Abstract

Habit is a pattern of behavior that is repeated; in the oral cavity is also known as oral bad habit and naturally occurs at the age of less than six years. Oral habit cancontinue at the age of more than six years which can cause abnormalities in the dentofacial structure. This article discusses the influence of the habit of breathing through the mouth on the shape of the face in children. With a literature review design, articles were collected using Google Scholar, Pubmed and ScienceDirectusing the keywords oral bad habit, mouth breathing, malocclusion. The selected articles are publications in 2015-2022, research subjects are children aged 6-12years, full-text available, and written in English and Indonesian. It was concluded that oral bad habits often occur in children and even in infants. Oral bad habitsinclude thumb sucking, nail biting, lip sucking, tongue pushing, and mouth breath-ing. Oral bad habits such as mouth breathing have an influence on theoccurrence of malocclusion, especially in children who are still in the growth and development stage, namely elementary school children.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to know issue of the relationship between mandibular asymmetry and body posture. The literatures of mandibular asymmetry and body posture published in the last 10 years (2012-2022) which were collected from the electronic databases PubMed and Google Scholar. The data obtained was anaylized using observational, prospective, retrospective, case reports, systematic reviews and meta-analyses, showed that there is a relationship between themandibular and C2-3 with the rela-tion of the suprahyoid, hyoid bone, infrahyoid and sternocleidomastoid muscles connecting to spine. So, the changes in mandi-bular position will also change the body posture, and body posture will also affect the position of the mandibular with spinal de-formities which results in distortion of the vertebral column and asymmetrical face, shoulders, and waist. It was concluded that all studies cited in this literature review reported thatmandibular asymmetry and body posture have a reciprocal relationship.

Abstract

The choice of implant shape and size is an important part of the treatment plan procedure in order to obtain an implant that is sta-ble in masticatory function and aesthetic function. The use of implants with a tapered design and surface modification would improve the ultimate stability in low density bone. A comprehensiveand accurate radiographic examination is also an import-ant aspect of dental implant treatment planning. This article is aimed to present things about taperedinternal implants starting from indications, shape and dimensions, design, surface characteristics of the implant and drilling guide and selection of the appropriate type and radiographic technique to produce appropriate diagnostic information. So, with the limited facilities of modern radiographic images inIndonesia, conventional radiographic examinations with several projections can be used as an option to obtain optimal diagnostic information according to existing cases. Abstract

After root canal treatment, teeth are at higher risk of fracture than vital teeth; the cause is multifactorial, both iatrogenic and non-iatrogenic. Guava are often usedbecause the leaves have been proven to treat various diseases. Guava leaves contain active ingre-dients, including tannins, flavonoids, essential oils and saponins.Lime is often processed by the community as a fresh drink, such as warm lime juice. Lime fruit has useful ingredients such as essential oils, citric acid, amino acids and saponins. The aim of this study was to analyze differences in fracture resistance after root canal irrigation between 60% GL extract and 100% lime juice. This is a laboratory experiment using extracts of GL, LJ, maxillary central incisor with a post-test only control group design, which was tested statistically by using one-way Anova followed by a post hoc test. Fracture resistance in the 60% GL extract group averaged is 45.07±9.80; while the 100% LJ group is40.86±12.71; the differ is 4,280. It was concluded that there is no significant difference in the degree of fracture resistance between the 60% GL and 100% LJextract groups as root canal irriga-gation materials.

Abstract

One-visit root canal treatment (OV-RCT) aims to preserve damaged teeth by fulfilling the principles of the endodontic triad (cleaning and shaping, sterilizationand root canal obturation) which are completed in OV; the advantage is lower risk of bacterial contamination, shorter time without compromising the quality oftreatment results. This case report discusses OV-RCT of man-dibular right second molar. A 23-year-old woman with a diagnosis of asymptomatic irreversible pulpitis in the mandibular mo-lar, radiographically showed slight widening of the periodontal ligament. One-visit RCT was performed using Protaper Next ro-tary files on the mesiobuccal and mesiolingual roots up to X2 files (#25/06) and X3 files (#30/07) on the distal roots. The root canals were irrigated using 5.25%NaOCl and 17% EDTA. The root canal filling technique was carried out using a single cone technique using an epoxy resin sealer and gutta percha material. The treatment was successfully carried out. It was concluded that OV-RCT of the right lower second molar showed success both clinically and radiographically.

Abstract

Antibiotics and antifungals are needed in the patient's dentures because acrylic resin denture base can be a breeding ground for Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans colonies. Indonesia has biodiversity consisting of thousands of plant species so that it becomes an opportunity for the development ofsecondary metabolites for the healthcare industry. Some natural materials can be used as antibiotics, anti-inflammatory, and antifungal. Antibiotics and antifungalsare needed in the patient's dentures be-cause acrylic resin denture base can be a breeding ground for S.mutans and C.albicans colonies. This literature review explains the utilization and potential of natural materials in prosthodontics. So, it is concluded that various active compounds such as fla-vonoids, alkaloids, saponins, steroids, tannins, essential oils, kabivetol, estrgiol, eugenol metileugenol, carvakrol, phenol, trape-zoid, ascorbic acid and others found in natural materials have antifungal, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties.

Abstract

Dental crowns are artificial teeth that are permanently attached to teeth that have been prepared to repair part or all of the damaged tooth surface and to replace toothloss. Making a crown must consider several factors, including being able to maintain and pro-tect existing teeth and surrounding tissues. This literature review isaimed to describe the effect of crown use on periodontal tis-sue. A total of 20 articles collected from various electronic databases and manual searches wereincluded in this literature. Plaque is a major etiologic factor of gingival inflammation and inadequate crown design can lead to plaque accumulation. Dental crowns can cause inflammation of the periodontal tissues, if cervical endings and preparation margins as well as oral hygiene principles are not observed during the crown fabrication process. It is concluded that crown design plays a very important role in determi-ning the condition of periodontal tissues. Appropriate designand good oral hygiene are important to reduce the occurrence of periodontal disease.

Abstract

Interceptive orthodontic treatment, which is growth modification treatment using removable appliances such as twin block, is effective in treating skeletal retrognathic mandibular abnormalities in growing patients. A 10-year-old female with class II den-toskeletal malocclusion with retrognathic mandibular was treated using a twin block device for 8 months of active period and 4 months of retention period to obtain class I skeletal relationships, class I molar and canine relationships and normal overjet and overbite. Treatment begins with recording the bite by instructing the patient to advance her lower jaw as needed, then ma-king a twin block tool design. Devices with maxillary and mandibular bite blocks are worn for at least 20 hours a day with con-trol intervals every 2 weeks. The treatment results were very good with the patient's skeletal relationship being class I. It was concluded that patients with retrognathic mandibular can be treated by growth modification using the twin block device, with good patient cooperation, this tool effectively stimulates mandibular growth.

Abstract

The most common radiopaque lesion in the jaws is condensing osteitis (CO), which occurs in 4-7% of the general population. The hallmark of CO consists of a solid radiopaque mass adjacent to the apex of the tooth and has well-defined edges and a faint tran-sition to the surrounding bone. This study examined the prevalence of CO on panoramic radiographs at the Radiology Department of Dental Hospital Hasanuddin University in 2023. Descriptive observational study with cross-sectional design through panoramic radiography data in January-December, then the results were entered into distribution tables. The CO was mostly found at the age of 21-30 years as much as 33.0%, with female gender as much as 62.1%, and in the lower jaw as much as 72.8%. It was concluded that the prevalence of CO in the oral cavity was high due to the low level of knowledge and public awareness of oral health maintenance and suboptimal oral health services.
