Abstract

Breathing is a vital process for the human body that occurs normally through the nose. One of the most common oral habits in children is mouth breathing. Mouthbreathing is a respiratory dysfunction that affects approximately 10-15% of the pediatric po-pulation. The etiology is multifactorial, with the most common cause is obstruction in the nasopharynx. Mouth breathing has wide-ranging consequences and involves different areas of the body, including the mouth, craniofacial development, upper and lower airway. This paper is aimed to determine the impact of mouth breathing on dentocraniofacial changes in children; using literaturestudy by collecting sources that relevant to the topic, processing data using the matrix method, and synthesizing infor-mation from journals that are used as references. It was concluded that mouth breathing habit in the children population have an impact to dentocraniofacial changes.

Abstract

Orthodontic treatment is a topic in dentistry that plays an important role in improving facial esthetics, function and stability of good treatment results.Interceptive treatment is orthodontic treatment that is performed in infancy or in the mixed dentition pe-riod to reduce the severity of the developing malocclusion in order to minimize the need for treatment. Interceptive treatment using functional appliance that produce orthopedic, dentoalveolar, andmusculoskeletal changes. Functional appliance, both fixed and removable types, can be used for skeletal correction in growing children. This literature reviewarticle is determined the need for malocclusion treatment and the pattern of needs in early childhood. The high need for interceptive orthodontic treatment may be caused by other factors, such as age, gender, level of parental knowledge, and socio-economic factors. It is concluded that class II malocclusion is the most dominant case in early children, which bad habit is one of the factors causing malocclusion. The need for malocclusion treatment at an early age is veryimportant so that the interceptive treatment pattern is needed by using functional appliance to prevent malocclusion become more severe.

Abstract

Green algae as one of the marine natural resources which is included in the main seaweed is found in many coastal areas of In-donesia. The bioactive component that acts as an antibacterial agent in green algae type Ulva lactuca is ulvan polysaccharide extract. Ulvan is a cell wall polysaccharide that accounts for 9-36% dry weight of Ulva biomass and is mainly composed of rhamnose sulfate, uronic acid (glucuronic acid and iduronic acid) and xylose. Polysaccharide ulvan extracted from Ulva lactuca can be one of the antimicrobial materials used in mouthwash in dentistry.

Abstract

The fiber that is most often used in dentistry is E-glass fiber, but in Indonesia E-glass fiber dental is limited by quantity and relatively expensive. E-glass fiber non dental was chosen as an alternative because the composition is almost the same as E-glass fiber dental and commonly used in the engineering world as a booster in the manufacture of gypsum panels, sculptures and automotive components. This study is aimed to determine the color stability difference between fiber reinforced composite (FRC) E-glass fiber dental and E-glass fiber non dental. This quantitative research is an experimental laboratory with a one group pretest and posttest research design. The sample is circular in shape with diameter 13 mm and height 2 mm consisted of E-glass fiber dental group and the E- glass fiber non dental group consisting of 4 samples for each group and given silane. After the color test using Spectrophotometer UV-Vis where the absorbance and wavelength values obtained will be calculated for the area so that the L*a*b* value and analysed using independent sample t-test, it was stated that there was no significant difference between the color of the fiber reinforced composite E-glass fiber dental and the E-glass fiber non dental. It is concluded that the use of E-glass fiber non dental can be used as a clinical standard because it has a good color stability value similar to that of E-glass fiber dental.
