Abstract

The lingual frenulum connects the tongue to the floor of the mouth. When its role is disrupted, it causes many problems, one of which is the limitation in pronouncing some letters or can be called a lisp. This study aims to identify the difference and effect of lingual frenulum size length between people with lisp and normal individuals using the Quick Tongue Tie assessment (QTT). The measurement results and scale were read to the nearest millimetre and then graded into classes 1-4 according to Kotlow, showing a significant difference and influence in the length of the lingual frenulum between the two groups i.e. 87.5% of the 40 lisp individu-als had a size less than 16 mm and 12.5% more than 16 mm. In normal individuals the size of lingual frenulum was 100% more than 16 mm. The difference in lingual frenulum size can be used as an alternative assessment in forensic identification. It is conclu-ded that the length of the frenulum lingualis influences the incidence of lisp. The severity of ankyloglossia or tongue-tie occurs in males compared to females, so males have a shorter frenulum lingualis size than females. Age did not affect the incidence of lisp or ankyloglossia.

Abstract

Disclosing solution is a dye that can change the colour of dental plaque to contrast with the colour of the tooth surface. Dental plaque has the ability to retain dyes due to the difference in polarity between plaque components and dyes. This review discusses alternative DS materials from natural materials. Using literature review, the researchers found 108 articles that matched the key-words, then screened based on duplication, title, and abstract. Eleven articles that met the inclusion criteria and theme. Nine of the 11 selected studies stated that these natural ingredients have potential in identification. It was concluded that many natural in-gredients are effective as alternatives to DS, including beetroot, mulberry juice, red dragon fruit, purple sweet potato, ethanol extract of inai leaves, combination of beetroot extract and VCO, rosella petal extract, senduduk fruit and red dragon fruit peel.

Abstract

Oral health is important in today's modern world, as it allows individuals to eat, speak and socialise comfortably. But sometimes this condition is difficult to achieve, because the incidence of caries is still quite high. Dental caries is an infectious disease of the hard tissues of the teeth, namely enamel, dentin and cementum. If dental caries is not treated, it can continue to the supporting tissues of the teeth. Dental restoration materials help to reconstruct and repair dental hard tissues. To improve the physical pro-perties and reduce the water sensitivity of conventional materials, resin-modified glass ionomer cements (RMGIC) were deve-loped, which are restoration materials that combine the properties of conventional glass ionomer cements with composite resins. Several studies have shown that the amount of fluorine ions released by hybrid ionomers in RMGIC is greater than other res-toration materials such as composite resins and composites, making RMGIC an option.

Abstract

Mastication and aesthetic disturbances are often experienced by patients with multiple anterior and posterior tooth losses. In the case of patients with few remaining natural teeth, a telescopic overdenture may be a potential option. This will improve the stability and retention of the prosthesis. This article reports the management of a patient with partial edentulous with severe mas-ticatory and aesthetic impairment using a telescopic overdenture prosthesis to improve chewing quality and aesthetics. A 70-year-old woman came to the Prosthodontics Clinic with complaints of difficulty chewing and lack of confidence due to the loss of most of the teeth in the upper jaw and lower jaw and the upper front teeth were slightly loose. The patient wanted to have a denture made so that she could chew food well and improve her smile. After a thorough examination, the patient was treated with an overdenture and four telescopic crowns were placed on the anterior abutment teeth. It was concluded that the use of telescopic overdenture in patients with edentulus parsialis can improve aesthetics and masticatory quality.

Abstract

Knife-edge ridge is a form of alveolar ridge caused by frequent lateral resorption, which affects the ridge edentulus, particularly the posterior region of the lower jaw. Treatment options for knife edge ridge generally include surgical and non-surgical approaches. The non-surgical approach involves fabricating a conventional removable denture using various materials and modified impres-sion techniques. This case report describes the complete denture management of mandibular knife edge ridge using special im-pression techniques. A 59-year-old male came to Unhas Dental Hospital with complaints of difficulty chewing food due to the loss of all his teeth. Intraoral examination found a knife edge ridge on the posterior region of the lower jaw. The patient was made CD with selective pressure and open window impression techniques and tooth preparation with the concept of lingualised occlusion. It was concluded that management of knife edge ridge at lower jaw using special impression technique and lingualised occlu-sion scheme can improve the retention and stability of CD.

