Abstract

The global climate crisis identifies mangrove ecosystems as strategic yet vulnerable components prone to degradation, particularly in coastal regions like Tangerang. This study examines the effectiveness of integrating mangrove conservation values into the Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model to improve the eco-literacy of Biology Education students. A quantitative quasi-experimental Pretest-Posttest Control Group Design was applied to 28 students, divided into experimental and control groups. Data were collected through ecological literacy tests, environmental attitude scales (New Ecological Paradigm/NEP), and field skill observations, then analyzed using Independent Sample T-tests and Normalized Gain (N-gain) scores. Results indicate a significant impact (p=0.000) of PjBL integrated with mangrove conservation values across all dimensions of eco-literacy. The experimental group achieved high improvement, with N-gain scores: cognitive (0.74), affective (0.83), and psychomotor (0.76), with the affective aspect being dominant. Direct involvement at sites such as Ketapang Urban Aquaculture effectively fostered ecological responsibility. The study concludes that local conservation-based PjBL transforms students into eco-literate agents of change through direct, hands-on experiences.

Abstract

This study analyzes the phylogenetic relationship between the Zingiberaceae and Costaceae families based on partial maturase K (matK) gene sequences and examines their common ancestry. A molecular systematic approach was applied, with DNA sequences aligned using ClustalX 2.1 and edited in BioEdit 7.0.5. Phylogenetic reconstruction was conducted using the maximum parsimony method in PAUP 4.0b10 with heuristic search and 1000 bootstrap replications. The results show a clear separation between Zingiberaceae and Costaceae, with Musa (Musaceae) as the outgroup. Costaceae is identified as the sister family of Zingiberaceae, indicating a shared ancestor. The paraphyletic nature of Costus and taxonomic anomalies likely reflect limited resolution of partial matK data.

Abstract

Infectious diseases caused by pathogenic bacteria remain a health concern, particularly due to increasing antibiotic resistance. Natural products such as karamunting leaves (Rhodomyrtus tomentosa) have potential as alternative antibacterial agents. This review aims to evaluate the antibacterial activity of karamunting leaf extracts against pathogenic bacteria through a literature review. Relevant scientific articles were analyzed. The results show that karamunting leaf extracts inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhi, and Streptococcus mutans, as indicated by the formation of inhibition zones with varying diameters. Differences in antibacterial activity are influenced by extract concentration, bacterial species, testing methods, and secondary metabolite content. These findings indicate that karamunting leaf extracts have potential as natural antibacterial agents.

Abstract

Antimicrobial resistance is a global problem that drives the search for new sources of antimicrobial compounds. One potential source that has been widely studied is endophytic bacteria, which are microorganisms that live within plant tissues without causing disease. This review aims to examine the potential of endophytic bacteria as a source of antimicrobial compounds based on national and international scientific literature. The review was conducted through an analysis of relevant research articles in the field of microbiology. The findings indicate that endophytic bacteria, particularly from the genera Bacillus, Pseudomonas, and Streptomyces, are capable of producing various bioactive secondary metabolites, including alkaloids, antimicrobial peptides, polyketides, and phenolic compounds. These metabolites have demonstrated inhibitory activity against pathogenic microorganisms. The production of antimicrobial metabolites is influenced by host plant species and environmental conditions. Therefore, endophytic bacteria have strong potential to be developed as a source of natural antimicrobials to address antibiotic resistance, although further studies are required to evaluate production optimization and safety.

Abstract

Antibiotic resistance is an increasing health problem that poses a serious challenge to the treatment of infectious diseases, particularly in tropical regions such as Indonesia. Resistant pathogenic bacteria reduce the effectiveness of antibiotic therapy and increase the risk of treatment failure. This article aims to review the mechanisms of antibiotic resistance in pathogenic bacteria using a literature review approach. Relevant national and international scientific articles were analyzed. The results indicate that antibiotic resistance can be classified into intrinsic and acquired resistance, with major mechanisms including antibiotic inactivation, modification of antibiotic targets, decreased membrane permeability, and efflux pump activity. Common pathogenic bacteria associated with antibiotic resistance include Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. In conclusion, understanding antibiotic resistance mechanisms is essential for developing effective control strategies and promoting rational antibiotic use.

Abstract

Infectious diseases caused by pathogenic microorganisms remain a global health problem, especially with the increasing cases of antimicrobial resistance to antibiotics. This condition has prompted efforts to search for alternative antimicrobial agents derived from natural sources. Sungkai (Peronema canescens Jack.) is one of Indonesia's medicinal plants that has traditionally been used in the treatment of infectious diseases. This article aims to systematically review the results of research related to the antimicrobial activity of sungkai leaves based on published studies. The method used in writing this article is a literature study of national and international scientific articles published between 2015 and 2025 through Google Scholar and PubMed. The results of the study show that sungkai leaf extract has antibacterial and antifungal activity against various pathogenic microorganisms, with varying levels of effectiveness based on the type of test microbe, testing method, and concentration of extract used. Antimicrobial activity is formed due to secondary metabolites, such as flavonoids, tannins, phenolic compounds, and terpenoids. Based on these findings, sungkai leaves have the potential to be developed as a natural antimicrobial agent, although further research is needed to support its safety and clinical application.

Abstract

This study was conducted to comprehensively analyze household waste management and the effectiveness of TPS-3R in Gorontalo City. This analysis identifies the level of effectiveness of TPS-3R and the basis for formulating recommendations for sustainable waste management policies in the Gorontalo City area. This study was conducted on a sample population of 8 villages and 8 waste generation locations spread across the 8 villages and 4 TPS 3R located in 8 villages. Furthermore, this study uses Purposive sampling in determining the location based on the condition of waste generation, and data collection using the Checklist Form of waste generation and the condition of TPS 3R then interviews with the village government with the Guttman analysis approach for quantitative data for the Checklist Form and interview analysis using the Miles and Huberman approach for qualitative data analysis. The problem of waste generation and household waste management in Gorontalo City is still not optimal, where community involvement in preventing waste generation is not yet effective, facilities and infrastructure such as TPS-3R are not optimal in reducing waste generation due to several obstacles such as unclear management and institutions and the active role of the village government is not yet too strong due to the existence of waste management regulations from the region directly by the Environmental Service so that there needs to be clear coordination and collaboration in terms of law and regulations in the future.
