pink in color, solid consistency, the boundary was firm, and was not easy to bleed with no pain. Aim:Discuss the management of giant fibromatous epulis by excision. Case: A 49-years-old man came to Dental Hospital of Hasanuddin University, complained of gums that had enlarged and disturbed while chewing so that the patient had difficulty to close his mouth. The masses appeared since 3 years ago, initially small and gradually grew to the size 10x5x7 cm, solid consistency, well-defined, not easy to bleed, and not painful. The mass has been treated by excision and removal of tooth 37 in general anesthesia. Discussion: Patient was temporarily diagnosed with suspected fibromatous epulis and the presence of retained root, probably caused by chronic irritation from sharp parts of retained root. Fibrous connective tissue hyperplasia is a benign soft tissue tumor as the response to local irritants. Conclusion: The excision of fibromatous epulis was carried out to remove the mass and eliminating the predisposed factor.

Abstract

Introduction: Oral diseases with high prevalence in Indonesia are caries. Dental caries takes months or years to develop in most people. It is influenced by theconsumption of food sugars, salivary flow, fluoride exposure, and preventive procedures such as tooth brushing and routine examination. Aim: Relationship between body mass index with dental caries and the effect of socioeconomic status in rural and urban in Indonesia in the year of 2018 Method: Survey ofpilot pathfinder conducted in urban and rural areas of Gowa District, South Sulawesi, Indonesia in 2018 with a total number of subjects 416 people aged 11-14 years old. Result: Based on age, subjects in urban areas were highest at age 12 years (44.8%), whereas in rural area the most subjects were at the age of 11 years (37.9%). Based on sex, subjects in urban areas were 104 men (49.5%) and women 106 people (50.5%), while in rural areas were men 105 people (51.0%) and women 101 (49.0%). Discussion: There are conflicting findings from research on the population of adolescents in Gowa. In urban area of Somba Opu subdistrict, there is a relationship between BMI category and revenue to caries, whereas in rural area of Pattalassang subdistrict, there is a cor-relation between BMI category and occupation on caries. Conclusion: Overall BMI associated with dental caries. Although statistically significant the caries prevalence and experience were lower in overweight children in both the urban and rural areas of Gowa District.

Abstract

Background: Dental implant is an optional way to replace edentulous area by surgically placing it into soft tissue or jawbone as a root substitute to hold dentures. Placement of the implant, so that the gingival tissue position will restore aesthetics and function properly. Objective: To discuss the importance of prosthetic planning for implant-supported dentures in the aesthetic zone. Case: Sample case of a patient who had previously subjected to dental surgery for implant placement and placement of a crown on tooth 11. The patient reported poor aesthetics due to gingival retraction and changes on the surface of the ceramic material. After proper planning, the prosthesis is reproduced, with the selection of new components and periodontal surgery using modification techniques for handling soft tissue. Nine months postoperatively, patients had better gingival alignment and reported aesthetic and functional satisfaction. Conclusion:Prosthetic planning to implant-supported dentures in the esthetic zone is very important. Several factors have contributed to the success of the treatment, such as implant position, soft tissue morphology, dental aesthetics, and biomechanics of the prosthetic structure. Complications that can occur after implant pla-cement are gingival recession which will primarily interfere with the esthetics of the anterior teeth so that interventional periodontal surgery is required.

Abstract

Orthodontic movement of a tooth or group of teeth occurs due to the application of the force applied by active components and these acting forces always generate reciprocal forces of the same magnitude but opposite in direction which follows Newton’s third law. Basically, anchoring management aims to keep the force used light and increase anchoring resistance, so that the gear that is expected to move while the teeth that are not expected to move can be held or minimized. During treatment, anchorage loss must be detected immediately, the cause searched, and dealt with as soon as possible so that no more severe errors occur so that the treatment results can be as good as possible. The purpose of this paper is to examine how to manage anchoring problems in orthodontic treatment using removable appliance, especially active removable appliance so that treatment results achieve satisfactory results.

Abstract

Caries can be caused by various factors such as the amount of salivary flow, salivary acidity, etc. It needs to be known by chewing gum with xylitol and sucrose are most excellent to preventing caries in children. This study aimed to determine the difference of salivary flow while chewing xylitol gum and sucrose bubble gum in students of SD Inpres Toddopuli Makassar. This qualitative research with quase experimental studies method is the pre- and post-test design with control group. The sample criteria were children aged 9-12 years, has a superficial and media dental caries at least three teeth, did not another chewing gum about 60 minutes before examination, and willing to be research samples. As many as 30 samples each in grades 4, 5, and 6 chew xylitol gum on the first day and chew sucrose gum on the secong day of 5 minutes each. Saliva was collected on a cen-trifuge tube, observed amount and acidity of saliva. The results showed significants difference in the amount of salivary flow and acidity between xylitol chewing gum and sucrose chewing gum, namely there was different in amount of salivary flow (0.002) and for salivary pH value (0.000). It was concluded that children who chewed xylitol gum produce more saliva than sucrose chewed gum and sucrose gum had higher acidity than xylitol gum.
