Abstract

Maxillofacial prosthetic materials are used to replace parts of the face that are missing due to infection, disease and trauma. Ap-pearance and some functions can be restored with maxillofacial prostheses and improve the patient's quality of life. To achieve these functions, material selection is an important aspect of treatment planning. The literature review discusses the materials that can be used to make maxillofacial prostheses and how to select them by reviewing textbooks, clinical studies and articles from electronic databases Pubmed, Wiley, Google Schoolar with some keywords. The most common materials currently used for ma-nufacturing intraoral and extraoral prostheses are polymers and exhibit almost all the desired physical, biological and clinical properties although to date, none of the commercially available materials fulfil all the requirements of an ideal material. It is con-cluded that current maxillofacial prosthesis materials do not fully fulfil the required needs. There are advantages and disadvan-tages of certain materials so continued innovation to obtain new materials and further research needs to be done.

Abstract

Dentures worn by elderly become loose over time, and can cause denture stomatitis, because there are many colonies of Can-dida albicans spp in the oral cavity, which can cause inflammation. The purpose of this literature review is to compare the ana-lytical methods used and discuss the best treatment method for denture stomatitis cases. A literature search was conducted using Elsavier, Pubmed, Semantic Scholar and other sources with the keywords Candida albicans and denture stomatitis. It was found that there are many causes of denture stomatitis, most commonly due to Candida spp. It was concluded that denture stomatitis can be cured by eliminating predisposing factors, soaking in antiseptic solutions and the use of antifungal drugs.

Abstract

Cytokines are small proteins released by many different cells in the body, including in the immune system that coordinate the bo-dy's response to fight infection and trigger inflammation. In Covid-19 patients, a cytokine storm attacks lung tissue and blood ves-sels. The condition causes the small air sacs in the lungs to fill with fluid, making it difficult for patients to breathe. This literature review discusses the effect of immunosuppressant drugs on Covid-19 patients to prevent cytokine storms, in relation to periodon-tal tissue health. A total of 25 sources were collected from various electronic search engines, and four articles were analysed using article synthesis tables. Long-term use of immunosuppressants will manifest in the oral cavity. It is concluded that patients with Covid-19 to prevent cytokine storms can be treated with the use of immunosuppressants, but their long-term use has an effect on periodontal tissue health.

Abstract

Edentulous patients with class II and class III jaw relationships require modifications in management. This jaw relationship is close-ly related to the fabrication of artificial teeth in a complete denture. The relation of the mandible to the maxilla and cranium is very important in GTL treatment as there are no remaining teeth. This literature review discusses the concept of occlusion used in class II and class III jaw relationships, namely lingual occlusion, which is an attempt to maintain aesthetics with the advantage of anatomical shape while maintaining mechanical freedom in non-anatomical shapes. The use of anatomical artificial teeth in the upper jaw and modified with non-anatomical and semi-anatomical artificial teeth in the lower jaw. It is concluded that good skills and knowledge are needed in treating to replace tooth loss and tissue structure, the success of complete denture treatment of class II and class III jaw relationships can be achieved by paying attention to harmonious denture occlusion.

Abstract

Periodontal tissue health is fundamental to any type of dental treatment. One of them is orthodontic treatment. Orthodontic treat-ment can usually cause periodontal problems such as gingival inflammation, gingival recession, gingival pockets and bone des-truction. This literature review discusses several types of periodontal treatments that can be performed before, during or after ortho-dontic treatment using PubMed, Wiley and Google Scholar sources. Several studies stated that periodontal treatment can be performed before, during or after orthodontic therapy. It was concluded that orthodontic treatment usually encounters problems in patients with periodontal disease and can be a predisposing factor for the onset of periodontal disease. The risk factors for this condition are influenced by oral hygiene, control time, and duration of orthodontic treatment. The periodontal-orthodontic care linkage is very important before, during or after orthodontic therapy.

Abstract

Introduction: Self-inflicted traumatic ulcers are oral lesions caused by the patient himself, that can be caused to intentional bad habits, accidents or habits thatoccur without realizing it. Self-inflicted lesions are present in about 75% of the head and neck area, and can be caused by biting tissue in the oral cavity or inserting foreign bodies and nails into the oral mucosa. Case: It is reported a case of traumatic self-inflicted ulcer in a 4-year-old child. This patient was diagnosed with intra-abdominal tumors and plan-ned to undergo surgery. During the preoperative treatment, the patient experienced anxiety and repeatedly bit and sucked the lip and cheek area. Clinically, white plaques and ulcers were seen with a wide elevation in the lip and cheek area. Management: Against patients conducted 0.9%NaCl compress 3 times a day and were given positive suggestions to reduce anxiety. Conclu-sion: In addition to topical medication for treatment of self-inflicted traumatic oral lesion, it is also necessary to give adequate care from health personnel and positive suggestion to reduce preoperative anxiety in pediatric patient who will undergo surgery.

Abstract

Heat cured acrylic (HCA) resin has a rough, hard and porous surface. This causes food scraps to stick frequently and makes it easier for Candida albicans to grow. Lime peel extract (citrus aurantifolia) is a natural ingredient that is antifungal. The pur-pose of this study was to determine the growth of C.albicanscolonies on heat cured acrylic dentures in 40% immersion of lime peel extract. The HCA resin plate samples were 40 samples, namely the 40% lime peel extractconcentration group, the negative control group (akuades) and the positive control group which were soaked for 2 hours and 6 hours. The design of this study was a post-test only control group with data analysis using the one-way Anova test. The results showed that each group was normally distributed and the variance data was heterogeneous (p>0.05). It is concluded that 40% lime peel extract can inhibit the growth of C.albicans colonies on HCA resin plates.

Abstract

Introduction: Bioactive dental cement material is widely used in root canal treatment in order to provide long lasting result of the root canal treatment. The test ofmechanical properties on this bioactive dental cement material is a diametrical tensile test. The purpose of this study was to examine the diametrical tensile strength (DTS) of bioactive dental cement materials found in Indonesia. Methods: Specimens of bioactive dental cement material are disc-shaped, 6 mm in diameter, 3 mm in height which were divided into 2 groups; Group I is Maarc MTA and Group II is MTA plus white cerkamed, each group contains 4 speci-mens. Mechanical properties test was carried out using Universal Testing Machine (UTM), analyzed with one-way Anova. Re-sults: The DTS mean of Group Iwas 2.48564 N/mm2 and Group II of 7.872175 N/mm2; significantly different (f count: 0.065). Conclusion: MTA white plus cerkamed has higher DTS than Maarc MTA.

Abstract

Background and objective: Tooth extraction is a dental procedure of removing a tooth from its socket, causing an injury. Dental socket wounds that are directlyexposed to the oral environment allow the entry of pathogenic micro-organisms that can cause post-extraction bleeding, alveolar osteitis, oroantral fistula, and others. Recent studies have shown that the use of mussel adhe-sive proteins (MAPs) without sutures or staples can accelerate socket wound closure or stopbleeding after tooth extraction. Con-clusion: MAPs that have been synthesized into injectable citrate-based mussel-inspired bioadhesive have the potential assurgical sealants after tooth extraction because they have strong adhesive properties in wet environments, good esthetics, atraumatic, and short operating time.
