Abstract

Herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1) and cytomegalovirus (CMV) are members of the human herpes viridae (HHV) family that can infect and give oral manifestations. This case report aims to discuss the oral manifestations of HSV-1 and CMV infection in a child with cerebral abscess. A 7-year-old boy was referred from the Department of Pediatrics to the Department of Oral Medi-cine with complaints of sore mouth sores, especially when eating, three days ago.Extraoral examination revealed that the lips were dry and peeling. Intraoral examination on the dorsum and lateral of the tongue, buccal mucosa and labialmucosa there is white plaque spread, can be scraped and leave an area of erythema. Many ulcers were found, shallow oval in shape, yellowish white in color, surrounded by a diffuse reddish border, varying in size 0.1-0.5 cm in the oropharynx, tonsils, and other oral mu-cosa. The blood laboratory examinations showed a decrease in the value of leukocytes, albumin, creatinine, and sodium, while the monocyte and SGOT values were high, with anti-HSV-1 IgG and reactive anti-CMV IgG. The established diagnosis was acute pseudomembranous oral candidiasis with intraoral HSV-1 and CMV infection. The treatment given is cleaning the entire surface of the oral cavity by gargling with 1% povidone iodine mouthwash 2 times a day, an hour break followed by administration of 1 mL oralsuspension of nystatin 4 times a day, and applying a thin layer of vaseline to the lips 2 times a day. The oral lesions healed on day-10. It was concluded that the oral manifestations can occur in patients with HSV-1 and CMV virus infections.

Abstract

The modern concept of pediatric dentistry today is based on minimally invasive dentistry. Light amplification by the stimulated emission of radiation or Laser is one of the newest technologies available and is used for dental and oral care. This technology causes patient compliance with treatment to be maximized because the discomfort caused is very minimal. Lasers are an exci-ting technology and make pediatric dental care more optimal without causing many of the fear factors found in conventional dental care. This protocol has been developed long ago so that laser treatment can continue to evolve and is a safe and effective part of treatment. Although it has some disadvantages regarding cost and training, its use in pediatric dental procedures is well received by patients and their parents. Because of this, the use of lasers, especially in pediatric dentistry, is increasingly import-ant and needs to be developed. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) states that the use of laser as an alterna-tive method in the treatment of hard and soft tissues in the oral cavity for infants, children, adolescents, and patients with special health care needs, but dentists need additional training to apply it to pediatric dental care.

Abstract

The micro-organism that affects periodontitis is Fusobacterium nucleatum. To inhibit the growth of these micro-organisms, al-ternative herbal medicines are used, such as red betel leaf extract (Piper crocatum Ruiz & Pav) because it contains tannins, fla-vonoids, and saponins which have antibacterial and anti-inflammatoryproperties. This study was conducted to determine the an-tibacterial potential of RBL against the bacteria F.nucleatum ATCC 25586 using the agar diffusion method (Kirby-Bauer) with chlorhexidine as a positive control, aquadest as a negative control, RBL ethanol extract with concentrations of 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, and 30%. Replication 3 times, so the total samples are 21 plates. Data were analyzed by one-way Anova using SPSS v.21. The ethanol extract of RBL appeared to have weak inhibition at concentrations of 10% and 15% and strong inhibition at con-centrations of 20%, 25%, and 30% against F.nucleatum ATCC25586. It was concluded that there was a strong antibacterial po-tential of RBL extract against F.nucleatum ATCC 25586 at a concentration of 30%.

Abstract

One of the riches of the earth that can be found in the sea is brown macroalgae (seaweed). Brown macroalgae has various pro-perties such as having antibacterial and antifungal properties. One type of macroalgae that is commonly found in Indonesia is Turbinaria conoides. T.conoides has been studied for its many benefits, including relieving fever in children, insect repellent, fertilizer, and also as an antifungal and antibacterial agent. The components found in the extract of T.conoides were investiga-ted to be able to inhibit C.albicans and also have antibacterial properties. Because it has antibacterial and antifungal properties,T. conoides has the potential to be used as the main ingredient for making denture cleansers that are safe, inexpensive, and bio-compatible.

Abstract

Staphylococcus aureus is bacteria identified in the root canal of infected teeth by 20%, resistant and isolated from secondary root canal treatment. NaOCl 2.5%has toxic properties and causes irritation when pushed into periapical tissue. Green okra fruit (GOF) extract has antibacterial secondary metabolite compound i.e.flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, tannins and terpenoids. This research was carried out to determine inhibition of GOF extract against S.aureus. Inhibition test useddisc diffution method which consisted of 5 research groups, i.e. GOF with concentration of 1.563%, 3.125%, 6.25%, and 12.5%, and 2.5% NaOCl; the ave-rage diameter of the inhibition zone of the concentration of GOF extract were 0 mm, 0 mm, 14.51 mm, 17.95 mm, and 24.56 mm, respectively. It was concluded that GOF extract has inhibition against of S.aureus starting from concentration of 6.25%. Green okra fruit extract has inhibition close to NaOCl 2.5% against S.aureus at concentration of 12.5%.

Abstract

Eruption gingivitis is an inflammation that occurs when the teeth erupt which is often associated with difficulty in tooth eruption and will subside after the teeth emerge in the oral cavity. The purpose of this study was to determine the process of gingivitis du-ring tooth eruption in children. The inflammatory process ofgingiva will show a change in the color of the gingiva such as be-coming red, swelling of the gingiva, and a distinctive surface texture. Eruption gingivitisassociated with the eruption of primary and permanent teeth, the accumulation of plaque, material alba and calculus due to poor oral hygiene, and the gingivalmargin did not receive adequate protection due to the contour of the crown during the early phase of eruption or active growth. The most effective way toprevent gingivitis is by controlling plaque regularly such as brushing teeth twice a day, using dental floss, using toothpaste that contains anti-plaque, maintaining oral health and visiting the dentist at least every 6 months.

Abstract

Osteomyelitis is a diffuse inflammation that affects the periosteum, cortical bone, and cancellous bone components. The inside of the bone that has been infected will become soft and experience swelling which causes the tissue to press against the outer wall of the bone and the blood vessels in the marrow whichcauses blood flow and oxygen supply to the bone decrease drastically. Usually surgical therapy is needed to treat osteomyelitis, but if the patient's physical condition does not allow it, hyperbaric oxy-gen therapy can be done to increase the supply of oxygen to the hypoxic bones. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is an adjunctto conven-tional antibiotic or surgical treatment of resistant osteomyelitis, using large, multiposition or monoposition pressure tubes for one patient. The patients are given 100% oxygen with a pressure dose of 2-2.4 Atm for 90-120 minutes per day; five or six times per week for 8 weeks or more. Overall usage ranges from 80 to over 130 hours.
