Abstract

Community-based tourism management precariously depends on a robust community, especially in tourist villages. Establishing an organizational framework characterized by effective coordination and well-defined member relationships strengthens the community and defines each individual's role and responsibility. To enhance the efficiency of the established structure, this study aims to investigate the function of the arts and cultural community within Pancoh Ecotourism Village and ascertain its capacity for further development as a Cultural Village. This study utilises a community development framework (Community Development Foundation, 2011) comprising six principles—common goals, cooperation, strengths and independence, equity and inclusiveness, participation, and community empowerment. Community representatives, village officials, tourism actors, and workers of Pancoh Ecotourism Village participated in a series of focus group discussions (FGD). Consequently, the inhabitants of Pancoh Ecotourism Village successfully established an organisational framework that catered to their requirements and unambiguously delineated every individual's specific duties and obligations. In addition, actors, tourism managers, and arts and culture community members can solicit diverse opportunities and curate cultural tour packages that feature renowned artistic and cultural attractions and products.

This study seeks to comprehend how the tourism community in Rejowinangun Tourism Village reacted to the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the issues mentioned above. Conducting this research is crucial to identifying the determinants of tourism resilience in tourist villages amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. This study employs a qualitative descriptive methodology. The data collection procedure comprised a literature review, semi-structured interviews, and field observations. The tourism industry reacted to the COVID-19 pandemic by implementing human resource capacity-building initiatives, demonstrating adherence to health protocols, and implementing digitization innovations. Abstract

A prevalent challenge encountered by small islands pertains to accessibility. Nevertheless, numerous ostensibly isolated islands attract a substantial number of tourists. This article examines the relationship between accessibility and tourism development on small islands to understand the two better. Qualitative data collection methods were utilized for this study, including in-depth interviews, the collection of pertinent secondary data, and field observations. Following analysis, the collected data were presented in a comparative descriptive fashion. A discussion of the island approach (islands and archipelagos) is undertaken to comprehend the interconnections between minor islands and other locations within the larger region. Field research indicates that despite possessing the aesthetic appeal of beaches and sea, many small islands still need to exploit their tourism potential fully. This is primarily due to the exorbitant transportation expenses for domestic visitors and the need for adequate tourism infrastructure, including resorts and hotels of international caliber catering to affluent-class tourists (middle and above). Conversely, despite being classified as remote islands, the Riau Archipelago maintains strong diplomatic relations with neighboring nations. It can attract international visitors for cultural tourism, beach activities, and scuba diving. Small islands may benefit from a strategy targeting affluent classes and foreign tourists. In order to develop the tourist experience on small islands by expectations, it is necessary to enhance tourism infrastructure and services for tourists and tourism investors as a result of targeting the tourist segment.

Abstract

Srikeminut Tourist Village is among the tourist communities adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Pokdarwis is among the entities tasked with managing the tourism industry during the pandemic. By applying the theory of tourism disaster crisis management offered by Ritchie (2004), this research endeavors to ascertain the approach adopted by the Pokdarwis of Srikeminut Tourism Village in handling the tourism industry amidst the Covid-19 pandemic crisis that transpired between 2020 and 2022. Therefore, this research focuses on two primary topics: firstly, the categorization of the Pokdarwis strategy about the stages of crisis management, and secondly, the identification of the Pokdarwis strategy in the recovery of the tourism sector. The findings indicated that Pokdarwis resorted to a sequence of strategic implementations in light of the pandemic rather than engaging in preventative measures and strategic planning. Implementing health protocols, creating virtual events, limiting the number of visits, collaborating with internal and external parties, suspending several tourist activities, and promoting tourist attractions via Instagram are all methods to achieve this objective. Pokdarwis' approach to tourism sector management has facilitated the gradual recovery of Srikeminut Tourist Village from the pandemic crisis. By 2022, it will be possible to classify the Srikeminut Tourist Village as having reached a stage in its crisis anatomy known as the long term (recovery), wherein all forms of tourism activities can be resumed as before, and the village community will have acclimated to the new normalcy. To attain this position, Pokdarwis engaged in a succession of partnerships with internal and external entities, implemented a crisis communication strategy, and provided tourism managers and Pokdarwis personnel with a variety of training on sector management.

Abstract

Camping has recently gained popularity among tourists. However, research on camping in the Indonesian tourism setting needs to be more extensive, particularly experiential. Sermo Reservoir is a popular camping destination in Kulon Progo Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta. This study aims to assess tourists’ camping experiences at Sermo Reservoir using Kim et al.’s (2012) Memorable Tourism Experience (MTE) scale. The study included 106 participants recruited through direct surveys of campers who had spent at least one night at Sermo Reservoir in June 2023. A reliability test was performed to determine the internal consistency of the translated scale across all samples. Descriptive quantitative analysis was also performed to determine the level of agreement among Sermo Reservoir camping tourists on each item and dimension of the MTE. The findings revealed that Sermo Reservoir camping tourists agreed on all MTE dimensions at a high to very high level. The characteristics of hedonism and refreshment received a “very high” level of agreement, followed by local culture, novelty, participation, meaningfulness, and knowledge in the “high” agreement category. The study limitations include the adaptation of the scale, which needs to be addressed and investigated further in the local context, and the inclusion of limited acceptance response alternatives. Additional limitations include the short research time, sample procedures, and data collecting, which prevent it from representing MTE in a larger population context.