Abstract

A problem in complete denture (CD) treatment is the patient's ability to use and adapt to the denture. If not resolved properly, the denture is considered unsatisfactory by the patient and has an impact on oral health and quality of life. This study provides a des-cription of the quality of life of CD users with flabby ridge on the level of patient satisfaction with speech function, chewing, appear-ance, and comfort using a denture. Analytical observational research with a cross-sectional design was conducted using the me-thod of direct examination and interview using a questionnaire. Based on age group, there is a significant relationship (p<0.05) between the age group of 51-60 years and the age group of 61-70 years with patient satisfaction in the mastication dimension and the overall OHIP-14 dimension obtained a mean value of 16.82 with SD 0.75. It was concluded that the quality of life of CD users with flabby ridge was good; overall the study subjects were satisfied with their dentures

Abstract

Canine tooth impaction plays an important role in smile aesthetics and functional occlusion, and can cause dental and skeletal malocclusion. Treatment planning for canine tooth impaction cases is complex and is influenced by various factors, including the inclination, angle, position, depth of impaction, as well as the surrounding bone density. For a more precise evaluation, imaging is the recommended tool, which includes 2D radiographs, as well as 3D imaging using. This literature review presents current information on the assessment of canine tooth impaction by considering appropriate diagnostic imaging options to support more adequate treatment planning with consideration of radiation dose. It is concluded that although conventional radiographic modalities are able to provide accurate diagnosis regarding the morphology of the apex, apex location, and inclination of canine tooth impaction, cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) offers a higher degree of accuracy in determining other parameters associated with canine tooth impaction. Therefore, the use of CBCT may be the preferred option for a more comprehensive and accurate evaluation of canine tooth impaction cases.

Abstract

One of the signs of periodontitis is the occurrence of infrabony defects. Chitosan is a natural-based polymer hydrogel that has bio-degradability, biocompatibility, bacteriostatic, non-toxic properties and has haemostatic and mucoadhesive capacities that are very beneficial in the periodontal regenerative process in periodontitis patients with infrabony defects. This systematic review dis-cusses the effectiveness of local application of chitosan hydrogels as periodontal regenerative therapy through PubMed and Google Scholar online literature databases limited to human randomised control clinical studies, published in the last eight years, on periodontal probing depth (PPD) and clinical attachment level (CAL). The initial search yielded 385 abstracts, 4 studies met the inclusion criteria that addressed the effectiveness of chitosan-based natural hydrogels on periodontal regenerative in periodon-titis patients with infrabony defects using open flap debridement (OFD)+chitosan (Cs), OFD+low molecular chitosan, OFD+high molecular chitosan, OFD+chitosan+fucoidan, OFD+chitosan+bonegraft surgical procedures. All studies showed improved of PPD and CAL within six months post-baseline. It was concluded that all procedures were effective in reducing PPD and increasing CAL. The use of chitosan can be considered an important material for periodontal regenerative therapy in periodontitis patients with infrabony defects.

Abstract

Irrigation is an important stage to support the success of root canal treatment. Some irrigation solutions commonly used in root canal treatment include NaOCl and EDTA. This article describes the use of a combination of 5.25% concentration NaOCl and 17% EDTA irrigation solution in root canal treatment of tooth 21. A 20-year-old female presented for treatment of a broken left upper front tooth. Clinical examination showed positive vitality and percussion tests while the palpation test was negative; there was a picture of thickening of the lamina dura and periodontal ligament on radiographic examination. The patient was diagnosed with asymptomatic irreversible pulpitis with symptomatic apical periodontitis. At the initial stage, cavitary access preparation, working length measurement, preparation using rotary instruments, irrigation with a combination of NaOCl and EDTA were performed, administration of medicament, and root canal filling was performed followed by composite resin restoration. It was concluded that the combination of NaOCl and EDTA irrigation solutions in the root canal treatment of tooth 21 showed good results.
