Abstract

Maxillofacial fracture in elderly patients mostly related to age-related changes and systemic pathologic conditions. However, traumatic injuries in the elderlyhave been increasing in recent years; this is due to increased active life span with advances in medicine that result in a higher percentage of older people in the population. This article ia a review of oromaxillofacial frac-ture in elderly that published since the last 10 years obtained through the search of the electronic database PubMed and Google Scholar, then selected as many as six studies based on the treatment of oromaxillofacial fracture in elderly. Based on the selec-ted literature that has been reviewed, falls were responsible for the majority of fractures in the elderly group. The fracture loca-tions are varied but mostcommon site is zygomatic complex, nasal bone, and condylar. The results of this literature review high-light that majority of elderly patients are treated without surgical procedures. It is concluded that the treatment of maxillofacial trauma in elderly patients is often challenging, as elderly patients require specific attention and multidisciplinary collaboration in the diagnosis and sequencing of trauma treatment.

Abstract

Erythema multiform (EM) is an acute and recurrent hypersensitivity reaction that occurs on the skin and oral mucosa. EM's risk factors include viral infections, drugs, radiation, autoimmune diseases, foodstuffs, and chemicals. Various bee products such as propolis, honey, and bee pollen are believed to have therapeutic effects for various diseases but can trigger allergic reactions. A 31-year-old female patient came to the Oral Medicine clinic with swollen and bleeding lips 2 weeks ago. The patient initially felt her lips were dry and exfoliate, then smeared her lips with honey but they became swollen and painful. The patient felt itchy on hertongue after consuming honey a few months ago. Clinical examination showed edema accompanied by erosive lesions, and ulcers, tend to bleed hemorrhagic crusts on the upper lip to the upper labial mucosa and lower lip. Laboratory examination showed IgE titer increased fourfold, IgG and IgM anti-HSV-1 were negative. The diagnosis was erythema multiforme. The therapy given is 0.9% NaCl compress on the lips using sterile gauze, applying topical corticosteroids to the lips, and educating the patient to not use and consume honey or other bee products. The patient recovered without scarring after two weeks of therapy. It was concluded that honey can be a risk factor for the emergence of EM, so it is very important to eliminate risk factors for the management and prevention of EM recurrence.

Abstract

Transverse strength is the resistance of the denture base to the load, pressure, and thrust when the mouth is functioning and is also influenced by some chemicalsas solvents, such as those contained in food, beverages and denture cleaning materials. This study was intended to determine the transverse strength of heat polymerized acrylic resin (HPAR) in a solution of basil leaf extract. The experimental design of this study was a post-test only control group with a sample size of 24 which was divided into 4 groups. Samples were soaked in sterile distilled water for 24 hours and then immersed in a solution of 25%, 50%, and 75% basil leaf extract, as well as sterile aquadest; for 8 days. The transverse strength was measured using a universal testing machine. Data were analyzed by one-way Anova and tested with least significant difference (p<0.05). The results showed that the transverse strength of the HPAR plate immersed in basil leaf extract decreased at a concentration of 25% and 50% and the lowest was at a concentration of 75%. It was concluded that basil leaf extract could decrease the transverse strength of HPAR.

Abstract

Several improvements to the metal cast framework have been suggested since resin-bonded fixed partial dentures was introdu-ced. Essentially, there are twotypes of retainer designs based on retention namely macromechanical retention with a perforated retainer commonly referred to as Rochette bridge and micromechanical retention derived from the etched metal cast retainer called as Maryland bridge. This study is aimed to compare the tensile bond strength of anadhesive cement resin to an etch and perforated resin-bonded bridge. Using experimental laboratory design, the sample tested consisted of 10 plates Ni-Cr alloy,13 mm in diameter and 1 mm in thickness were divided into two treatment groups; five plates were perforated, and five plates were etched using Met-Etch Gel. Tensile strength was determined using an Ametek Llyod Instrument. The result showed that the strength of resin adhesive cement on the metal surface of alloyNi-Cr used etch higher than perforated. Statistical analysis used student t-test recorded t-test 2.75 and p-value 0.0125, so it said significant differences becausep-value was smaller than 0.05. This study showed that etch cast metal retainers were more retentive than perforated design.

Abstract

Gingival biotype is described as the thickness of the gingiva in the faciopalatal or faciolingual dimension. Aesthetic is highly con-sidered in anterior teeth. A 35-year-old woman came with a complaint that the color of gingiva of her front teeth was slightly dark after root canal treatment 10 years ago. Clinical and radiographic examinations of the upper left lateral incisor showed no signs of inflammation or infection. Biotype evaluation was carried out with a calibrated UNCprobe using the transparency me-thod. Subepithelial connective tissue graft (SCTG) with tunneling technique was performed on the gingiva to thicken the gingi-va around the dark tooth root. SCTG autograft is a stable gingival graft material if the goal of surgery is to thicken the gingiva, so it remains the gold standard in areas that require esthetics.

Abstract

Introduction: Plaque is the main factor that causes dental and oral health problems, one of which is gingivitis. Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gingival tissue and is often found in children, adolescents, and adults. The peak of the highest prevalence of gingivitis occurs in adolescence (90%). Maintaining dental and oral hygiene can be done mechanically by brushing your teeth, but mechanical action will be more effective if combined with chemical action, namely gargling. Forest honey solution is a natural liquid produced by honey bees and is beneficial for dental and oral problems. So, the purpose of this study was to determine the effect of gargling a solution of forest honey on plaque index and gingivitis in the oral cavity of adolescents. The research uses a literature studymethod by reviewing nationally published journals. The results showed that forest honey has four factors such as organic compounds, osmotic pressure, hydrogen peroxide, and pH. Forest honey are antibacterial and antioxi-dant so that it helps reduce pathogenic bacteria in the oral cavity. It is concluded that gargling a solution of forest honey is effect-tive in reducing plaque and gingivitis index scores in the oral cavity of adolescents.
